Morning sunlight spilled across the academy grounds, bathing the stone buildings in a warm golden glow.
For the first time since Kael had arrived at the Royal Academy, the campus was quiet.
The endless chatter of students had all but disappeared. Many had left through the academy gates the previous evening, eager to spend the weekend with their families in the city below.
Kael watched them from his dormitory window until the last carriage disappeared beyond the mountain road.
Then he turned away.
There was nowhere for him to go.
After washing up and eating a simple breakfast in the nearly empty dining hall, Kael stepped outside.
Without classes to attend or assignments waiting for him, the academy felt... different.
Slower.
Almost peaceful.
For the first time, he wasn't rushing from one lesson to another.
He simply walked.
---
The academy was far larger than he had originally thought.
During the week, he'd only travelled between classrooms, the dormitories, and the training grounds.
Now, with empty pathways stretching in every direction, he began exploring.
Towering stone buildings lined the mountain terraces.
Some were dedicated entirely to magic, their windows glowing faintly with shifting runes.
Others echoed with the rhythmic clang of metal striking metal.
Curious, Kael followed the sound.
He soon found himself overlooking a massive forge built into the mountainside.
Dozens of furnaces burned continuously despite the weekend.
Blacksmiths hammered glowing steel upon enchanted anvils while apprentices hurried between them carrying unfinished blades.
Above the entrance hung a carved stone sign.
Academy Forge.
Weapons weren't simply purchased.
They were made.
Kael watched quietly for several minutes before continuing on.
Farther along the path stood another enormous building unlike any he'd seen before.
Its roof was formed from crystal rather than stone, allowing sunlight to pour into the chambers below.
Rows of glass containers filled with colourful liquids lined the interior.
Students in white robes carefully mixed ingredients beneath the watchful eyes of instructors.
Alchemy.
Kael made a mental note to return another day.
Everything here existed for a reason.
If he intended to survive the academy, he needed to understand all of it.
---
Eventually, the stone path widened into an enormous circular plaza.
Statues stood proudly around its edge.
Each towered nearly twice the height of an ordinary person.
Kael slowed.
Every statue depicted a former academy graduate.
At the base of each rested a polished plaque.
Aldric Voss
Storm Sovereign
Graduate of the Royal Academy
Another.
Seraphine Vale
Saint of Frost
Another.
Gareth Ironheart
Titan of Steel
Kael walked from one monument to the next.
Each represented someone whose name had become part of history.
Heroes.
Kings.
Generals.
Great Mages.
Great Swordsmen.
Every one of them had once stood where he stood now.
He stopped before the final statue.
Its stone sword pointed toward the sky.
Beneath it were carved four simple words.
Power Earns Eternal Respect.
Kael lowered his eyes.
Every plaque listed the graduate's Path.
Fire Path.
Lightning Path.
Sword Path.
Earth Path.
Not one lacked a Path.
Not one.
For a brief moment, the plaza felt much larger than before.
Then Kael continued walking.
---
His feet eventually carried him back to the academy library.
Unlike yesterday, someone was already inside.
An elderly man sat behind the front desk with a book open before him.
Thin spectacles rested upon the bridge of his nose.
Without looking up, he spoke.
"Returning yesterday's books already?"
Kael paused.
"You remember me?"
"I remember anyone under the age of twenty who voluntarily reads theory."
The old man finally looked up.
A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Most students borrow spellbooks."
"You borrowed principles."
Kael placed the books neatly upon the counter.
"I don't have a Path."
The librarian nodded slowly.
"Knowledge has never required one."
Those words lingered in Kael's mind.
The old man gathered the books before speaking again.
"If you're interested in understanding mana itself, you'll find the foundational texts more useful than modern combat manuals."
He reached beneath the desk and produced another book.
Its leather cover was faded with age.
The Fundamentals of Mana.
"This was one of the academy's earliest textbooks."
Kael accepted it carefully.
"Thank you."
"Return it in one piece."
"I intend to."
The librarian chuckled softly before returning to his own reading.
---
Kael spent the next several hours in the quiet reading hall.
Unlike the other books he'd studied, this one avoided discussing specific Paths.
Instead, it explained mana as the foundation upon which every Path was built.
It described how mana existed naturally throughout the world.
How every living creature possessed it.
How humans shaped it through training and discipline.
Several passages caught Kael's attention.
He copied them carefully into his notebook.
Not because they answered his questions.
Because they raised better ones.
---
As evening approached, Kael closed the book and left the library.
Passing the training grounds, he noticed several familiar faces.
A handful of F-Class students had gathered despite the weekend.
Their equipment was worn.
Several practice swords had visible cracks.
One training dummy leaned noticeably to one side.
Still...
They trained.
One student repeatedly swung his sword despite obvious exhaustion.
Another practised footwork alone across the field.
No instructors.
No spectators.
Just determination.
Kael watched quietly.
The academy had given them less than everyone else.
Yet they had still shown up.
He understood that feeling.
Life had never offered him easy paths either.
Standing still wouldn't change that.
Eventually, he continued toward the dormitories.
---
Night settled across the academy.
Back inside his room, Kael placed the borrowed book beside his notebook.
He opened the notebook to a blank page.
After a moment's thought, he began writing.
Current Goals
• Understand mana.
• Strengthen my body.
• Learn how the academy truly works.
His pen hovered for a second before adding one final line.
• Become someone the system cannot ignore.
Kael closed the notebook.
Outside, the academy stood silent beneath the moonlight.
The weekend had only just begun.
Yet somehow...
It felt like his real education had finally started.
