If she had continued to confront him, Dave wouldn't have felt much else, but when she cried, and it seemed like she was really heartbroken, Dave instantly felt like the worst person in the world. He immediately forgot all the reasons for their argument and just wanted to do whatever it took to stop her from crying.
"It's my fault, all my fault. I shouldn't have left home and made you worry..."
