During my magic research with the fairies, I learned many things about magic. In order to perceive other people's magic, I project out imperceptibly small amounts of my own magic. The reason I could only see so far is that I did not have enough magic to spread it even further.
If I supplemented my magic with the fairies' magic, I could perceive things much further away. It just so happened that I was observing the trading post when that situation with Derek happened.
