Chapter 29 - Camping To The Night

He glanced from left to right, and once he confirmed the surroundings were safe, he put the Pathfinder into a waiting position and had it on mobile ghoul radar. Upon seeing the pathfinder follow his order, Quagmire was delighted that such a thing was possible.

A few days had already passed, and he was really thankful that he was able to find such a function. As the first day he camped once again in the open forest, he was ambushed numerous times by ghouls.

Thankfully, after the crimson night, the ghouls were much easier to deal with, but a lot of them were crafty.

It also became much easier now that he possessed firearms and a Mark Two variable silencer. So much noise was reduced, and the firing now only traveled a few dozen meters out. This was really a gigantic boost, as in the past it would reach so far it might bring the entire nation onto him.

With that in mind, he rested his hands on his pistol as if trying to pet it, knowing full well he could rely on the pistol if things pushed came to shove. It was such a good thing to have a reliable partner.

He was proud and delighted, yes, but none of those things mattered in the current situation; what mattered was the need to secure the surroundings. With that in mind, he pushed the things bothering him to the back of his mind and started to think up a strategy. He thought long and hard but ended up using the ghoul radar.

He moved closer to the pathfinder and brought up his hands, after which a window appeared and he started typing. He could mentally do it, but he wanted to practice it using his hands as he would be required to do so in the future. Especially since other people could use it, he cannot do it through the system window but through the machine's window.

Fortunately, he was now getting used to it, including the machine's parameters—technology that was foreign to him. It was now normal to him, and so he was rapidly being able to use it.

After all, there was no point in dwelling on old things. One must be able to change with the times after all, and that was in the form of technology. It would be a bad presentation for the emperor if it was not.

His fingers danced on the keyboard as if they were dancing in a waltz, which was precise and proper, even though it was a bit slow. Like anciently slow, he was getting the hang of it; the better, the faster he would be able to type and make commands.

Furthermore, he believed that this would be important in the future as he thought that there would come a time when he would use his mind to do and solve commands in his head, all the while managing logistics and other things in the window panel.

After he pressed his desired function and confirmed it, the pathfinder once again sent out a pulse into the surrounding area at a three-hundred-sixty-degree angle. He felt his skin vibrate as the waves came back to the instrument. There, he saw the entire map around him with red dots surrounding it; it ranged from hundreds to dozens of ghouls and into isolated cases.

He stared at the screen and saw that there were a few isolated ghouls around him, but they were a few kilometers out, and the largest and most numerous ones were too far for him to care. Unless an explosion came and echoed through the area, he would be relatively safe.

With that in mind, he brought out his tent and started to assemble it. From time to time, he moved closer to the pathfinder and checked once again. The ghouls moved a few meters, but they mostly remained the same. They were too far from him.

Now feeling a bit more tired, he brought out his sleeping bag and entered it. He lay down with his pistol at his side and started to drift off into the wonderland of ultimate dreams in this world.

There he saw his silhouette. He could not make out the details, but he could tell from the shadow. The shadow stared at him and smiled, then turned back once more. It started to move, and after a few moments, the shadow was now far. Unfortunately, that was when the dream ended.

Quagmire woke up with tears on his cheeks. Beside him was an alarm that was ringing. It was the radar's alarm that there were ghouls nearby. Realizing the situation, he grabbed hold of the pistol from his side and got out of the sleeping bag.

With the pistol firmly in his hands, he moved closer to the radar and looked closely at the monitor. There were approximately a dozen ghouls near him. Thus knowing that, he looked in each direction. There, he saw that they were coming from a single direction. It also seemed that there were more coming into the range of the radar.

Realizing the current situation he was in, he could not help but curse the night away, as it disrupted his sweet sleep. Now he would be all groggy in the morning. With a slight annoyance in his expression, he brought his pistol closer to his face.

Thankfully, it was now midnight, and the moon gave clear illumination to the surroundings. So, he aimed his pistol, and the eagle's eye activated almost automatically, and he was able to adjust it to his desired magnification.

When he saw the ghoul, he adjusted his body and aim, then pulled the trigger. The shot echoed a few dozen meters; the shot hit the head of the ghoul, and a rose blossomed in the middle of the night. The ghoul fell to the ground lifelessly.

Unfortunately for him, the other ghouls seemed to get enraged and started to charge at him with ferocious speed.
