A month had passed since the capture of the Twin Mountains.
The victory had changed the course of the war.
What had once seemed like an impossible dream had become reality. The united forces of Dan, Tecka, the Elves, and the Dwarves continued to push deeper into the territories once controlled by the Demons.
One victory followed another.
The Demonic Beasts that had once overwhelmed entire armies were now being driven back.
The Light Cannons had become a symbol of hope.
New weapons arrived almost every week.
More soldiers joined the expeditionary army.
And with every victory, the army grew larger.
Yet nobody had forgotten the encounter with Rio.
That single encounter had changed the way the commanders viewed the Demons.
Before Rio appeared, many believed the Demons were simply powerful creatures that could be defeated with enough soldiers and sufficient preparation.
Rio had shattered that belief.
He had stood against Lucian and Irene while barely making an effort.
He had survived their strongest attacks.
And then he had simply walked away.
Worse still, something had frightened even him.
Whatever that thing was, it remained somewhere beyond the old Border.
For months, however, neither Rio nor the mysterious threat had appeared.
The army continued advancing.
And now they had reached the Fort of Ismal.
The Ruins of Ismal
The Fort of Ismal had once been one of the greatest defensive structures on the continent.
Its enormous walls had protected the old Border for generations.
Its gates had been reinforced with Melarium and the defensive measure from Tecka.
Thousands of soldiers and adventurers had once lived within its walls.
Now...
It was barely recognizable.
The towers had collapsed.
The walls were cracked.
The gates lay broken across the ground.
Blackened vegetation grew through the stone.
And the remains of Demonic Beasts were scattered throughout the fort.
It took nearly five days for the soldiers to clear the bodies.
The smell alone was enough to make even experienced soldiers sick.
But once the work was finished, the army began restoring the fort.
The old defensive walls were repaired.
New Light Cannons were installed.
Barracks were rebuilt.
Supplies were brought in.
The Fort of Ismal once again began to resemble a military stronghold.
But the army knew this was only temporary.
Beyond Ismal stood the Old Border.
And beyond that...
Lay the lands that had been lost during the great Demonic invasion.
The next morning, the army would march.
The Scout Party
Before the main army advanced, a small scout party was formed.
Among them were two people who normally had no reason to perform such a task themselves.
Lucian.
And Irene.
Both were commanders.
Both had soldiers who could perform reconnaissance.
But they wanted to see the land personally.
There were too many unanswered questions.
Why had the Demons disappeared?
Where had Rio gone?
What had frightened the Demonic Beasts?
And what remained beyond the Old Border?
The answers could not be found by simply reading reports.
They had to see the land themselves.
The group left the Fort of Ismal early in the morning.
They carried only essential equipment.
No heavy armor.
No large weapons.
No unnecessary supplies.
They were traveling light.
Irene walked near the front.
Lucian walked beside her.
For a while, neither spoke.
Lucian noticed something unusual.
Irene looked nervous.
Not afraid.
Something deeper.
He understood why.
Beyond this land lay the place where Henry Tecka had met his fate.
For years, Irene had tried to avoid coming here.
Now she was willingly walking toward it.
"Are you all right?" Lucian finally asked.
Irene looked at him.
"I'm fine."
Lucian didn't believe her.
But he didn't press her.
Instead, he continued walking.
The Silent Grassland
The first part of their journey was surprisingly peaceful.
A vast grassland stretched before them.
The wind moved through the tall grass like waves across an ocean.
The scouts moved quickly.
There were no Demonic Beasts.
No roars.
No strange sounds.
No traces of Demonic Mana.
It was almost beautiful.
But that beauty made Lucian uncomfortable.
He had spent months fighting the Demons.
He had learned to recognize their presence.
The silence itself felt unnatural.
Eventually, they reached the edge of the forest.
The Demonic Forest.
Lucian stopped.
He remembered how the dark forest was described by the survivors.
Back then, the forest had been drowned in darkness.
Demonic Miasma had covered the ground.
The trees had withered.
The air had felt poisonous.
But now...
There was something different.
The forest was still dead.
The trees were bare.
Their branches twisted toward the sky.
But the Demonic Miasma was gone.
Lucian narrowed his eyes.
"Where are they?"
One of the soldiers whispered.
Nobody answered.
There wasn't a single Demonic Beast in sight.
Not even an insect.
The forest was completely silent.
Irene looked around.
"This isn't normal."
Lucian nodded.
"It isn't."
They moved cautiously into the forest.
After walking for several minutes, Lucian stopped.
He turned toward one of the soldiers.
"Return to Ismal."
The soldier looked surprised.
"Sir?"
"Tell them to prepare the army."
Lucian looked deeper into the forest.
"Something is wrong."
The soldier saluted and immediately began running back.
The remaining scouts continued forward.
The Lake
They walked for several more minutes.
Then the trees suddenly became thinner.
A strange blue light appeared between them.
The scouts stepped forward.
And stopped.
Before them was an enormous lake.
Nobody spoke.
The lake stretched across what had once been the heart of the forest.
Its surface was perfectly still.
Its water reflected the sky.
Lucian stared at it.
"This wasn't here.", Irene said.
She stepped forward slowly.
Her expression changed.
The lake had formed in the exact place where the Manan Manor had once stood.
Lucian remembered the stories.
The blue pillar of light.
The explosion.
The destruction.
Henry.
Irene's husband.
The manor had been completely erased.
The enormous blast had created a crater.
And eventually, water had filled it.
The result was this lake.
A beautiful lake born from destruction.
Irene stood at its edge.
For years, she had held onto the smallest possibility.
Perhaps Henry had survived.
Perhaps there had been something left behind.
Perhaps one day...
She would find him.
But there was nothing.
No ruins.
No remains.
No trace of the manor.
Nothing.
Only water.
Her final hope disappeared.
Lucian stood silently beside her.
He knew there were no words that could repair what she had lost.
So he said nothing.
The Grave
The scouts searched the surrounding area.
They found no Demonic presence.
No hidden soldiers.
No monsters.
No traces of Rio.
Nothing.
The Old Border was reconstructed soon afterward.
But the army did not stop there.
A second defensive line was planned.
The commanders had learned their lesson.
One wall was never enough.
A small group of soldiers was dispatched toward the lake to mark the land where another defensive structure would eventually be built.
The war might be ending.
But they would not make the same mistake twice.
Irene remained behind.
She stood beside the lake long after the others had left.
Eventually, she found a quiet place overlooking the water.
There, she built a small grave.
There was no body.
No remains.
Only a name.
Henry Tecka.
She sat beside it.
The moon slowly climbed into the sky.
Its pale light reflected across the still water.
For the first time in years, Irene allowed herself to grieve.
She removed the pendant around her neck.
The pendant Henry had given her.
She held it tightly.
Her fingers trembled.
"I came back."
Her voice was barely audible.
"I finally came back."
The wind moved gently through her hair.
She stared across the lake.
"This is where you disappeared."
Her eyes became wet.
"I thought..."
She stopped.
There was no need to finish the sentence.
A single tear slipped down her cheek.
It fell onto the ground beside the grave.
For a long time, she simply sat there.
The woman who had fought Demons without fear finally allowed herself one moment of weakness.
And the lake remained silent.
The End of the War?
The army began rebuilding.
The lands around Ismal were secured.
The old Border was restored.
The Demonic Forest remained strangely quiet.
No Demonic Beasts appeared.
No Demons emerged.
No Demonic Miasma returned.
For the first time in generations, the people began to believe that the war might finally be over.
Messages were sent to the capital.
The Old Border has been recovered.
The news spread across the kingdoms.
People celebrated.
Church bells rang.
Markets filled with laughter.
Families began preparing to return to lands that had been abandoned for generations.
The war that had consumed their lives seemed to be approaching its end.
But...
There was something nobody understood.
Why had the Demons disappeared?
Why had Rio fled?
What had frightened the Demonic Beasts?
And why had the entire Demonic Forest suddenly become silent?
That night, Lucian stood on the restored walls of Ismal.
He looked toward the forest.
The moon illuminated the distant trees.
Everything was still.
Too still.
A cold wind passed through the fortress.
Lucian suddenly shivered.
He looked around.
The soldiers nearby had also stopped talking.
One by one, they felt it.
A strange chill.
Not the cold of the night.
Something else.
Something that seemed to come from deep beneath the earth.
Lucian tightened his grip on his sword.
His Light Mana stirred instinctively.
For a moment, he thought he heard something.
A sound.
Far away.
Deep within the forest.
Thump.
He froze.
Another.
Thump.
Like a heartbeat.
Lucian stared into the darkness.
Nothing moved.
Then the sound stopped.
The wind returned.
The soldiers slowly relaxed.
But Lucian did not.
He continued staring toward the forest.
The war had not ended.
Somewhere beyond the Old Border, something was waiting.
And whatever had caused Rio to flee...
had finally begun to awaken.
