Chapter 7 - Text imagination: Preservation

Warning: Suicide and bad thoughts!

A man stood silently watching the stars in the sky with a melancholic look.

Today was the last day.

"The sky looks beautiful. If only the people were the same."

He looked silently at the nearby buildings that were colouring the gray world.

He even saw a mother playing happily with their child in the nearby hotel.

*Sigh.*

He looked down towards the streets filled with cars.

The wind felt especially nice this night.

"Oh, I...did I forget something? Ah, right."

The man turned on his phone. The bright screen illuminating his recently shaved face.

He typed away quickly and turned off his phone with slightly shaky hands.

"I don't think I'll need this?"

He placed his phone next to him and looked towards the stars once again.

"I guess I'm going a little early. I hope you won't mind."

He chuckled and let his body fall.

The wind felt nice tonight.

*********

"Hey, how's your day going?"

A young man with blonde hair asked.

"Well enough.... Although I can't say the same for him."

A woman roughly in her late twenties responded looking depressed.

The blond man flinched and quickly asked. He had forgotten what happens this time of year.

"Are you alright?"

It had become a pattern, when that day approached her emotions dulled and her coworkers occasionally asked meaningless questions.

She shook her head.

It had already been five years since he left.

She knew this but there was a reason why she always thought about him.

"I still can't get over it. I don't understand. I don't know how to."

His anniversary... "their" anniversary was coming up.

The young man stared outside for a while before shaking his head.

"Have you tried therapy?" He asked.

"Yup, unfortunately I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall, so I've stopped. Hahaha…"

The two chuckled lightly to alleviate their discomfort and the young man looked at his phone.

"Break's almost over. Let's continue work. Senior~"

*Tap.*

The woman nodded, weakly punching the young man as retaliation.

*****

Work was finally over so now it was time to go home.

"Huh, I feel bored. Should I drive you home?"

The woman asked looking at a relatively young girl.

"Ah, ehm that would be nice."

'How cute. Reminds me of myself when I was younger.'

A timid girl that could barely talk to someone older than them.

The two walked towards a car and the older woman opened the door and entered.

"Uhm, what was your name again?"

"Amelia."

Names were hard to remember, however there were some people whose name was worth remembering.

"Amelia… airhead, awkward… got it."

Amelia flinched and her mouth opened, however perhaps she was too shocked because no words came out.

"Are you getting in?"

"Ah, yeah…"

She got in the car and told the woman her address.

"So, how is work?"

Typical chatter that didn't mean much.

"It's going well so far. The people are nice and work isn't too difficult."

The woman driving slowed down until a red light appeared.

"That's good, what made you come here?"

The green light appeared.

"Oh, I have a younger brother at home. I want to be able to be a good role model for him. How about you?"

The driving continued in silence for a while before the woman answered.

"A friend introduced me. Now I've almost worked here longer than him…."

Amelia tilted her head slightly.

*Ding!*

"And here we are."

"Right! What's your name?"

"It's Maria."

Amelia nodded and waved goodbye.

"Thanks for driving me home Maria!"

Maria waved back and went back to driving.

"There goes another day."

Maria muttered quietly as she went to the bathroom to brush her teeth.

*Gurgle.*

*Ptu!*

Would it be better to throw up? Would that distract her enough to make her forget? Would it lessen the pain?

Maria sat down on a couch and turned on the tv.

All the new tv shows were dull and predictable, and she wouldn't dare stain the ones she enjoyed in the past.

It was time for bed.

"Can't forget to ask for my day off."

******

The beautiful night sky was filled with stars.

Those stars filled the galaxy and every now and then new stars were born.

Maria could never reach the stars.

*****

*Beep! Beep! Be- slam!*

"Oh shut it."

Maria stayed in bed.

The world was filled with light and sound.

Why did she even get out of bed? What drove her to do such an act? What allowed her to forget!? Why does she forget!? Why can't she forget?!

The pillow was filled with tears.

She ate something.

She turned on the tv.

She went to bed.

*Ding!*

"Fuck, not again."

It was 12:00 A.M. The day of their anniversary.

[Calendar: To seven years!]

"Already five years huh...."

*Ding!*

There was another notification.

"What?"

Maria clicked on the notification.

It was an unknown number and it attached a document.

[Goodbye]

*Tap.*

["Hey, not sure if you'll even get this, however, I'm hoping you do."]

Constantly unsure in practically everything.

["I'll make this quick, since I'm freezing. Remember that old restaurant where we first met? I asked the owner to store a box for me. Or was it a briefcase?"]

There was once a time when they didn't know each other.

Simply a boy and girl who met by coincidence.

["Either way, I've been visiting that place for a while and set up a reservation for the entire day. Well then, farewell. May we meet again in the sky."]

"Huh?"

Maria cried silently as she got out of bed.

She had somewhere to go.

******

They were complete opposites.

She was always cheerful and he always seemed relaxed.

"Hey, Sil."

But after some time.

"....Yeah?"

She came to like that side of him.

"Wanna be my boyfriend?"

...

"W-what?"

They always tried new things and everything was going well.

However, Maria never knew about the deepest part of him.

*******

*Skirr!*

The car stopped abruptly and Maria quickly saw someone standing outside of an old japanese style restaurant.

"So she really did come at 1 a.m. Your name is Maria, correct?"

It was a middle aged man with an apron.

"Yes."

Maria answered as calmly as she could muster.

"Come in, I'll have your order ready in a few minutes."

Maria nervously followed the man and sat down at a table with a nameplate with her name on it.

She could only wait nervously until her food arrived.

But eventually it was served along with a box.

"Enjoy your meal."

"Thanks…"

What was inside of the box?

Maria couldn't hold herself back and opened the box immediately.

Inside was a piece of paper.

It was like a treasure hunt, would he send her to Alaska next?

Ignoring the fleeting thought, Maria started reading.

["I'm sorry for leaving without notice. I'll tell you everything, from the beginning."]

She always wondered why he left. Especially why he did so without saying anything to anyone.

["I grew up in an abusive household. My parents often hit me and my brother always blamed everything on me".]

["Eventually I got an apartment away from my parents, but they always made sure I was "educated", if you know what I mean. I was never safe anywhere".]

["I even tried to end it, however, that obviously failed. I was working part time when I met you. I always thought you were pretty, however, I never told you until you asked for me to be your boyfriend".]

"I already knew dummy…"

["That was the most precious time in my life. But my brother and parents continued to bother me and I got fired from my job. Eventually I realized what I wanted."]

Maria's eyes widened as she continued reading.

["I wanted to be with you, forever. But by doing that I would also bring along my family. You would see what I didn't want you to see. I didn't want to be a burden. So I left."]

"That's why?!"

Maria could only scream. She couldn't do anything else.

"After everything! It was because of your family situation!? You could've moved! We could've left the country!"

She didn't know what kind of answer she wanted, however, this was not what she wanted!

"Ugh."

Holding back tears, she turned the paper and there was nothing!

She wanted to burst out but restrained herself, eventually looking deeper into the box.

There was a book.

"What?"

A book filled with hundreds of pictures.

And on the first page something was written.

["I'm sorry that I couldn't find anything better. But here it is. My final goodbye."]

And on the final page.

["Let's meet again one day. When you've grown wiser you can tell me everything that has happened. Please live for my sake as well."]

"Selfish."

He was selfish, however, she didn't dislike that.

She started eating slowly, then the food was gone.

The food tasted bitter.
