"This wasn't supposed to happen," I said more quietly. "I know that. We weren't supposed to feel anything. But we did. I did." I searched her face, desperate now.

"Not everything has to be romance, Nita. Sometimes, it can be about scratching an itch."

The words left her mouth with precision. They weren't hers—not originally. They were mine. Mine from months ago, tossed carelessly into the air when I'd thought myself clever, detached, untouchable.

"You remember that, don't you?" she continued, eyes glittering. "Well, all those nights were about scratching an itch."

The glass in her hand slammed onto the table. She didn't look back at me as she turned and walked toward her room.

Well. Fuck.

I stood there long after she disappeared down the hallway, staring at the bar. I'd thought myself immune to consequences. Turns out, arrogance has excellent memory.
