The message still burned against her skin, its words etched into her thoughts no matter how many times she turned them over:
"You left him alive tonight. Not wise."
She lay in the oversized bed Logan Mason insisted she use—his bed, technically, though she'd fought against sleeping beside him more than once. Tonight, he hadn't pushed her. He'd smirked, kissed her knuckles in that infuriatingly arrogant way of his, and left her alone. It should have been a relief. Instead, the silence of the room made her pulse too loud in her ears.
She rose before dawn, slipping into her clothes with silent precision. Old habits never left; the assassin in her still preferred the quiet hours when the world hadn't yet woken. She padded toward the balcony, the cool air of the morning biting at her bare arms. The city below looked deceptively calm. No one would guess a predator had stepped into their orbit.
