"What the…" Maddie's voice trailed off, laced with disbelief as she stepped further out onto the porch, her hand shading her eyes against the afternoon sun. Her gaze was fixed on the two cars that had vanished around the curve at the end of the street—one tailing the other with reckless abandon.
"This is a residential area," she said sharply, the confusion in her voice rising into anger. "Why the hell would they be driving like maniacs?"
I didn't answer her. I couldn't. My brain was spinning too fast, my breath shallow. My heart had dropped to the pit of my stomach, coiled into a knot of dread. This wasn't supposed to happen here. Not in fucking Lakeview. Not in front of her.
"I… uh…" I stammered, stepping backward, my shoes crunching lightly against the gravel of her garden path. "I have to go. Now."
Maddie turned to face me, her brows furrowing. "Is everything alright—?"
