Chapter 3 - The First Enemy

The sky was still painted with the fading colors of sunset when Arihant left the library.

The old man's words echoed continuously in his mind.

"Are you ready to question everything you believe about life?"

At that moment, Arihant had answered yes. But as he walked through the narrow streets of the town, he began to realize how heavy that answer truly was.

Questioning everything meant questioning society.

Questioning traditions.

Questioning even his own thoughts.

And perhaps the most difficult of all—questioning his own ego.

The road back to the village was quiet.

A cool breeze moved through the trees, and the sound of crickets slowly filled the evening air. Arihant walked slowly, lost in thought.

He remembered the old man's words about the enemies of the mind.

Anger.

Pride.

Greed.

Attachment.

Invisible forces that quietly controlled human behavior.

Arihant wondered which of them was strongest inside him.

He did not have to wait long to find out.

As he reached the village square, he saw a group of young men sitting near the tea stall. They were laughing loudly, enjoying the calm evening.

Among them was Raghav.

Raghav had known Arihant since childhood. But unlike Arihant, he believed life was simple: earn money, gain respect, and enjoy power.

When Raghav noticed Arihant approaching, a mischievous smile appeared on his face.

"Well, look who's here," he said loudly. "The village philosopher."

The other boys laughed.

Arihant remained silent and continued walking.

But Raghav was not finished.

"I heard you spend your time reading strange books in that old library," he continued. "Are you planning to become a saint now?"

More laughter followed.

Normally, Arihant would have ignored such comments.

But something inside him reacted immediately.

His chest tightened.

His heartbeat became faster.

Anger began rising like fire inside his mind.

For a moment, he imagined responding with sharp words. He imagined humiliating Raghav in front of everyone.

The temptation felt strong.

Very strong.

Then suddenly, another thought appeared.

Anger is an inner enemy.

The words from the library echoed again.

Arihant stopped walking.

The boys waited, expecting a reaction.

Inside his mind, a silent battle had begun.

One part of him demanded revenge.

Why should you tolerate this insult?

Show them you are not weak.

But another voice spoke more calmly.

If your peace can be destroyed by a few words… who is really in control?

Arihant realized something uncomfortable.

The enemy was not Raghav.

The enemy was the anger growing inside his own mind.

For several seconds, he stood there without speaking.

Raghav raised his eyebrows.

"What happened?" he said mockingly. "Did the philosopher lose his words?"

The crowd laughed again.

But this time, Arihant simply looked at him quietly.

Then he smiled.

Not a sarcastic smile.

A calm one.

"Maybe," Arihant said softly, "or maybe I am just learning when words are unnecessary."

The laughter stopped.

Raghav looked slightly confused.

Arihant continued walking.

No argument.

No anger.

No reaction.

Just silence.

When he reached his house, the sky had already turned dark.

He climbed to the rooftop again, the same place where his journey had begun.

The stars had returned.

Arihant sat down and closed his eyes.

His mind replayed the incident in the village square.

He realized something surprising.

The anger had not completely disappeared.

It had only weakened.

Deep inside, a small part of him still felt hurt.

Still wanted revenge.

And that realization made him understand something important.

Defeating inner enemies was not a single battle.

It was a long war.

A war fought inside the mind every day.

Arihant opened his eyes and looked at the stars again.

For the first time, he truly understood the difficulty of the path he had chosen.

To become an Arihant meant conquering every inner enemy.

Only then could a soul reach the state of Siddha, a state of complete freedom described in Jainism.

But tonight had taught him something valuable.

The first enemy had revealed itself.

Anger.

And though he had not defeated it completely, he had at least taken the first step toward controlling it.

Arihant whispered quietly to himself,

"The real battlefield is within."

The night remained silent.

But deep inside his mind, a journey of transformation had truly begun.
