Zack's POV
"Penny?"
Huh…
I have in my thought that we would likely miss Penny but how did she's down in Mantle being a hero and all but… I don't know if it is just coincidence that she's here now or if other circumstances are in effect that made this possible. Well, at least I get to see her for the first time she looks exactly as she did in the show.
Additionally, I wasn't the one calling her out. That was from my second girlfriend who, I can't blame her, looks as if she's seen a ghost. Still the shock from everyone did not last long before Penny dramatically gasps upon seeing her best friend and thankfully, chose to jump at her instead of her canon self did by crashing into Ruby. "Salutations! Friend Ruby! It is such a pleasure to see you all again!"
She announces with such lively energy, I found myself glancing at Ironwood who had the gall to sheepishly shrug at me. Yet despite that, I return my attention as I witness Penny giving one hell of a death hug to my girlfriend who was visibly gasping for breath before dropping her. Moreover, it was clear that Ruby was on the brink of tears seeing a friend once thought lost again.
"Penny, I… I-I thought you… died…"
"She did. However, we were able to recover her core from Amity Arena once it had made its way back to Atlas. It took some time but now…" Ironwood spoke before Penny chimes in again.
"I'm as good as new! Better, even! And now I'm the official protector of the Mantle!" She announces with flair. I ended up tuning off for a bit to address Ozma who I hear in my mind.
"You knew that this was bound to happen, did you?"
There was no accusation in his voice before I simply nod with a smile seeing Penny's interaction with my second girlfriend. "Yup. I knew from the start that this was going to happen. Though I was partially concerned that we're going to miss her completely since she's in Mantle. That and the whole going out of canon since we came here legally instead of through a stolen ship. And if memory serves me… they landed it in Mantle. Part of the reason they came across both Penny and her creator, Pietro. Who is also the same guy who made Yang her arm."
"I see… And why did you not tell the others about Miss Polendina's survival?"
"And ruin the heartwarming surprise for everyone? Perish the thought." I answer back while holding back an amuse huff. "But I must admit, I did not account for her sudden appearance here." Seriously… I wonder why is she doing here? Wasn't it around this time she's dealing with the sabres breaching into Mantle through a gap in the wall? Another point I need to grill James on. The next second I see Weiss walking to my side with a knowing look before whispering.
"You knew this was going to happen?"
"Eventually." I only a single word while admiring the scene before me.
"I dearly hope you will update us all on the events that transpired in Atlas. I prefer no surprises while we're here." Yeah, I get that Weiss. There are still Watts to deal with and other factors like dealing with that bastard of a father trying to get elected. And keeping Ironwood's head straight. Ozma's presence surely boosted his sanity and I intend to keep him sane and hopefully… never use his semblance.
I have my doubts that I could even reach him if Mettle is active…
"Fully intend on a debrief if there's the time." I admit before I bring my eyes back to Penny admiring the necklace on Ruby's neck.'
"Friend Ruby, this necklace on your neck, it's beautiful. Where did you get that?" Oh. This will be interesting. I end up raising an eyebrow as Ruby's face turns a shade red as did the giggles from everyone. Though it appears that Penny misinterprets my girlfriend's reaction before she eyes in on her worriedly.
"Are you alright friend Ruby? Your body temperatures spike!"
"I- I uh…" Poor Ruby. I think it just strikes her that she needs to explain that I exist and how I'm her boyfriend… "I got it as a birthday gift from him…" She raises a finger at my direction. But before Penny could acknowledge my presence, she suddenly gasps and with a bit of drama in it, she points straight at the necklace. Which then again is indeed an amulet of protection we found from an ancient Arakan city months back somewhere in Anima near Mistral.
And I gave it to Ruby to protect her from harm.
"Ruby… I'm detecting an unidentified energy source within it!"
Wait, what.
HUH?!
Penny can detect magic?! Since when can she do that? Or is it only the sister's magic she can detect?! Well, things got WAY more intriguing now! And sharing my reaction, everyone in the room gasps out. Except Nerium whose eyes are now deeply focused on Penny. More than that, I can see from the corner of my eye that James is now invested in the conversation by the way he's glancing at me and Ruby's necklace.
Come to think about it. I still haven't fulfilled my promise of getting Weiss one too.
Hm. I should find a way to fulfil that.
"Wait hold up you can detect it?" Yang asks as she steps forward before Penny swiftly acknowledges her while my ears twitch.
"Yes I can friend Yang! There is an anonymous-condensed energy that seems to be contained within the ruby crystal core of the necklace. I can only conclude that jewel serves as a vessel or a battery of sorts. For what purpose I do not know. Oh, Father would love to have a look at it!" Penny announces with utter glee before she notices everyone looking my way. Wow. Thanks, guys, for lending her curiosity on me. No matter, it is inevitable that we will meet eventually.
"Greeting Penny Polendina it is a pleasure to meet one of Ruby's best friends." I chuckle, and I see my second girlfriend's cheeks turn a shade darker. Though what concerns me greatly is the look, I'm getting from Penny. Her eyes seem to be jumping all over me and even onto Oathkeeper.
This is concerning.
"What are you?" She asks before realising how off-putting it sounds. "Wait! I mean it honestly! I'm detecting the same unidentified energy signature all over your body with a higher concentration on the strange tattoo markings of a fox on your right arm! It's even in your weapon alongside an unidentified Dust variant! You do not match anything I know, and your features are fascinating! I'm sorry if I sound rude."
Ah… So she can detect that I am not normal.
"Well… I'm a special case. I am technically a Fox Faunus, but with time I will be a Kitsune Faunus." I hum before waving off my hand. There's a time and place for this. "Moving on, I am Zack Arakan. A pleasure to meet you Penny Polendina, and you've joined us in the middle of a rather important conversation." I say with my hand out before Penny takes my hand into her and- holy!
Just how fast are you shaking my hand, Penny! Please cut it down, or I think you'll rip them off! "Salutations Zack Arakan! It is a pleasure to meet you! I hope we can learn more from each other!" She says as I can see her eyes darting all over my physical features, especially my ears and tails. Yeah, good to officially meet you too but watch my hand!
She eventually stops as I begin shaking my hand for a bit so I can get the feeling back into it after Penny made it numb. Then two of my tails reaches forward and sandwich my arm before massaging my poor left hand. I hope she didn't damage it. I'm a left-hander after all. Something I'm surprised I had in common back on Earth and here.
Yes, I am aware I do most things with my right hand but I still write left-handed.
"Now ignoring the numb feeling of my hand, we were in the middle of an essential discussion. We can talk more of my status later." I say before we all return our looks to Ironwood while Penny scoots over to his side. "Now, as I said before, while I am Ozma's host, I have a bigger role than I look."
"You mean overblowing your titles and proclaiming yourself Savour of Argus?" Celeste giggles while I just roll my eyes among the cheerful mood everyone is in so far.
"Yes." I bluntly admit before holding up my still numb left after pulling my tails back and straightaway, a ball of purple magic matching my aura condenses out from my fingertips and above my hand. "While I planned to into further detail on this in this conversation, what Penny had helpfully identified earlier is no ordinary energy signature. This is magic. It is similar to the power the Maidens use but different. Because this comes from the Sisters of Twilight. The true Gods of Remnant."
…
"Do you intend to clarify us more on this?" Winter ask me as I nod while I can see that both Penny and James were enthralled with what I am saying. With the former more obvious than the latter. And thus, I explain the real history of my world. The Arakan Bloodline. The true history of my people, the fact that the Arakans as a whole are a dying blood tied to the Sisters.
And I am their champion.
After what was a long talk which my friends and girlfriends join in occasionally so I won't be the only one doing all the talking, I eventually bring on to the one I dread the most. My eventual death. "Now you know what I know. Well, most of them because…" I let out a shaky sigh. Even till now its horrible to think on.
"It involves your friend Ozma. When his soul found his way into mine, we did not know that the Brother God his a contingency plan within his soul. Should anyone possess the magical gifts of the Sisters, upon our merger. It will activate and instantly kill me before the cycle repeats all over again. So, as far as we could guess, we probably have two years or less before I die."
The office was dead silent at my reveal. If the revelation that the Sisters of Twilight are the true gods and the Brothers are pretenders. The reveal that Faunus were just a subspecies of humans. That Dust was the crystallised manifestation of AWOR's blood. Or the reveal that the Arakan Clan still exists didn't stun them.
This surely would.
"That's horrible." Penny murmurs and she sounds utterly heartbroken. "Its unfair. How could they do this to the both of you?"
"Because I am the key to give the Sisters the chance to take back what's theirs. To the Brothers, my very existence as the Sister's champion makes me a threat to them. They are ruthless thieves. Taking what does not belong to them and burying the truth with lies under everyone's noses. " I spat with bitterness. I may have let my emotions and biasness after my description of those two fuckers but screw it.
"I am but a pawn in this divine war beneath our war with Salem. They made it personal when they marked me for death when my only sin is being born in this reality and carrying my ancestors blood." Then, I felt someone holding on to my hand from behind.
"Zack, you're not alone with this. And remember, we'll all here by your side. Weiss and I are here for you." Ruby… I have a reputation to uphold as Ozma's incarnate. I don't intend to cry right now.
…
"This is a lot to take in." Ironwood mutters while rubbing his forehead before looking at Nerium. "So, she's part of your clan?"
"Correct. And in additional news you need to know, the Arakan Clan will be here eventually."
"And how would they do that? They will have to come to Solitas by air or sea would they?" Winter then ask as I couldn't help myself but give a smirk.
"Well. Beneath the world as we know it lies many ancient Arakan cities all interconnected by continent spanning tunnels. As we speak, the Khan, or I suppose my blood uncle Fenrir, has ordered the tunnels connecting Sanctuary and Solitas to be refurbished after centuries of neglect. Since all these tunnels go to every continent, I can get my uncle to have the other tunnels repaired and that will allow us to send information to the other kingdoms and by extension, our colleagues without the CCTs." I explain before taking a breather.
"Of course once your project is done, things will change."
I can see the General's eyes and Winter's widening in shock while Penny's is just a ball of enthusiasm about what she heard. "But I must offer a word of caution. Many of Sanctuary's people bear… historical grievances over Atlas treatment of Faunuses. Cultural differences might cause internal conflict as Nerium had shown in her way even if she means no harm. As such, some volunteers who might show up may not react fondly to Atlas as will the opposite and something that we'll address when it comes."
"Though…" I felt a yawn coming as my eyes look out the window to see the sun high in the sky. Man I've been talking for hours while answering their questions at the same time. "It appears we could use a recess period. We can resume our talk at a later date."
"Indeed. Katharine and I must make our departure, my parents no doubt will wish to see me again. Iris says behind me. Right… Her parents. It has been years since I have last seen them before all three moved to Atlas. I wonder how they are doing right now and seeing how Celeste's now an Heiress in her family's company. I'd say quite well. "Don't fret, I am sure we will see each other again in the coming days."
"Fair well then. I assume you have our scroll numbers?" I ask before I got a nod and bow from her.
"Indeed. I can take care of myself here with Katharine by my side. Once I am available again, I'll let you all know of this." With final goodbyes, we watch as my childhood friend and her caretaker depart. That was quickly followed by Maria who grumbled/ask for a lift to finally go and see Pietro for her prosthetic checks. Penny obliged, but I ask for her to remain here so she can spend more time with Ruby.
"James. Before I forget and leave for a recess or lunch, I need to tell you something." I say as I glance at Neo who knows what's coming. Though I can't stop the worry in my chest. This can go so wrong if he is not willing to hear me out…
"What is it, Zack?" He asks me with his voice lace with curiosity. Glancing back at Neo, I signalled her with my head and just like that she slowly walks up to my side while the rest of my friends know what's about to happen and chose to let me handle it.
Unless it gets bad, then I'm sure they will intervene.
"You see… when we were back in Mistral… I had some help, and before you lose your shit because I know you will." I held a finger up while Winter frowns at my language and Penny gasps at my choice of words. I then glance at Neo and gave her the nod. And just like that, Neo reveals herself and well… Ironwood, Winter and Penny's eyes shot wide open.
And.
"You!"
Crap..
Just like that Ironwood pulled a pistol out from somewhere, Winter drew her sword and I know for sure that if I don't stop it, things are about to explode! The only good thing is that Penny did not draw any weapons yet!
"James! Specialist Schnee stand down both of you!" I yell out before standing between them and Neo with my hand out.
==================================================================
The silence within the room was deafening with everyone on edge. Yet, it did not stop the intense looks Ironwood and Winter were shooting at Zack standing in their way. All the while, Neo had a look that screams I told you this will happen. "Ozma, have your next incarnate move." The general says tersely while tightening his grip on his pistol. "Do you have any idea who you are protecting?"
"I do. But listen to me, I beg of you." The fox Faunus says before Qrow steps in.
"Trust me Jimmy, I did not like the idea of her tagging alongside us when she joined us, but midget here has been helping all of us out for some time now." The veteran Huntsman explains as Neo shot him a dirty look. "I get why you don't trust her. We all didn't at first, so put the gun down before things get excessively messy."
"You can't be serious Branwen!" Winter sputters. "She is known associate of Roman Torchwick. She played a role in the attack and Fall of Beacon and has an outstanding warrant in multiple kingdoms. And you brought her into Atlas Academy willingly." She accused before Weiss intervenes.
"Winter. Please. I understand why you're doing this but let's lower our weapons, and we will explain why she is here and with us." And for a moment, Weiss's sister hesitates despite having her weapon fully drawn and pointing at Neo behind Zack.
"Yeah! Neo's been with us for some time now. She even helped and fought alongside all of us. Not just in Mistral but even in Argus! She saved lives. Please General, just hear us out…" Ruby too joins in, and it seems to be having an effect. Ironwood started to show hesitance on his face. However, he remains unconvinced and refuses to put his gun down.
"Oz. Do you trust her?" Ironwood ask and just for a moment, Ozma took control of Zack's body and answers him.
"At first I had my hesitations of her joining us. But Miss Neopolitan has been compliant in assisting our campaign to stop Salem. Even if it is for personal reasons." He explains while James raises an eyebrow.
"Really now?"
Then as a response, Neo simply used her Semblance to become Cinder, draws a finger on her neck and then turns back to herself while out of sight from the fox Faunus. "Was it because of which you somehow bring her into your cause?" Ironwood abruptly questions. Though it certainly caught him and Winter off guard and Ozma's incarnate took back control and answers.
"No. It was my idea." Zack explains he says resting a hand on his chest. "I'm not going to insult you by pretending she didn't do those things. She did. Neo was Torchwick's partner. She worked with Salem's agents to bring down Beacon. Although, unwillingly from what we can gather. She fought us, stolen, assaulted people, and probably committed enough crimes to make whatever file you have on her rather thick."
Neo can be seen behind him giving an offended look at the lack of flattering presentation. "Don't look at me like that, Neo. I'm trying to keep you from getting shot. Or thrown into jail forever." Zack mutters while glancing behind him with his ears twitching.
"And… do you see her as a friend?" Penny then asks next.
…
"Once upon a time, I have her join us because of a common enemy. In addition to my belief that in times of war, we can't be picky on whom we have on our team. That was all. But now? She has helped us more times despite her rogue ways even help civilians get to shelter in Argus before joining the front lines when the Grimm came. So yes. I do consider her as both an ally and friend. Even if she keeps being a nuisance to me and everyone for her entertainment."
"She entered Atlas under a false identity, passed through military security, entered the Academy, and stood three metres from me without a single system detecting her. Do you understand why that concerns me?" Ironwood brings up next before Zack's golden eyes look into his.
"Yes. I can. We did break security protocol, but I had hoped to talk to you about this without leaving Neo in prison. She's part of the team and I refuse to split. At the same time, it cannot be ignored that our journey to get to you personally will have ground to a halt at the docking bay had she not disguised herself."
…
"Are you vouching for her?"
"Vouching that she'll cooperate with us until her target is dead. What she does after that, I'll leave it up to her."
"I see…"
…
Yang joins in with her hands on her hips. "I get it if it's hard to trust her. I can tell ya, she can be a pain in the ass but… I think her time with us had changed her. As Snow princess once said, if you don't trust her, then trust us instead." Though muted, Neo can be seen rolling her eyes dramatically at Yang comment while Weiss glances at her teammate. Never did she expect Yang of all people to quote her as she had said to everyone about trusting her even if they don't trust Ozma after what he hid from them all.
Moreover, Snow Princess? Didn't her boyfriend used to say that about her before they got together? While the next few seconds of absolute silence was suffocating, it changed when Ironwood sighs and brings his gun down after some time. "Specialist Schnee. Stand down."
"Are you sure sir?"
Winter could only ask before receiving a silent nod and with that, she too brings her sword down. Though slowly with distrust still in her eyes. "If she is to join us against Salem and her followers… She remains under supervision."
"Fair enough General. Trust is earned, not given after all. "
"If I may add some rules. She must have no unsupervised access to military facilities. No disappearing without notifying someone. No weapons inside restricted areas. And no disguising herself as military personnel." Winter adds in while Zack could only blink before Neo turns into Winter and dramatically does the 'blah blah blah' which made Ruby and friends giggle.
Except Weiss.
Weiss is concerned because of the death glare Winter's giving to Neo now disgusted as her. "Change back." She orders only for Neo smile in response.
"Neo… As amusing as this can be… I'd rather not have a pissed off Specialist after us. Plus this is not helping your case." Zack mutters while giving Neo a deadpanned look. Thankfully, she obliges and changes back to her normal self. As for Ironwood he simply grimaced. This was not what he expected when Oz came here with everyone.
"Explaining this to the others on why she is here will be complicated…" He could only murmur before Zack chuckles in agreement.
"Yup. When is anything ever simple for us all?"
…
'You know. At times, it is difficult to tell between the two of you apart."
Ironwood observes before Zack takes a breath. Here we go again on his merger. "Tell me about it. I inherit Ozma's traits. He inherits mine. A damn curse it is. Something I hope stopped if possible once Salem is defeated. Much better before the Contingency kicks in and I die."
"That's a lot of hope you're putting in." The General said.
"Better to have some changing semblance of hope than to be stagnant in despair." The fox Faunus says before Ruby snuggles him from behind which earns a look and two from Ironwood and Winter. Then Zack continues, though his voice is significantly softer than before. "When I learned of my end. It shattered my will to keep going you know? Learning that regardless of what you do, it will be for nothing because the Gods want you dead for something you cannot control."
"If I may ask… How old are you?" Winter spoke up as Zack chuckles lightheartedly.
"Fifteen. Sixteen in December." That made the two of them realise that Ozma's host is just a kid. But he acts so mature its boggling to the mind. "I don't act like my age, do I? The past few months forced me to grow up way faster than someone my age should be. Including my mind slowly being merged with the oldest man on Remnant. Chronologically speaking."
Of course Zack failed to mention that part of his memories are not his own, but they don't need to know that.
Shaking his head the fox Faunus turns around to everyone. "Penny, is it okay you take everyone to the cafeteria? I need to hash some things with them on their plan with Oz. You know, adult talk and stuff. Qrow can stay if he likes."
"You can count on me friend Zack! I hope we can talk more later once you are available!" Penny cheerfully agrees while Qrow simply shrugs his shoulders and acknowledging.
"Sure, why not?"
"I'm not leaving." Zack's bodyguard bluntly states with her arms folded.
"Well I suppose Nerium can stay too." Zack gave a reluctant shrug. Then again this is to be expected of his bodyguard despite her rather bad start to diplomatic talks between Atlas and Sanctuary. Seriously, he still questions her decision serve and nominate herself as an initial contact representative of Sanctuary. How bloody well that went. No matter, it still can be salvaged if executed well enough.
Or wait until his uncle gets here.
Either one.
Right now, he needs to bring up to Ironwood about Mantle and how neglected it is.
"Are you not coming with us?" Weiss then asks her boyfriend, and it should be said that Winter's watching the two the whole time. After Nora's remark about Zack being 'lovey-dovey fluffy boyfriend' Winter has been watching the fox Faunus closely like a hawk. It is clear to her that her sister has changed after she escaped Atlas.
If the opportunity is present, a talk is in order.
"Eh, I'll join later. Don't worry about me just yet, okay?" Zack replies as he looks at the others. "The same goes the same for the rest of you. I'll join you guys once I'm done doing the adult talk."
"You better. Don't think we've forgotten about your breakdown just now." Weiss huffed before sighing while Zack could only awkwardly wince. "We'll talk later, alright?" With that, they left with Penny leading the group and happily talking to her friends. Leaving Zack, Qrow, Nerium, Winter and Ironwood left.
"So, what you want to ask them about kiddo?" Qrow ask while Zack rests his fingers on his temple which confuses those who are not aware of what he's doing. "Don't worry about that, he's just doing this so we know that he's chatting with Ozma right now."
"I see."
Ironwood could only hum before whatever conversation between Ozma and his incarnate came to a close as the fox Faunus spoke up. "General, related to the project you showed everyone hours back. I must ask, such endeavours to turn the Amity Colosseum into a new CCTs tower will no doubt cost much in materials and Dust. So I have to ask," Zack learns forward a bit.
"Whose paying for it?"
==================================================================
Fenrir's POV
Another day another pile of paper work to see done. While I can say precisely that nothing of worth has earned my full attention, other that progress has been going well on all accounts. The ancient tunnels of our ancestors to Atlas are progressing beyond what was the expected time frame. As it was brought to me, some of these tunnels have some sort of self maintaining glyphs.
However, it seems to require a source of plant Dust to function.
For that reason, I have ordered for more of those specific types of Dust to be diverted to these tunnels. How they work however I do not know nor to those on sight. All we can understand is that these glyphs somehow consume plant Dust before mending and fortifying the walls with a type of hard wood that is ridiculously dense and light, and they have amber leaves sprouting from them too.
Further initial investigates that previous cracks visible and invisible were filled up with this… wooden bark, and the tunnel walls are covered in this plant matter. Not to the point it obscures expansion but enough to serve as structural supports for the tunnel. It even spread to the rail sleepers, seemingly regenerating, degraded rotten wood to life and reinforcing them as well.
The same cannot be said about the rusted rails which need to be replaced.
And the leaves… Multiple reports are coming that they feel more refreshed than ever before which is surprising knowing how deep, humid and congested the tunnels can be. It was as if the leaves serve as air purifiers in some manner. Some samples have already been taken by the highest echelons of botanist if we were to use the current world standards for study.
It truly makes me wonder how much lost knowledge needs to be rediscovered if our ancestors can create self maintaining tunnels that span hundreds kilometres. Perhaps I should organise more expeditions within the ancient city under our homes instead of leaving an outpost there my forefathers and I had done as a memorial of the past. For all we know, this could be a way for us to recover more ancient relics or knowledge for the war to come.
Good thing we have plenty of Dust to spare after my nephew lost himself to madness and started causing pure man-sized Dust crystals to erupt all over the arena weeks. As uncouth of it to say about my blood-kin. Therefore, that area had to be closed down until all those crystals could be cleared off and harvested uninterrupted.
Besides all the daily paper work on my desk I found myself thinking of yesterday's event. I had Adam Taurus brought to me after he seemingly recalls a portion of his memories yesterday. I still recall it as if it were just minutes ago because what was told that day distresses me greatly, and I could only feel pity and understanding for his downfall to the monster he eventually became.
The day before…
I stood on my throne as Adam was brought to me by one of my Royal Guards. He appears shaken, and I can see tear marks on his cheeks. What had he learned upon recovering his memories that hurt him this much? "Are you alright Adam? What have your reclaimed memories reveal?"
I-I… I remember my youth my parents… They-we were part of the Schnee Dust Company under its founder and owner. Nicholas Schnee… We were his most vocal supporters at the time… He treated everyone with respect and even promoted Faunus into higher positions in a society that scorned us for existing." Adam explains as I signal for him to sit on the chairs as I did the same before I signalled to one of my Royal Guards.
"Get us both a drink, please." With a nod, she left as I return my attention to Adam. "Do continue, Mr Taurus." He nods at me as he continues recounting his memories.
"Yeah. I looked up to him. Because he treated my parents and fellow Faunus with respect and rights. We were rewarded for the good work we did… However… age caught up to him and force him to step down. Then, Jacques took over. That's when everything fell apart. He began stripping us or our labour protections to save costs. Forced my parents and everyone into deeper Dust veins in dangerous working condition. Demoting previous Faunus in management roles and replaced them with his followers because they protested his decision."
Adam gulps for air as I watch him closely. When he first came here, he was a blank slate looking for his origins. Now he got it and its troubling him. I always distrusted the SDC for their sins on our people. But I never knew that once upon a time, they were different. I can see why that young Schnee girl my nephew fell for was insistent that she will right the wrongs of her family's crimes.
Once upon a time, they care for our people and treat them fairly compare to the others in Atlas.
"At first, we started organising protest movements. Demanding the Schnee Dust Company to revert their policies but instead of heeding our voices… They ignored us." Adam sighs as he rubs his head while I remained silent. Sooner than later, my Royal Guard arrived back with some water for the both of us. And as soon as his cup was placed before him, Adam reached for it and drank it all in one go.
"At first, we keep protesting hoping they listen, when our voices were unheard, it became strikes. My parents were the ring leaders at the time. At first, our strikes seem to work, the SDC were forced to the negotiation table. But all along, those at the top were going to make examples out of all of us." He continues his story.
"One day, an accident happened at the work site and… both my parents were caught in a Dust explosion. They didn't make it. The thing is, at first, we all thought that it was just that. An accident. But as the days go on, more evidence came to us that this was planned."
Adam sighed, "After that, we launched another strike and the SDC responded by strike busting and cracking all of us down." His hands trembled, "Knowing this won't change, I… I took my parents stead and led the strikes even though I was an intern. And again and again, I organise more strikes and the SDC kept busting us. Each harsher than the last."
"Then one day, I guess they had enough of me, those at the top had me arrested even though I was an intern at the time, and then…" I watch as Adam gently brushes his scar on his face with a hint of rage underneath the pain in his eyes. "They branded me as an example to everyone before 'firing' me. Apparently, that was enough to get everyone to stop striking..."
I remained silent before Adam looks at me, and for a moment, I fear he would relapse to who he was before. Because I see, bitterness, rage, and determination in his eyes. I wonder if I should have ended him this moment before he becomes a threat to all. But thank the sisters, I see guilt and understanding in there as well. "I think it was when I decided that if no one will listen to me. If achieving rights peacefully without force fails to give results. Then only through violence and intimidation will they listen."
I remain silent to think. The Schnee Dust Company did this because they have the power and influence to do it without consequences. As much as it pains me to say it. "Only those who are strong and powerful can maintain the peace they desire." I mutter out. "That is how the world works, no matter how much everyone claim they are civilised and moved beyond only the strong will survive. The moment power in any form is granted, some will use it to fulfil their desires instead of exercising it responsibly. Just as how the current SDC use their wealth and influence to make more profit at great costs to the soul."
"Why tell me this?" Adam ask me as I smirk.
"Not everyone has a second chance like you, Mr Taurus. While I do not know who or what caused you to become amnesiac, what I do know is that no one can observe their actions from an outsider's perspective, yet you have the chance. The question is, what will you do with this information. Will you let the cycle repeat? Or will you use this to forge a new future for yourself, even if the sins of the past will haunt you forever?"
…
"I don't know." Adam admits to me.
"Then take the time to think and process. Such things cannot be rushed." I advised. "Take my word on it. Perhaps one day, even if the world will never forgive you, you can at least forgive yourself." With that, after some seconds of pondering my words, Adam nods at me before standing up, thanking me for hearing him out and left.
But before he fully leaves my office, I called him out. "Adam…" My voice made him stop at the bull Faunus turns and looks at me. "While I normally will not do this kind of thing since we have an entire profession focusing on the mind and how to help those in need, if you need anything do come to me straight."
Adam gave an acknowledging smile my way. "I will keep that in mind, Great Khan." With that, he departs leaving me to stare at my refection from the water.
"You've given me much to think upon."
Back to the present
I stare at the small shrine dedicated to our true gods in the corner of my office before returning to a report on my propulsion to organise an expedition into our ancestor's city below.. The court has been growing more and more enthusiastic… about their thoughts on the matter. Some were in favour and others were against the idea. Each with their reasons and ideas. Occasionally, I wonder how my late twin sister would have deal with this.
Would she favour this? Would we even leave from our isolationism to being with had she lived and be Khan? If that was the case, would we remain the way we are? Would our gods show that they existed? So many possibilities but such dreams won't matter in reality. It's the past after all. Yet… I still missed her, and my nephew is the only remaining symbol that she once had a life outside our home since her self exile.
The creaking doors of my office soon caught my attention and made my ears perk towards the door, as did the wafting smell of incense. There's only one person who smells of that constantly and is none other than the high priest of the Sisters himself. Wearing armour reminiscent of our past beneath a pure white cloak that covers his head to toe, soft metallic rustling was heard from every step he took as did the wood flooring beneath creaking in response.
In his right hand is a censer of gold and sliver with coloured gems embedded on it, bellowing incense attached to a long pole like a flail and a book of his religious teachings in his left. The high priest. A strange individual even by my standard for his utter devotion to our gods. But one must not underestimate him. I've seen him take on Grimm by himself with his censer as his weapon while reciting the words of our faith.
Every strike of his censer flail spews more incense, chocking those who seek a spar or oppose him, normally such things would also affect him. But he's aware enough of the consequences of constant exposure to smoke that he wears a metallic respirator which covers the lower half of his face. He even has a sword underneath his cloak as an emergency should one somehow manage to disarm him. A rather comical thing is that he is Human, yet, the leading figure of the religious priesthood career path dedicated to the Sisters. Something that has earned reverence and envy from both Humans and Faunus.
"High Priest Aurelian Veyr. Why brings you to my office?" I ask. He is one of the loudest voices of preserving the city below under the reason that I am dishonouring our ancestors. I wonder if Veyr is just here to give me a cease to desist or there's another reason in mind. Then again, he is the type of person to walk in unannounced without requesting an appointment. "If you're here to complain about my proposal, I'm sure you made your point clear earlier." I sigh.
He is very difficult to talk to with his tendency to be two-faced in open and closed doors. Even more so now ever since the Sisters are shown real.
"Nothing of that sort of dramatics, Great Khan."
Veyr rasps under his mask as he waves me off before giving a formal bow my way. "While I openly question your decision for Theological reasons, I must admit I'm rather intrigued by the sudden change of stance on our ancestors graves. I supposed something within the tunnels had warped that perspective?" He asks me while I stare into his teal eyes. Then again, he has proven time after time to be devious behind fanaticism.
"As you know doubt are aware. The discovery within our tunnels have made waves across Sanctuary. The revelation that our ancestors made magical glyphs to ensure the tunnels are well maintained had earned the eyes of the court, and I was left to wonder what else had our ancestors left behind that we don't understand. Something we need to learn if we are to play our part and win the shadow war against the Grimm Witch."
"Plenty I assume." Veyr murmurs.
His breath seemingly rasps under his mask. "It has become apparent that our ancestors have attuned nature with magic. Every rune, every meticulous construction serves a purpose. Yet, all I can understand is that the essence of our Gods are used extensively by our people. Dust is her blood and we are one with her." I sat quietly as he droned on before opening his book with one hand while still clutching onto his flail. "As the texts of the past, written by the past Arakans had said, 'Through the gifts of the natural world, we draw ever closer to the divine.' In accordance to the teachings of the past, our ancestors have attuned themselves with nature."
Veyr slams the book shut before keeping it beneath his cloak. "Yet… this is only one half. Just as one part of the sisters represent nature. The other must represent the opposite. Artificial. Man made. Manufactured. A balance must be established or else the cycle destabilises and loses rhythm. Those are what our gods had told your ancestors. The first Faunus. The first Arakan…"
Destabilises… I do not know your vague lessons. However, if I could guess, you're asking me to exercise restrain while there? A balance between curiosity and caution? "As it was written in scripture, just as one of our gods represents an aspect, the other serves the opposite. Not as an opponent. But like a coin. Two sides. Two faces of the same cycle."
I grow weary of his rambling but I chose to listen on. This is not the first time he repeated the Sisters words to me. "Just as magic played a part in the restoration of our ancestor's ancient tunnels. It only makes sense that relics of our history you find down below may be inaccessible to us all. Perhaps only those who have their gifts restored like the Blessed one can unleash their full potential."
"You believe that some knowledge or whatever we found may need magic to be interacted?" I spoke before Veyr nods his head.
"Indeed my Khan. It only makes sense if one ponders on it. All previous generations of Arakans in the centuries past can use magic granted by the sisters. Think on it. What we saw in the tunnels is just a hint of our past. Of how integrated the immaterial is with the material. One cannot exist without the other and instead, they integrate with one another to a greater whole. Just as it was told from the lessons the first Arakan learned from the Sisters of Twilight. 'To neglect or abandon one side is to make yourself blind to the other."
"So let me get this straight." I raise a finger. "You approve of my decision to propose an expedition into the city below. But warning me that caution must be taken down there and whatever I find may not be useful unless I possess the Sister's magical gifts."
"Correct." He confirms for me. Wonderful. I suppose that means that my nephew may be the only one who can access any of those relics if we find any.
"It is still worth the effort. We venerate our ancestors. But we fail to truly understand them. We left their cities honouring the past, but we miss on what they learned and the stories they can share with us. Think about it. Wouldn't it be a delightful experience to discover what our ancestors lives were like in those cities? What traditions they carry before it becomes what we know of?"
"Indeed. I still recommend you heed my words, our ancestors are not one to be fools, I advise caution while our people explore their lands for any potential traps designed to ward off thieves and trespassers. Additionally, I wonder how long before the other Kingdoms discover our ancient cities when this is over. Will they protect them? Learn? Or pillage them? How would your kin in the far south react to them? Either way, the faster we explore the city beneath us and restore our ancient tunnels, the faster we can look at the others before opportunists come and take everything that is ours."
You are assuming we can do this and wage war against Salem at the same time, High Priest. Unless we collaborate with the Kingdoms in this endeavour. I still think we're going too far with this when we have not laid our eyes on their sacred lands in a long time.
"Until next time Great Khan. Know that while I openly disagree with your proposal, I still support it." With that, Veyr departs. Leaving me to ponder his words. It seems there is still much to figure out below. Perhaps I should check with Faelwyn and see how his projects to arm out people for the coming war is going.
==================================================================
Zack walks through Atlas Academy with Nerium behind him and Qrow by his side. "Well that could have gone worse…" The fox Faunus thought to himself. He expected Ironwood to get evasive when asking who was paying the price, but wasn't expecting the General to be straightforward and only gets defensive once he pressed further.
Still, it was a back and forth with the General admitting that resources are being redirected where necessary. Before the Fox Faunus questions about defensive needs like the Mantle walls. Are they being neglected too? Something which Ironwood confirmed through gritted teeth. The next thing that happened were the General and Winter justifying themselves that the diversion of resources from Mantle will be temporary, and they will be compensated through additional patrols, automated units and Penny's deployment.
Something which Zack already knew from Canon.
"I'd say that this was absolutely necessary." Ozma whispered in his thoughts. "I never realised the full extent of my friend's plan until you 'grilled' him for it all. While I understand the requirements for such project, I feel he could have handled it with more… elegance." Indeed, it was. Ironwood was quick to argue that the normal public appropriation process is too risky. Or he did not explain to the Council why certain components are suddenly matters of national security without risking exposure.
The thing is, Zack agrees with it to an extent. Because the more people who are in the project, the higher the chance for a leak to happen. And that could lead to Salem receiving the plan earlier than needed. However, the fox Faunus was quick to point out that acting all secretive is doing himself no favour and makes him incredibly suspicious to everyone.
Not just in Atlas but in Mantle below who are suffering from the lack of resources. Something that Nerium did not hesitate to point out that prioritising the project at the cost of everything else is causing more cracks down the line. This time with more caution of words than last time. And more cracks mean more opportunity for the enemy to wiggle in and exploit. Besides, his warriors cannot be at all places at all times.
A wall on the other hand, can buy enough time for reinforcements to arrive.
Eventually, Zack asks the important question.
"Do they know why?" And that left the general speechless as the fox Faunus recalls asking next.
"From Mantle's point of view, the General of Atlas is taking resources needed to keep the Grimm out and refusing to explain why. Do you really expect them to trust that you know what you're doing when you're leaving them exposed to the Grimm?"
Which made Winter act more defensive before reluctantly asking what they do about it? Which Zack refers to the conversation earlier. Controlled exposure. Let the council hear his plans. Hear of Salem. And let the most influential in Mantle know why Ironwood is doing this. Then prioritise the wall until his uncle arrives.
Something that made Ironwood raise a brow until Zack suggested that his uncle could help send supplies over once he arrived here in the coming months. While it may not be the extent Atlas is capable of, it would be enough to quell the unrest in Mantle below. Which brings on to the last point of his conversation with them.
They should really update their cybersecurity in the coming months. And when asked, Zack simply said that the person responsible for driving his Knights nuts in Beacon is still out there somewhere. And that means that the Network that Atlas is using is potentially compromised. With that, the fox Faunus departs because he has taken enough time and Ironwood needs time to think upon everything so far and…
He's hungry.
"Well, at least that goes with the initial problems. I guess later you'll tell him your story? Since you did ask him to call you by your original name and stuff." Zack then asks the wizard within him and feels a nod his way.
"Indeed. James needs to know my origins. The same goes for the rest of my colleagues when I get the opportunity. Most importantly Glynda." Ozma's guilt for hiding so many secrets from Glynda is notably stronger than expected that even Zack can feel it. But the fox Faunus held off from asking since no doubt, she worked and trusted him more closely than others and is likely she will not react well to the lie he kept going.
Probably.
Then again she might be content seeing her 'boss' again and knowing how much he changed over the months.
"Thanks for backing me up earlier, Qrow." Zack smiles before looking at his bodyguard. "And Nerium, good work holding some restraint. What you did just now is the standard I wish to expect from you. Firm, but not to the point of insulting." Nerium just nodded silently under her mask. Though it was clear that she's pleased about the compliment.
"Well, what can I say?" Qrow chuckles. "Never expect to see Jimmy so defensive, but I'm glad you pointed out what he missed. Had you not asked about where he's getting his supplies for his pet project, I would have. So, think he'll think through it?" He asks Ozma's incarnation while his fox ears twitch.
"Eh. It's up to Ironwood to decide. Besides, if he needs some guidance from Oz, he only needs to ask." Zack's smile faded slightly. "Still, I count us lucky that he's willing to listen. That means he hasn't gone off the roof just yet."
"I see… Well, good to know about that I guess." Qrow mutters before Nerium spoke up next.
"And what now, Zack?"
"Well, mainly food and maybe a couple of hours of rest before we resume our talk with everyone. That's for sure. I still need to eat and see how the others are doing while General Ironwood will need plenty of time to settle down on what we dropped on him the whole morning. And besides." Zack's tails sways like the wind.
"We have only been here for half a day. Everyone would benefit from a little respite and I have no doubt that the others will be grateful." As they keep walking onwards, a pink-haired woman in a white officer suit walks by them, holding her hat slanted as though to shield her eyes. And while it was nothing at first, Zack felt a familiarity from that woman and paused his step with eyes wide open.
"Kid? What's wrong?" Qrow was the first to ask while Nerium glanced back at the woman who had also stopped walking.
"Ishmael?" The fox Faunus could only mutter before turning to see the woman doing the same and… It's her… With her light gray which borders on the white and empty eyes. "What are you doing here?" What is she even doing here? He hasn't fully recovered from the fact that the Sisters used him so they could take back what's theirs.
The revelation of the betrayal still stings and thus, it is… a touchy subject right now.
"Greeting Zack and others, do not mind my presence here, I am simply enjoying a nice walk through Atlas Academy. It is rare one can see such technological marvels." A soft smile was on her face as Nerium instantly dropped to her knees while Qrow looked around. Only to see no one was around to see them. "And worry not of anyone seeing me. Only you three can because I permit it. Nor will the cameras record my appearance."
"So that's how you looked. Have to admit, I did not expect to come face to face with a god here." Qrow concedes before whistling. "Damn. Won't lie, you're gorgeous even by the beauts I have seen all over the world. Minus the eyes. It's hella disturbing." Zack's eyes snap wide towards Qrow. He did not just admit to a god that she's stunning and creepy at the same time! How shameless he can be!
Thankfully, the Goddess did not take any issue with that. "There is a first time with everyone, Mr Branwen." Ishmael chuckles lightly as her cold eyes gaze upon Zack's bodyguard. "Nerium, please go back to your feet, while your reverence for me is appreciated, you do look strange on your knees the whole time to nothing the others will see."
With a silent nod and beckoning from her charge, she does that while Zack asks again "Seriously What brings you here?" The fox Faunus asks again while his ears visibly twitched as did his tails. He knows that eventually he needs to talk to the Sisters again. But the fact Ishmaels is wandering through the halls of Atlas Academy like she's a tourist?
He wants to know the real reason.
"Again, young Arakan. I'm just sightseeing Atlas in person. It has been a millennium since we walked this world. Well, not literally since we were more like spirits exploring the land that was ours. But in fact, I always have an affinity for the artificial." The goddess admits while Qrow murmurs.
"Artificial? What do you mean by that?"
"Well, think of it this way, Mr Branwen, my sister's affinity is more tied to nature as I'm sure Zack can attest when he visited the underworld once and twice. So anything related to them will earn her liking. As for me. I always admire the material creativity of humanity and Faunuskind. Think architecture or the idea of technology and civilization as a whole." Ishmael explains.
"So is your sister against civilization? Just curious."
Qrow asks again before the goddess before them snorts with a giggle. Against? No. Then again, she and AWOR never really told their champion how their ideology and faith works.
"Against? Not really. While it is true, we represent opposites of one another, we believe both are necessary. Just as one aspect my sister represents is stability, I represent the opposite. Change. A transition from the status quo. But one needs the other to have meaning. The same can be said for joy and sadness. How can one feel joy if they never experience sadness? But before we go off course, we also hold the belief that excess of one thing will destabilise everything."
"So you preach moderation." Zack comes to the conclusion.
"Eh… not accurate but close enough. The more accurate term will be dynamic equilibrium. Sometimes significant change may be necessary to restore balance and sometimes strong stability may be necessary after chaos." Ishmael gave a so-so gesture. "If chance permits it, I'd love to have a look at Penny. She's a fascinating example of technology, is she? A body of metal and wires, yet possesses a soul. An individual spawned from her father's love and Semblance. Can't say we've seen anything in our entire existence before…"
She admits before her eyes seemingly looks behind everyone. "Speaking of which… She is coming here right now, and I'll make my departure. May we share another conversation once you are well enough to talk to us again." With a single goodbye wave, the Goddess vanishes from sight as Penny's footsteps grow ever louder.
"There you are!" Penny calls out before coming to an absolute halt at ridiculous speeds. "Friend Zack. Friend Ruby and others are growing weary of the extended time taken before your arrival at the cantina after conducting adult talkings! Has the conversation with General Ironwood proceeded without any setbacks?"
"Well yeah, everything went well enough." Qrow answers for Zack who simply nods his head, as does Nerium.
"Spectacular!" Penny cheers with her hands up in the sky before she Zack by the arm and begins tugging him with her. All the while, the fox Faunus just accepts this and lets himself be dragged along while Qrow and Nerium follow on. "Your friends told me so much about your adventures and fun! I heard you even created a new card game, did you?"
"Uhh… yeah I did make that and… I hope what they share about me is all good?" Zack could only mutter as Penny faces him again with a bright smile.
"Yes, indeed! They told me of how they first met you in Mistral and how you eventually became part of their group! Oh, I hope we can simulate that as well as we become friends!"
…
"Yeah. That sounds nice" The fox Faunus mutters before hiding a frown from everyone. "I wish… I wish when it happens, we can stop your death Penny. No one as pure hearted such as you deserved to die. Your final death hurt Ruby from what Celeste told me. I won't let that happen to you. For yours and our sake."
