Chapter 2 - Why?......

The little girl stood frozen in shock, her wide eyes darting desperately between her parents. Fear coursed through her, amplified by the sight of a man in a dark, specialized uniform, his weapon ominously aimed at her head. Trembling, she called out to her parents, her voice shaky and fragmented as panic took hold of her.

"There's no purpose in shrouding secrets any longer," the assassin declared, a tempest of emotion swirling within. "It cost me a great deal of anguish to uncover your whereabouts; I feared I might spiral into madness, all the while knowing your kind roamed the shadows—monsters that you are!"

"Honey, what is he talking about?" The husband was utterly bewildered by the unfolding situation. He desperately wished to convey to this man that he must be mistaken, that this was all a grand misunderstanding. Yet, as he glanced at his wife, her silence cast a shadow of suspicion. A tempest of thoughts swirled in his mind, fear gripping his heart for their daughter's safety. "Honey, he doesn't know what he's talking about, right?"

"I am not of your kind; I am a creature of shadows, yet believe me when I confess that I fell deeply in love with you, and my heart held no malice! I had heard whispers that our kind could not bear offspring with the human race, so I dared to dream of a life lived in the quiet, away from prying eyes. But lo and behold, I discovered to my astonishment that I had given birth to a precious daughter, a beautiful blend of our two worlds. I am truly sorry; I thought I could remain hidden after my daring escape from the facility. At first, I sought freedom, never imagining that love would weave its way into my fate, but I was gravely mistaken." She spoke, her voice trembling with raw emotion.

"I cannot fathom this, my dear. I find it impossible to accept a single utterance from this man's lips. There's no manner in which you could betray my trust. My heart refuses to believe it; you cannot be a monster, can you?" he contended, enveloped in utter denial.

"It's true." The words quavered from her lips, as she averted her gaze to escape any semblance of contact. She dreaded witnessing the turmoil on his face, the echo of his retching filling the air in response to her revelation and confession.

"My precious little girl, lend me your ears. Close your eyes, and you shall find yourself in a realm of joy." Her voice, imbued with warmth and love, enveloped her daughter like a tender embrace.

He found himself at a loss for words in response to his wife's chilling revelation about their child. The very idea of sharing a bed with a creature he could only describe as a monster sent shivers down his spine, clinging to him like a heavy fog. Yet, despite the turmoil brewing in his mind, his love for his daughter remained unwavering. Each beat of his heart echoed with a fierce determination; he would go to any lengths, confront any shadow, to ensure her safety and shield her from the darkness that loomed over their family.

" Yes, mommy," the little girl replied in her sweet and innocent tone. Though she grasped little of the unfolding situation, she understood that heeding her mother's words was the path of righteousness. With her eyes gently closed, she heard a thunderous noise, as if a gun had been fired.

The little girl opened her eyes wide as her father's urgent voice pierced the air, shouting, "Run!" A jolt of fear coursed through her. "Don't worry, I will be right behind you," he assured, his words imbued with hope, yet tinged with an undertone of pain that hinted at his frailty.

Tears began to cascade down the little girl's face, her eyes wide with terror as uncertainty enveloped her. He turned his body toward her slowly, a pained smile gracing his lips, and whispered, "I'm glad you're okay." Gently, he patted her head, his voice strained as he continued, "Do not look back and be happy."

The little girl wept, tears mingling with the snot that dripped from her nose. "Daddy, I can't be happy without you! What about your happiness?" she implored, her voice laced with worry as he coughed up blood. He summoned all his strength to smile through the agony and replied, "I'm already happy; you fill up my happiness radar. My joy springs from you." Yet, the little girl noticed her father's injuries, and a shadow of fear crept into her heart, whispering of darker days ahead.

"Daddy, I simply can't survive without you and Mommy!"

He tenderly placed his hand upon his daughter's cheek, his fingers delicately sweeping away her tears, a gentle smile gracing his lips. "Don't cry, baby girl. It saddens me to see you like this. No matter what, we will always be together," he whispered, enveloping her in a warm embrace. "I promise."
