Chapter 9 - The Blind Chase

The light above resembled a full moon buried beneath ice, distant and pale, yet unwavering. Like something that had been trapped behind layers of ice still trying to shine through to a world that had long since forgotten warmth.

Elias stared upward at the ceiling of the library.

His vision swam slightly, unfocused at the edges, yet the circular light above him remained strangely clear. It blurred, and then sharpened, as though his mind kept drifting in and out of consciousness.

Slowly and weakly, he lifted one hand toward it.

His fingers trembled.

For a moment, he remembered the question he had asked the system earlier.

"Is that where I need to go?"

The memory lingered quietly in his mind.

For a moment, Elias remembered exactly how he had felt back then.

Tired. Broken.

The endless cold, the silence, the fear of what waited around every corner. As he stared upward now, there was a strange peace settling over him. His breathing slowed. The pain dulled, and the light almost felt warm.

And he began to think, perhaps it would be alright to just simply stop, and take some rest –

[ Host vitals dropping. ]

The warning cut through the haze like a blade.

Pain surged through him immediately after. Reality snapped into focus. The monster was still there.

Teeth tore into his shoulder, scraping against bone as it gorged on his flesh. Blood soaked through his clothes.

He tried to push it away, but its weight was unbearable.

Its limbs were too long, too wrong, pinning him down as the creature bent towards him with frantic, starving movements. The smell alone made him gag – damp rot mixed with blood and something sickeningly sweet beneath it all.

Wet snarling sounds filled the library while all Elias could do was scream with pain.

The closer the monster pressed against him, the more reality itself seemed to distort around its body. Elias felt his stomach twist violently as if his organs were trying to recoil from the creature's mere presence. His vision warped at the edges, and a sharp ringing filled his ears.

His thoughts became slippery and difficult to hold onto. For brief moments, he couldn't tell whether the thing that was clawing into him was truly there or if his mind was playing tricks on him.

[ Ambient dissonance levels critically high. The Sigil of Vitality has been activated. ]

The dissonance made his stomach heave, but before the nausea could fully take over, the sigil flared.

A burst of burning light erupted through his veins.

The monster recoiled instantly.

It let out a horrific shriek and threw itself backward, clutching at its own face as smoke rose faintly from its mouth.

Parts of the sagging flesh around its jaw seemed to melt away under the heat, revealing something beneath that momentarily looked almost human.

The thing staggered violently, groaning in confusion and pain.

And for one impossible second, Elias saw it.

Something trapped inside.

Like something deep within the creature was clawing upward beneath the ruined flesh, trying desperately to break free.

Its remaining intact eye locked onto him.

It wasn't hungry. It was terrified. It was pleading.

Elias felt it immediately.

A pull.

A silent call reaching towards him from behind the monster's ruined face.

And Elias suddenly understood something terrifying.

If he hesitated, even for a second, he would die trying to understand.

This place did not reward sympathy. It barely even rewarded survival.

His body made the decision before his mind fully caught up to it.

By now, the sigil had almost finished healing him. The burning sensation beneath his skin had dulled into a lingering ache. But he had enough strength for survival to take over completely.

He forced himself upright.

RUN.

That was the only thing left.

Elias grabbed his sword that had fallen down, the other still on his back, and turned around, nearly slipping on scattered books as he bolted through the shelves.

Behind him, the monster shrieked again.

Then came the sound of pursuit.

The library erupted into chaos.

Bookshelves crashed apart one after another as the creature barreled through them instead of around them. Wood splintered violently behind Elias as books exploded into the air.

Elias ran blindly through the narrow aisles.

The shelves towered over him on both sides, trapping him within suffocating corridors barely wide enough for one person. Dust and torn pages filled the air around him, making it harder for him to breathe with every passing second.

Another crash, closer this time.

A bookshelf right behind him folded inward with a deafening crack as the creature smashed straight through it. Its elongated arm was mere inches from Elias' back.

He swerved sharply.

Books slid beneath his feet.

His shoulder slammed against a shelf hard enough to send pain through his arm, but he kept running.

The sigil burned inside him continuously now.

Every movement felt stolen from exhaustion his body no longer had the strength to carry. His limbs trembled violently beneath the adrenaline, yet terror kept dragging him forward.

The aisles tightened further ahead.

Too narrow. Too cluttered.

He glanced back.

The creature's twisted form squeezed itself violently through the collapsing aisles. Its bones cracked audibly as it forced its massive frame through spaces too small to contain.

Its ruined mouth hung partially open and strands of dark saliva stretched between broken teeth, while its eye, a beautiful and vibrant blue, locked onto him with frantic intensity.

Elias turned forward again.

Dead end.

His stomach dropped instantly.

The shelves ahead had collapsed completely, blocking the path with shattered wood and hundreds of scattered books.

"Fuck…"

He skidded to a stop.

There was no space to climb over nor to move the shelves.

Behind him, the monster was closing in with terrifying speed.

Elias looked sideways.

Just enough room.

Without hesitating, he shoved himself directly into it.

Books slammed against his face and shoulders as he forced his body through the packed shelf, knocking the books down while wood scraped painfully against his arms and ribs.

Then the entire structure exploded apart.

The monster crashed into it from behind with enough force to send fragments flying through the air.

Elias hit the ground hard on the other side and immediately crawled forward.

Something seized his ankle.

He cried out sharply.

The creature's hand wrapped around his leg as its claws dug through his cloth and skin.

Elias' vision blurred for a split second as he was violently dragged backward across the floor. Dust, torn pages, and splintered wood scraped against his skin while the monster pulled him closer.

He twisted violently.

Its ruined face lunged closer.

Instinct took over. Elias grabbed one of the swords and hurled it.

The blade spun through the air and buried itself directly into the creature's eye.

For a second, the entire library fell silent, contrasting the chaos from just a moment ago.

The creature opened its mouth, screaming in agony.

Then, it threw him violently through the air.

Elias slammed into a nearby shelf hard enough to crack the wood behind him before collapsing onto the floor in a heap of scattered books. Pain exploded through his ribs and shoulders, as he spat out blood onto the wood beneath him.

But the monster had made a mistake.

One eye was gone entirely now. The other, the blue one, hung uselessly from torn flesh, dangling against its cheek.

It couldn't see anymore.

The realization struck Elias almost immediately.

The monster now moved erratically. It turned sharply towards one aisle before slamming directly into the shelves there, roaring in frustration as books collapsed over its massive frame.

Elias forced himself upright.

Run. NOW.

He staggered forward immediately, nearly tripping over the fallen books as he sprinted deeper into the library. Behind him, the monster shrieked again. The sound was raw and furious enough to vibrate through the shelves themselves.

Then Elias noticed: the monster had stopped crashing through shelves at random.

It stood motionless for a heartbeat, with its head titled. And when a book fell down onto the floor, the monster's head snapped towards the sound with terrifying precision.

"It can't see anymore.", Elias thought to himself.

But it could hear. Perfectly.

Elias clamped his mouth shut and forced his next step into silence.

Every breath Elias took felt too loud. Every footstep echoed too sharply against the stone floor.

He veered left between two tightly packed shelves. His shoulders clipped the edge of one hard enough to send another cascade of books crashing onto the floor.

The noise echoed loudly.

Behind, the monster heard him.

"Oh, come on – "

Elias pushed himself harder.

His chest burned with every inhale. The sigil still pulsed weakly beneath his skin, draining whatever little energy remained in his body just to keep him functioning. His legs trembled violently as exhaustion built up faster than adrenaline could suppress it.

The library no longer felt like a room. It felt alive. Like a labyrinth tightening around him.

Every turn looked identical.

Every aisle narrowed farther ahead.

And somewhere behind him, something huge kept crashing through the dark searching for him by sound alone.

Elias grabbed a loose book from a nearby shelf and hurled it hard across the library.

The impact echoed far to the left.

Immediately, the monster lunged towards it.

Wood exploded and shelves collapsed.

Elias didn't wait to confirm whether it worked.

He sprinted the opposite direction.

Another intersection. Another turn.

And finally… a wooden door.

Relief surged through him so suddenly it almost made his knees buckle.

"There!"

He pushed harder.

Behind him, the creature had stopped moving.

It was listening again.

The monster shrieked as it heard the sound of Elias' footsteps, and charged directly towards him.

The entire aisle shook violently as the creature smashed straight through the shelves instead of navigating around them.

Elias grabbed another book and threw it sideways.

The impact echoed sharply against distant shelves.

The creature's head snapped toward the sound, and then stopped.

Its ruined face tilted, listening not to the echo but to something else.

The silence after.

The absence of footsteps.

The lack of breathing in that direction.

It didn't move. Instead, its head slowly turned back, tracking the shallow, ragged breaths Elias couldn't quite suppress.

The creature hesitated. Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Elias reached the door and threw himself through it, slamming it shut behind him with every ounce of strength he had left.

The wood shuddered violently beneath his hands.

He staggered backward, breathing hard, before collapsing against the base of the door itself. His chest rose and fell in painful, uneven breaths.

"…Still… alive…"

Barely.

For one second, the silence felt real.

Then, something hit the other side. Not the door, but the wall beside it.

A deafening crash exploded through the corridor.

Before Elias could even react, the wall broke and the monster burst through.

Splintered wood and shattered stone rained down as the creature launched itself straight through the partition, and slammed violently into the floor directly in front of him.

The impact cracked the stone.

The creature skidded across the corridor on all fours, its claws screeching against the ground as it struggled to stabilize itself.

Elias didn't hesitate.

The moment the monster landed, he scrambled sideways and bolted towards the right corridor without even looking back.

Behind him, the creature let out a furious growl.

Its head snapped wildly from side to side, listening and searching.

Though the adrenaline proved to be an obstacle, Elias forced himself to move quieter this time. Every footstep felt dangerously loud against the stone floor.

The corridor twisted sharply ahead.

The air here felt tighter somehow, more suffocating than the library.

Behind him came the sound of claws dragging across the floor.

Closer.

The monster had heard him again.

A low growl echoed through the corridor.

Elias' lungs burned. His legs felt unstable now, and the sigil pulsed weakly beneath his skin.

Still, he ran.

Another corner. Another turn.

The monster crashed through the wall behind him instead of following the corridor properly.

"Are you fucking serious?!"

Elias nearly slipped as fragments scattered across the floor.

The growling behind him deepened.

Closer now. Far too close.

He turned sharply around another corner, and in front of him stood a massive doorway left half-open. Darkness spilled from within like cold breath escaping into the corridor.

He could keep running.

Or go inside.

Behind him, the creature's claws scraped violently against the cold stone.

The creature was almost upon him.

Elias made his choice.

And threw himself into the darkness beyond the doorway.
