In the evening, at the Senju home;
Mito's birthday party was coming to an end soon. It was a smaller affair than Naruto's own birthday, not for anything but for the timing. To make a big celebration when most of the village is still hurting from what happened a year ago. Maybe a year or two more before they could hold a proper celebration that Mito would come to remember.
The party was small. The only ones invited and who attended were Hiruzen, Jiraiya, Shizune, and Kakashi, who came a bit after sunset. The party didn't take long, and after the guests gave Mito her birthday presents, which all consisted of toys or clothing, they started to leave one by one.
Hiruzen was the last to leave, but as he was about to exit, he turned towards Naruto, who was seeing him out.
"My boy, I want to see you in my office tomorrow morning at 8," Hiruzen said, looking at Naruto
Naruto blinked in slight surprise before nodding and saying, "I will be there, sensei. See you tomorrow."
"Good night, Naruto-kun," Hiruzen said as he turned around and stepped out of the house
"Good night, Saru-sensei," Naruto replied as he watched Hiruzen leave the compound
Tsunade sighed as she stood silently beside the living room door. She heard the short exchange. Her son is going to join the Anbu tomorrow, despite her not liking it one bit.
8 am next morning, Hokage office;
Knock, knock, knock
"Come in," Hiruzen said as he looked up from his paperwork towards the door.
"Good morning, Sensei," Naruto said as he entered before closing the door after him
Naruto woke up as early as usual, did his early morning exercises, showered, had breakfast, and left a couple dozen clones to work on different jutsu before making his way to meet Hiruzen.
"Good morning, Naruto-kun. I hope you had a nice morning." Hiruzen said with a soft smile
"It's quite nice, nothing out of the ordinary," Naruto replied with a shrug.
"That is good." Hiruzen nodded before his face turned serious.
"I have called you today to tell you where you are going to be reassigned from now until the foreseeable future," Hiruzen said with a serious tone as Naruto looked at him silently.
"From now on, you are going to be a member of the ANBU," Hiruzen said while looking at Naruto's reaction, but he was surprised by the lack of it.
"You don't seem surprised," Hiruzen said with a raised eyebrow
"It isn't much of a surprise. I was never part of the typical four-man ninja team. And I don't think that you are going to assign me indefinitely to the hospital, as you always insisted that I get more real combat experience. So, the only opinion I can see is that of the Anbu, especially after my entry in the bingo book, as it would make things quite troublesome for me or my teammates if I joined regular Chunin teams. And let's not forget how most of the general population thinks of me. Shinobi or civilians." Naruto replied with a blank tone.
"And are you fine with this reassignment?" Hiruzen asked, looking at Naruto
"I have no problem with it," Naruto replied simply
"Very well then," Hiruzen said, looking closely at Naruto's expression before nodding
"Hawk," Hiruzen called. After which, an Anbu with a hawk mask appeared beside Hiruzen, looking at Naruto.
"Naruto-kun, this is Hawk, the Anbu commander. He will take you to register with the Anbu corps. Listen to everything he is going to tell you. It will be important." Hiruzen said, to which Naruto nodded
Hawk silently went beside Naruto before putting an arm on his shoulder and disappearing in a body flicker.
On the roof of the Hokage building;
Naruto and Hawk appeared in a swirl of leaves on the rooftop before Hawk stood in front of Naruto.
"Before we enter the Anbu headquarters, there are some things you need to know," Hawk said with a blank tone of voice as Naruto looked at him.
"From now on, you address me as Hawk-taichou. Usually, an Anbu member or your new Anbu captain will be the one to help register you to the Anbu, but you are a bit different, as you are Hokage-sama's student, and you are entering the Anbu through his recommendation. So your orientation falls on my shoulders." Hawk said while Naruto listened
"There is a set of rules you have to follow. One, the chain of command is as follows: the highest is Hokage-sama, then me, then your Anbu captain. You are expected to follow orders as long as they don't interfere with Hokage-sama's orders. Two, when you register with the Anbu, you would be given a mask and a code name. Every Anbu operative has one. You are required to call them by their code name as long as they are on duty, and you will be called by your codename. Three, You are required to keep your Identity concealed and keep low profile in your personal life" Hawk said, and Naruto stayed silent, listening
"Four, What happens on Anbu mission stays with the Anbu and the Hokage. You aren't allowed to talk about any mission or Anbu dynamics to anyone outside the organization. Five, on missions, you are required to avoid capture by any means necessary. If you got captured and couldn't escape, you are required to be able to destroy your body to avoid any information from reaching the enemy." Hawk said, looking at Naruto's expression, especially at the last part. Seeing that there was no change other than a slight eye-widening, he continued
"Lastly, if you observe any acts of disloyalty or corruption within the ANBU division, you are required to notify the Hokage. Is everything clear?" Hawk said
"Yes, Hawk-taichou," Naruto replied
"Good, now we are going to the Anbu headquarters to finish your registration and meet your team," Hawk said before putting his hand on Naruto's shoulder and disappearing in a body flicker, leaving some leaves swirling in the air behind them.
