Chapter 142 - Treaty of Coruscant

A week later

After a long week of drafting the agreement and making some changes too, it was officially signed by all the current active Senators and named the Treaty of Coruscant.

Treaty Terms (Treaty of Coruscant

-Immediate and Permanent Cessation of Hostilities

All acts of war between the Veldari Imperium and the Galactic Republic were to cease immediately upon ratification. All fleets were ordered to stand down, disengage, and return to designated systems.

-Recognition of Defeat and Sovereignty

The Galactic Republic formally acknowledged its defeat in the conflict and recognized the territorial sovereignty of the Veldari Imperium over all previously contested regions.

-Ten-Year Stabilization Mandate

A ten-year stabilization period was established, during which Imperial forces would maintain a limited but strategic presence on Coruscant and in key Republic military hubs to ensure compliance, prevent insurrection, and oversee structural reforms. This presence was defined as supervisory, not occupational, and would gradually reduce pending compliance benchmarks.

-Territorial Concessions

The Republic relinquished:

All Hutt-controlled territories formerly under Republic protection.

Several Mid-Rim and Outer Rim colonies that had served as staging grounds for offensive campaigns.

Exclusive military transit rights in specific hyperspace corridors bordering Imperial space.

These systems were transferred under Imperial administrative oversight or granted autonomous protectorate status under Imperial security guarantees.

-Military Restrictions

The Republic agreed to:

Reduce its standing fleet to strictly defensive capacity.

Decommission all dreadnought-class capital ships beyond an agreed defensive threshold.

Dismantle deep-strike fleets and long-range offensive platforms.

Cease all covert intelligence operations within Imperial territory.

Submit fleet registries and shipyard production logs to joint oversight inspections for ten years.

-Demilitarization of Border Zones

A buffer region spanning multiple border systems was declared a demilitarized zone. No heavy warships, planetary siege platforms, or superweapons were permitted within this region by either power.

War Profiteer Accountability and Reparations

Reparations would not be paid by Republic citizens directly. Instead:

Assets of Thrace's collaborators, military contractors, and corrupt senators were seized.

Corporate entities that financially benefited from fabricated wartime expansion were dissolved or forcibly restructured.

Confiscated wealth was redistributed to rebuild devastated worlds on both sides of the conflict.

-Judicial Tribunals

A Joint Tribunal Authority was formed to prosecute:

War crimes.

Illegal weapons deployment.

Senate corruption tied to the fabricated casus belli.

Proceedings would be transparent and publicly broadcast to prevent political manipulation.

-Jedi Order Reformation Clause

The Jedi Order was placed under mandatory structural reform:

The Absolutist faction was formally dissolved.

All Jedi were required to undergo philosophical reeducation in balanced Force doctrine.

The Imperium, through Emperor Daimon, retained final oversight authority on doctrinal restructuring for the duration of the stabilization mandate.

Jedi participation in political office or military command roles was indefinitely suspended.

-Provisional Government Recognition

The Imperium formally recognized the Republic's Provisional Council led by Senators Bru, Geibend, and Hann as the legitimate governing authority until new elections were held within six months.

-Non-Annexation Guarantee

The Veldari Imperium formally renounced any claim to annex the Galactic Republic or interfere in its internal elections, provided treaty compliance remained intact.

-Force-Sensitive Accord

The Republic agreed to:

Register all Force-sensitive individuals discovered within its territory.

Offer them voluntary enrollment into the reformed Jedi Order or alternative Force institutions recognized by the Imperium.

Prohibit unsupervised militant Force sects from operating within Republic space.

-Ascendant Oversight Protocols

Imperial Ascendant task forces retained the right to intervene in Republic space if extremist Absolutist remnants or Sith-aligned insurgents attempted to reignite conflict.

All of these terms were now in effect, which received some support from the population. Although most were still wary of the treaty and what it entailed. Essentially, it made the Republic weaker on the galactic stage and gave the Imperium a much bigger presence.

The terms weren't bad as most of the planets were newly colonized worlds, though some were angry about the people who died liberating the slaves of the hutts. But there was nothing they could do as they had lost the war.

News stations were reporting that the Emperor showed them mercy with his demands. This resulted in his name and image becoming a trending search within the Republic. Many wanted to know about the Emperor and keep getting updates about their future.

Others were too busy trying to survive that they simply ignored what was happening and just carried on with their days. They didn't care who was in charge as they had other problems to deal with. Why worry about what's happening on Coruscant or any other planet when they themselves can't even make enough to buy food.

This was the opinions of billions of people whose lifestyle and social status declined because of the war.

While that was happening, the Provisional government sought to reward heroes of the who fought valiantly despite their defeat. This was due to the morale of the Republic being low among both the civilian population and military members.

And it was known throughout history by thousands of dead civilizations that if military morale was low during a time of peace, it was only a matter of time until something drastic happened.

The Senators wanted to avoid this, so they selected a bunch of people who proved themselves during the war and were recommended by other officers.

A few days later

Transport ships carrying hundreds of Republic soldiers had arrived on Coruscant. Among these soldiers was the young Sergeant Lageth King.

He stepped off the transport onto the landing pad, squinting his eyes at Coruscant's artificial sunlight. Around him, other soldiers disembarked with the same confused expressions. None of them knew why they'd been summoned to the capital. Some speculated they were being reassigned since the war was over. Others worried they were being discharged without benefits.

Around them, Empyrean Guards and Republic soldiers stood guard. Some were talking to each other, mainly out of curiosity about each other's differences.

"Sergeant King?" A Republic officer approached with a datapad. "Follow me, please."

King exchanged glances with Private Kellick, who'd somehow survived the Nar Haaska engagement. "Am I in trouble, sir?"

"Quite the opposite." The officer led them through the spaceport toward a military speeder. "You're being recognized for your service."

"Recognized?" King's stomach dropped. Recognition meant ceremonies; Ceremonies meant standing in front of crowds; and standing in front of crowds meant opportunities to embarrass himself. "Sir, I think there's been a mistake. I didn't really do anything special."

"According to your commanding officers, you held a strategic position against overwhelming Imperial forces for three hours longer than projections indicated. That bought time for civilian evacuations." The officer gestured to the speeder. "Get in." He hesitantly hopped in the passenger seat.

The ride through Coruscant was surreal. The planet looked different than the holovids he'd seen growing up. Sections of the city bore scars from the brief battle and subsequent riots. But reconstruction was already underway.

'Imperial soldiers, on Coruscant?' King still couldn't wrap his head around it.

They arrived at the Senate building where dozens of other soldiers were gathering. Some wore dress uniforms with medals already pinned on their chests. Others, like King, wore standard fatigues that had seen better days.

"Form up in the main hall," the officer instructed. "The ceremony begins in one hour." was all he said as he turned around and left.

King found himself standing next to a tall Zabrak woman whose uniform indicated she was a naval officer. "Do you know what this is about?" he asked.

"Medals ceremony," she replied. "Provisional government's trying to boost morale. Show the people that even though we lost, our soldiers fought with honor." She glanced at him. "What'd you do to get invited?"

"Honestly? Got lucky. Very, very lucky." King had a flashback of the canyon battle where he came face to face with death. "I fell down a hill and accidentally knocked out an Imperial clone. Then artillery hit at exactly the right moment. My squad thought I planned it."

The Zabrak woman laughed. "I crashed my fighter into an Imperial cruiser's bridge after my engines failed. They're calling it a 'heroic sacrifice maneuver.' I was just trying not to die."

"So we're both frauds," King said.

"The best kind of heroes," she agreed.

As she said that, Republic guards and Empyrean Guards entered the room by the dozens. "Room, attention!" one of them called out. Everybody in the room snapped to attention, confused on who was entering.

Though who walked in next surprised everybody. It was the Emperor himself.

King couldn't believe it. The massive figure of Emperor Daimon followed by his guards strode into the hall. Behind him walked Senator Bru and several other members of the Provisional Council, but nobody was looking at them. Every eye in the room was fixed on the Emperor.

King had seen holos of Daimon before, but they hadn't prepared him for the reality. The Emperor stood at least ten feet tall. But what struck King most wasn't his size; it was the way he moved. He had seen how some arrogant commanders and soldiers walked during the war like they had something to prove. Yet the Emperor walked like a man who had nothing to prove because everyone already knew what he was capable of.

"At ease," Daimon said. The soldiers relaxed their postures, though the tension in the room remained palpable. Many of these men and women had fought against Imperial forces. Some had lost friends to Imperial weapons. And now they stood in the same room as the being who had defeated their entire Republic.

Senator Bru stepped forward, clearing his throat. "Soldiers of the Republic, you have been gathered here today to receive recognition for your service during the recent conflict. Despite the outcome of the war, each of you demonstrated courage, skill, and dedication to your duty. The Provisional Council believes it is important to honor that service."

He gestured to Daimon. "Emperor Daimon has requested to personally present these commendations. While this may seem unusual given the circumstances, the Emperor wished to demonstrate that bravery in service of one's nation deserves respect, regardless of which side one fought for."

Daimon stepped forward. "I know many of you are confused about why I'm here. Some of you probably hate me. Others fear me. Both reactions are understandable." He paused, his gaze sweeping across the assembled soldiers. "But I want you to understand something. You were not my enemies. Chancellor Thrace was my enemy. The corrupt officials who fabricated this war were my enemies. You? You were soldiers following orders, fighting for what you believed was right."

King couldn't believe what he was hearing. The words that the Emperor were saying, sounded genuine.

"During this war, I witnessed countless acts of bravery from Republic forces. Soldiers who held impossible positions. Commanders who chose to save their crews rather than die for a lost cause. People who showed mercy when they could have chosen cruelty." Daimon's expression softened slightly. "That kind of courage deserves recognition, even from the side that defeated you."

The Zabrak woman next to King whispered, "Is he actually praising us?"

"I think so," King whispered back.

Senator Bru began reading names from a datapad. One by one, soldiers stepped forward to receive their commendations. Some received medals for valor in combat. Others were recognized for humanitarian efforts during evacuations.

Each recipient stood before Daimon as he personally pinned the medal to their chest and offered a few words of encouragement or acknowledgment.

When King's name was called, his legs almost gave out. He walked forward on autopilot, acutely aware that every eye in the room was watching him. Up close, the Emperor was even more imposing, yet his expression held no malice.

"Sergeant Lageth King," Senator Bru called next.

"Held defensive position Seven-Alpha against Imperial clone forces for three hours, enabling the evacuation of two thousand civilians from the combat zone." Daimon said as he looked down at King. "Your commanding officer noted that your actions were 'tactically brilliant and executed with precision under extreme pressure.'"

King opened his mouth to confess that it had all been dumb luck, but Daimon continued before he could speak.

"I've read the after-action reports, Sergeant. I know what really happened. You improvised, adapted, and survived against overwhelming odds. That's not luck, that's resourcefulness. Some of the best military victories in history happened because someone refused to give up even when the situation seemed hopeless."

He pinned the medal to King's chest, a bronze star with twin blaster rifles crossed behind it. "The Republic needs soldiers like you in the years ahead. Not because you're perfect, but because you understand that survival sometimes matters more than glory."

"Thank you, Sir," King said as he walked back to his spot. While he was a little happy, he had a feeling that his life was still not going to be easy, even after he left the military.

'I just want to be lazy and do nothing. Is that too much to ask for?' he said in his head. Now he was a firm believer that some god was out there playing tricks on him. Nothing would make him change his mind now after all of this. Who decided to make him the luckiest person in the galaxy?
