Chapter 9 - Urrigon Targaryen's Victory

Early 120 AC

Urrigon heard his mother's screams before he entered her room.

Both Ser Rickard and Ser Cole gave him a nod as he walked past.

In the room were his two brothers Aegon and Aemond, in the center was the Queen.

Both of their heads down cheeks red as they received her verbal lashing.

In the center of her room, in her green dress stood the Queen who seemed to tower over them.

"You shame yourself before the King, Aegon!", said Alicent , " Why is there nothing you can do right?!"

Aegon raised his head to face his mother, his expression panicked "Mother he was going to hur–"

Alicent grabbed his face, her nails digging into his cheeks, "First I catch you fornicating with yourself in your room this very morning like some dog, "Her voice curled with disgust. "Degeneracy compounded by stupidity… how you shame me, rotting us all with your weakness".

She looked ready to turn on Aemond until she had finally noticed Urrigon at the door, she let go of Aegon, shoving his face away.

"You!"

"Moth–"

He saw it, her arm winding back, palm wide, teeth clenched.

He saw it.

He could have moved out of the way, his mother was no Harwin. No Knight

He could have caught her wrist, broken it if he chose.

But the Seven curse the kinslayer.

The slap landed with a sharp crack, his head twisting violently to the side, his neck snapping with the force of it.

His cheek flared, his ears rang.

His mother's love.

"You have ruined everything!" she screamed at him, "All the progress I have made to guarantee your brother's future might have all been undone away by your ungratefulness".

Urrigon stayed silent.

"Have you nothing to say?" she sneered "Where is your boldness now? Where was this meekness when you dared speak against your father, nearly bringing ruin on us all with your childish arrogance?"

"Mot–"

The second slap cracked across his other cheek.

"Do not call me mother!, for sons do not spit upon their mother's sacrifices" , She slapped him again for good measure.

The third blow came quick and savage, knuckles rapping across his jaw.

Harwin Strong's body lies cold in the dirt, yet he was still paying off his debt.

May he burn in the Seven Hells.

Aemond's voice cracked from behind her, barely louder then a whisper "M-mother… w-why… Urri… he—"

Alicent rounded on him and her eyes glared at him, "OUT", as she pointed to the door arm fully stretched.

Aemond recoiled as if he was struck himself.

Looking at both of his brothers with trembling lips, Aegon gave a nod to reassure him and Urrigon followed.

The door opened and shut, Urrigon caught one last glimpse of Aemond's teary face before it disappeared.

Ser Rickard would escort him.

"He did it for you…"

Alicent's wrathful expression froze, and her eyes narrowed at his eldest brother, "What was that Aegon?"

"He did it for you…" he repeated, louder.

"He saw how much he hurt you, our whole family" , Aegon voice was becoming more confident, "We all saw it mother, Jacaerys said it infront of father".

Alicent simply blinked, she looked ready to attack Aegon but something cracked.

It old and raw beneath the mask of anger.

She turned away from them both, pacing to her bedside and sat down onto bed, sinking into her pillows.

"And do you really think Viserys cares for a bastard words?" said Alicent her voice now sombre,"Do you think your father does not see any of it? He knows".

The queen covered her face with her hands

"After you all left, who do you think still pleaded for you? Who bore his lectures? His grief?"

"Who suffers Viserys punishments? While the servants and even that fool mushroom mock me behind my back when they think me deaf?

"When he calls for me warms his bed, when I cannot refuse him in fear for you all?"

She turned her head to the both of them her eyes wide and red.

"Who pays?"

Aegon mouth hung open, he and Urrigon had no reply.

When no answer came, the queen gave a bitter laugh, "You are your father's sons truly, never thinking about how your actions harm those around you, only caring for yourself".

Her arms fell to her side, revealing tears streaming down her face.

"Why did I ever have to bear the two of you?" she said, "Why do the seven punish me with sons like you, I would have been happier if you'd never been born".

Both Urrigon and Aegon looked at their mother then at each other. Both brothers had no words.

The Queen's chamber was silent.

Then came a knock at the door. Soft and timid.

It creaked open by an inch, and a meek voice, most likely a servant came through the crack. "Forgive me, Your Grace… but the King summons you. Post haste."

And the Queen laughed.

The walk back to their rooms were silent, the only sounds were their footstepts echoing across the empty corridoors.

Aegon strode ahead of him, he could not see his face but the way his shoulders hunched over already told him what he wanted to know.

They both said nothing when they reached the door of Aegon's room.

Aegon turned his head to look at him and as he mouth opened, no words came out.

Aegon kept repeatably opening and closing his mouth, trying to speak, to verbalize. No words came.

Urrigon moved forward and grabbed his brothers shoulder and turned him to face him.

He noticed the tears falling down his brothers face, the despair written on it.

And he hugged his brother. Wrapping his arms around him and with his right hand grabbing the back of his hand.

Aegon made no move to reciprocate the gesture and just frozen

"Aeg..",said Urrigon.

His brothers shoulder began to tremble.

"Aeg I…"he had no comforting words to give, nothing that could aid him.

But Aegon understood and quickly wrapped his arms Urrigon.

"Urri…why?", his brother's whispered.

Aegons hand gripped the back of Urrigon's tunic, "Why were we born?"

Urrigon said nothing but held his brother close.

"Why does mother love Aemond, Helena, Daeron but not us?"

He could not find a answer to give.

"Why does our father hate us?" Aegon leaned his head onto Urrigon's shoulder.

"Why?"

He felt the silent tears on his shoulder.

Urrigon needed to say something, anything to help his brother.

But no words came.

Eventually after some time they separated, as Aegon retreated inside his room Urrigon was left alone in the corridors.

He stands there for a moment before turning around and walking away.

He could not go to his room and he would find no comfort there.

No answer to the questions asked

So he went where he could.

Traveling through the royal apartments and out of the Red Keep Urrigon traveled outside of them, to the world outside.

When he entered the open space he felt the cold night air of the Red Keep stables and went across it towards the serpentine stairs that led up the Royal sept.

Urrigon pauses and looks up at the night sky, their was no stars, only a pale moon.

He closed his eyes and felt the cold air upon his body. The courtiers would hear of what he had done in the following days, or they have already.

How he avenged his mother and family, how he fulfilled what they Seven bade him to do in his teachings. To not tolerate evil, to send those who commit to the Stranger.

A flash of Ser Harwin's corpse fills Urrigon's mind suddenly, a wooden rod in his eye. He can see the man's breath leaving him, he can hear the cries of his nephews.

His hands begin to tremble, his breath shacky. Rhaenyra's hateful eye's fill his soul and the cry of the newborn Joffrey brings his hands to his face.

He feels the moon stare at him, judging. Were the Seven pleased with him?

He hears it voice, perhaps his own.

"Murderer".

Urrigon opens his eyes quickly, dark amethyst and bright emerald eyes search everywhere, trying to locate the voice.

After a few minutes, he is convinces himself that it was just the night wind playing tricks on him.

Taking a deep breath to calm himself, Urrigon climbs he stairs to reach the sept.

But each step the voice repeats.

"Murderer".

Urrigon does not look back but continues up the steps, his auburn hair blowing in the wind. His gaze on the sept door's.

"Murderer!"

His legs begin to feel lame, slowly losing feeling but he continues on, he was so close.

"MURDERER!"

His hands reach the handles of the Royal Sept door, finally he was at the top. He pulls.

"MURDERER!MURDERER!MURDERER!"

It does not open, Urrigon clenches his teeth, his body feeling weak he pulls and pulls.

"MURDERER!MURDERER!MURDERER!"

He turns, putting his back against the door and from the depths of his heart he speaks.

"I AM NO MURDERER!" he screams at the night, at the moon.

All was silent.

Urrigon breathes deeply. His body tense and his hands clenching.

"Who dare make accusations to me? To the prince!"

The night did not answer him. Silence was all that he met.

Them slowly, door of the sept opened.

Urrigon nearly falls but catches himself and twists his body to face the insides of the Sept.

Moon light shines through the High windows of the building, its crystal windows turning it into a pale rainbows. The fragrant candles were long dead.

His eyes search the room, to see who opened for him but he found none.

Slowly he walks inside, towards the front of the room, towards the the alters of the Seven.

He falls on his knees.

All of the alters had turned their backs on him.

"Why do you tortue me so? All I had done was to clean the stain of my family, to rid vermin from my dynasty? Should you all not be pleased?"

Urrigon crawls to the alter and grips with both hands, desperate.

"You found me back me then and ever since I felt only gratitude, I felt your love!"

His hand grasping at the marble.

What had changed from them?

Ser Harwin lied punished, Urrigon eyes looked at each of the backs of the Alter.

Nut he had made a mistake, not all of them had turn their backs on him.

One still shows their face to him.

The Stranger.

A shaky breath leave his lips.

He knew what that meant.

"Prince Urrigon" , came a voice.

Urrigon turns his head behind him, towards the entrance of the sept.

Their stood ser Rickard Thorne, his Kingsguard armour was as pale and white as the moon. Urrigon could not see his face.

"Prince Urrigon….why?", said the Knight, his voice carrying a complex of emotion.

The Prince made to stand, he stumbles and nearly falls before catching himself on one the alter.

The Kingsguard rushes to help but Urrigon raises his hand to stop.

Both eyes stared at each other, a familiar scene from long ago.

"Prince Urrigon, why did you do it"!

He gave the Kingsguard no answer and fully rose, his feet now stable.

Urrigon feels the stranger on his back, crawling beneath his skin when the Kingsuard spoke.

"Prince Urrigon, why have you killed once more?"
