Chapter 11 - The World's Between

Jax's breath caught in his throat.

There was no floor beneath him, no sky above. Only motion—a blur of stars, echoes of shattered timelines, and currents of memories that weren't entirely his. He tumbled through an astral corridor, fragments of other lives brushing against his soul. A king on a dying world. A child holding a broken hourglass. A warrior who fell screaming into the void.

All of them… him?

The shards in his chest pulsed with blinding intensity, anchoring him—barely. He reached out, trying to orient himself, and felt resistance. The chaotic drift began to slow. The world around him reformed.

He landed.

Hard.

Stone cracked beneath his knees. The light dimmed. Silence pressed in like a held breath.

When he looked up, he was no longer in the labyrinth.

He stood in a circular chamber, impossibly vast, suspended in a sea of cosmic twilight. Floating islands spun lazily through the void outside the shattered walls, tethered to the platform by threads of liquid starlight. Above him, a fractured moon bled silver fire into a sky that held constellations he had never seen.

And in the center of the chamber… a throne.

Empty.

But not abandoned.

"You're early," said a voice behind him.

Jax turned sharply, instinctively raising his weapon—but froze.

A figure leaned casually against one of the fractured pillars, arms crossed. They wore no armor, no crown. Just a long coat stitched with fading constellations and eyes that mirrored the cosmos itself.

"You're not the Supreme," Jax said slowly.

The stranger smirked. "No. But he sends his regards."

Jax lowered the rifle, but didn't holster it. "Who are you?"

"The last one who stood where you're standing," the stranger replied. "The one who failed."

Jax narrowed his eyes. "You were a Seeker."

"I was the Seeker," the man said. "The first. The original. The one they built the labyrinth for."

The revelation hit like a strike to the gut.

He had read fragments, hints of a forgotten predecessor. The Seeker Prime. No records of their fate.

Now he knew why.

The man pushed off the pillar and stepped closer. "You've done well, Jax. Two shards retrieved. The Forgotten Gate unlocked. Most don't even survive the awakening."

"But I did."

"Yes." His smile faded. "And that's the problem."

Jax tensed. "What do you mean?"

"You're moving too fast," the man said, voice sharp now. "The Supreme doesn't want a successor. He wants a scapegoat. You think these tests are about worthiness? No. They're about containment."

A chill slid down Jax's spine. "That's not true."

"It is," the man said, stepping aside to reveal the throne again—only now, shadows pooled at its base, coalescing into a chained figure. Silent. Bound in threads of pure paradox.

Jax's heart stopped.

The chained figure… looked like him.

"What—?"

"The end of every path," the Seeker said bitterly. "You reach the gate, they name you heir—and then they bind you here, forever. You become the next lock. The next guardian. Another cog in the cycle."

"No." Jax stepped back. "That's not my fate."

"It wasn't mine either," the man said. "And yet, here we are."

The shards in Jax's chest flared violently, as if in rebellion. The chamber trembled.

"You can fight it," the Seeker said, eyes narrowing. "But there's only one way to break the pattern."

The chained version of Jax stirred. Its head lifted slowly, and though its face remained bound, a single tear traced down its cheek. A mirror of warning—or regret.

"I need you to kill me," the Seeker said.

The words hit like thunder.

"What?"

"You heard me." He held out a blade formed from crystallized time. "Strike me down. Shatter the loop. Only then will the throne lose its hold. Only then can you become more than another puppet of the Supreme."

Jax stared at the blade.

Everything in him screamed against it—against this.

But deep inside, something else stirred.

Not doubt.

Not fear.

Choice.

His fate was no longer scripted. The labyrinth had bowed to his will. He had survived the Supreme's trial. He had bled, fought, and changed.

He looked at the chained version of himself.

At the Seeker.

At the blade.

"I don't want to be a weapon," Jax said quietly, voice tinged with something raw. "But if I don't make this choice… someone else will be trapped in my place. Won't they?"

The Seeker said nothing. His silence was answer enough.

Jax's hands trembled as he reached forward. He took the blade, its hilt cold and heavy with consequence.

Around them, the chamber shifted again. The constellations outside the walls spiraled violently. The throne pulsed with energy, reacting to the decision being made.

"I'll do this," Jax said. "But not for the Supreme. Not for the labyrinth. Not even for you."

He stepped forward. "I'll do it for me. For the freedom to choose my path."

The Seeker smiled sadly. "Then you've already succeeded."

Jax raised the blade.

A final breath.

And he struck.
