The streets were wide and clean, paved with smooth, interlocking stones. The people moved with a purpose, a quiet sense of confidence and prosperity. Although there were many foreigners entering and leaving, one could easily distinguish the locals from their stylish and practical clothes.
Then, a low rumble echoed down the street. It was the sound of a "horseless" carriage, a boxy, black vehicle that resembled an early 20th-century car. It moved on its own, without any beasts of burden, its wheels turning smoothly on the paved road. The Prince's eyes widened to the size of saucers.
"By the gods, what sorcery is this?" he exclaimed, pointing a trembling finger at the car. "A carriage that moves on its own? It's a ghost carriage! Where is the horse?"
