"After I exited the Ministry, I wandered the streets a bit until I found an abandoned warehouse. I was soooo angry! I felt betrayed by the Wizarding world. If it wasn't for Hermione and my owl Hedwig, I wouldn't have any connection to the Wizarding world. I didn't know what to do. If we hadn't planned ahead like we did, I would have nothing, and would not have had any help. Hedwig found me and set me straight, though. She told me I had people on my side, others who cared for me. She encouraged me to call for Dobby. Can you imagine? I mean, I know I would talk to Hedwig all the times I was locked up in my room at the Dursleys, but she talked back! Not with real words, mind you, but she made her intentions known. It was amazing! I owe her sooo much.
I called Dobby and asked him if he could keep my secrets. He told me that he could but only if he was bonded. I told Dobby I did not want a slave. Dobby explained to me the symbiotic relationship between wizards and elves. I set some ground rules and we bonded. Then Dobby helped me get in contact with Gringotts, see a healer (who fixed a LOT of problems and prescribed me some nutrition potions), got me some clothes and that trunk of yours, and helped me choose my new name. After doing some research on the new family name, I was biding my time when I came across the recruiting station. The rest, as they say, is history."
"After the news furor about my banishment died down, I cast fidelius on the secret that Harry Potter is Evan Fenix. I also cast fidelius on the secret that Hedwig is my owl. Really it's more like I am her human, but the real association is the other way around. Of course, I had to work up to being able to cast it wandlessly because my wand was snapped. In fact, I had to learn all the spells we learned years 1-4 plus year 5 wandlessly. I also learned some other spells more pertinent to me while being in the military."
"The Sergeant at the recruitment center told me that if I wanted to be in the Royal Marines I would have to improve my physique and endurance. I began exercising, I took swimming lessons at the YMCA, and I enrolled at a martial arts studio. I learned some things at that martial arts studio, Hermione. It is almost like magic, but distinctly different. One of the things I learned is called Haragei. It's a means of extending your sense, for the lack of a better word. That sense can tell me when I am in danger. That is what I sensed at dinner. It's a lot more than that, but that can wait for another time.
I KNEW there were twenty Death Eaters attacking the house. I KNEW they were split between front door and patio door. My military training also told me those were the most likely points of entry. That is why, after sending you to the trunk in the garage, I had Dobby cast the Impertible Charm on the inside of the front and rear walls, doors and windows, as well as on the common wall with the garage and kitchen. Between six months intense martial arts training and three months hand-to-hand combat and individual skills training, I've improved not only my magical defense, but also my non-magical defense. " Evan concluded.
"Evan, that was more than just defense against the dark arts! Twenty Death Eaters, Evan!" Hermione exclaimed. "That, Hermione, was me employing everything I've learnt so far: Bujinkai, military knowledge, and magic. Using Mu-Shin and Haragi together you are "in the moment". I was able to sense what was going to happen before it happened, and reacted to that knowledge immediately. It was like I knew what they were going to do before they did, and I had those split seconds to automatically respond. Not to forget that Dobby here helped me. Thank you Dobby, by the way."
"Hermione, Helen, Peter – it's late and I have to be at training at 5:30am. I would feel more comfortable if we all stay inside this trunk. I can cast the fidelius on it to make it more secure. Hermione, do you want to be secret keeper? Or maybe Winky?" Evan asked. "Can Winky be a secret keeper?" Hermione asked. "Yes, of course. The nice thing about it being Winky is that most wizards would never think of having an elf as a secret keeper." Evan replied. "Winky." Hermione called.
Winky appeared next to Hermione. "How can Winky bes helping Miss Grangy?" Winky asked. "Would you be willing to be my secret keeper, Winky?" Hermione replied. Winky looked at Evan, who said "It's up to you Winky. It has to be by your own free will." Winky looked back at Hermione. She had enjoyed watching over "Miss Grangy", who always treated her with respect. "Winky wills" she said finally. Evan cast the fidelius. Winky prepared the note to show those "in the need to know", and they went to sleep.
