"Arthur?" she called softly, breaking his long silence.
His gaze flicked to her, unreadable. He must have realized she wouldn't let it go until he said something.
"I think…" His voice was steady, though colder than usual. "…you should do whatever makes you happy."
"I see." Nnenna nodded slowly. Then, as if testing him, she added, "And you would be happy if Darius and I ended up together?"
The question landed like a stone in still water. Both men stiffened, Carl's eyes widening. He nearly asked her what exactly she was getting at, suspecting she knew far more than she should, but Arthur beat him to it.
"Where's this coming from?" His tone sharpened, but he caught himself, forcing it into a measured calm.
Nnenna turned to face him fully, expression unreadable, almost innocent. "I don't know. I just want to know if you approve. Should it have to come from anywhere?"
