With that, the crimson skull began to drift upward, its ghastly form fading like smoke.
Within seconds, it vanished into the moonlight and was gone without a trace, leaving only a faint scent of iron and decay behind.
Yet, the night was not done revealing its watchers.
From a far corner of the uppermost floor, a ripple of motion stirred again, and a second presence emerged.
The figure materialized from the wall itself, as though the shadows had birthed it in response to the first.
It was cloaked in a darkness so complete that it seemed to drink the surrounding light, and as the being watched the path where the red skull had vanished, its stance loose and almost amused.
The eyes beneath the hood glinted with quiet intelligence, and when they narrowed slightly, a chilling, distorted laugh escaped.
It was a whisper of mockery that was laced with a ghostly resonance.
"So… it begins again."
The voice was smooth yet unsettlingly cold.
