Chapter 17 - The Musician by the Window

The rain finally stopped sometime during the night.

Morning sunlight now shimmered softly across wet stone roads outside the café, making the town look cleaner than usual.

Inside Moonbean Café—

Lina was asleep again.

Ren stared at her slumped over the table.

"…Do adventurers not own beds?"

Without opening her eyes, Lina answered immediately.

"Beds cost money."

"You spend all your money on coffee and desserts."

"That's called investing in happiness."

"That's called poor financial decisions."

"Same thing."

Ren sighed while placing fresh bread onto cooling racks.

At this point, seeing Lina inside the café early in the morning no longer surprised anyone.

Even Serena stopped questioning it.

Mostly because she herself had become a regular customer too.

The guild receptionist currently sat near the window drinking coffee while organizing paperwork before work.

Fina quietly helped wipe tables nearby while humming softly to herself.

Ren paused slightly.

"…You're humming."

Fina froze instantly.

The humming stopped.

"…Sorry."

"You don't need to apologize for humming."

"…Oh."

The little girl looked genuinely surprised by that.

Before Ren could say more—

A soft melody drifted through the open café doorway.

Everyone paused.

The sound was faint.

Gentle.

Like sunlight turned into music.

Lina slowly lifted her head from the table.

"…Huh?"

The melody grew closer.

A string instrument.

Probably something similar to a violin.

But warmer.

Softer.

The music carried through the quiet street beautifully enough that even passing pedestrians slowed down.

Then—

A young man appeared outside the café window.

He wore a long faded coat and carried a wooden instrument case across his back.

Messy silver-blond hair fell over tired amber eyes, and despite looking around Ren's age, exhaustion lingered heavily in his expression.

The musician stopped walking the moment he smelled the café.

Ren recognized that reaction instantly now.

Another victim.

The young man stared through the window curiously while music from his instrument faded into silence.

Then slowly—

He stepped inside.

The little bell above the door chimed softly.

Warm air greeted him immediately.

As did the smell of coffee, cinnamon, and fresh bread.

The musician visibly relaxed.

"…This place smells unreal."

Lina pointed sleepily.

"Welcome to the bean cult."

"We are NOT calling it that," Ren said immediately.

The musician blinked in confusion.

"…Should I be concerned?"

"Yes," Serena answered calmly.

"No," Ren answered at the exact same time.

The musician laughed quietly.

A tired laugh.

But genuine.

Then he carefully removed the instrument case from his back before sitting near the window.

The seat closest to sunlight.

Interesting.

Artists really were predictable sometimes.

"My name is Theo," he said.

"Ren."

Theo's eyes slowly wandered around the café.

Unlike most first-time customers, he observed the atmosphere more than the food.

The warm lighting.

The quiet conversations.

The relaxed expressions.

Even Fina humming softly again while cleaning tables.

Then he smiled faintly.

"…This place feels peaceful."

"That's apparently our specialty," Ren replied.

Theo looked toward the coffee brewing station curiously.

"So what exactly is everyone addicted to here?"

"Coffee," several customers answered immediately.

Theo laughed softly again.

"Alright then."

He leaned back in his chair tiredly.

"Give me your strongest recommendation."

A dangerous sentence.

Lina gasped dramatically.

"He said the words."

"The dangerous customer words," Boris agreed seriously.

Theo looked increasingly confused.

Ren ignored everyone and started preparing coffee.

As always, the brewing process settled the atmosphere naturally.

Grind.

Pour.

Steam rising slowly into warm air.

Theo watched the movements carefully.

"…You make that like music."

Ren paused slightly.

"…Music?"

"The rhythm."

Theo rested his chin against one hand thoughtfully.

"Smooth. Familiar. Comfortable."

That was honestly one of the strangest compliments Ren had ever received.

Yet somehow—

He understood it immediately.

A few minutes later, Ren placed a cup of Cinnamon Rain Latte beside Theo.

Steam drifted lazily upward.

Theo stared at the drink briefly before taking a sip.

Silence.

Then—

His shoulders slowly relaxed.

The exhaustion in his eyes softened slightly.

"…Oh."

There it was again.

That moment.

Theo took another slower sip.

Then quietly laughed under his breath.

"This is unfair."

Ren leaned lightly against the counter.

"That's also a common reaction."

Theo glanced around the café again.

"I've traveled through six towns this month," he said quietly.

"Taverns are loud. Inns are crowded. Roads are exhausting."

His fingers lightly tapped against the coffee cup.

"But this place…"

The musician looked toward the rain-cleaned streets outside the window.

"…Feels quiet in the best way."

The café itself grew calmer around those words.

Even Lina stopped joking for once.

Because everyone here understood that feeling already.

Moonbean Café had become somewhere people rested emotionally.

Not just physically.

Then suddenly—

Theo opened his instrument case.

Inside rested a beautifully worn string instrument made from dark polished wood.

Mira immediately leaned forward excitedly.

"You're a traveling musician?"

Theo nodded slightly.

"Mostly taverns and festivals."

"That sounds amazing," Fina whispered quietly.

Theo looked toward her and smiled gently.

"It sounds more glamorous than it actually is."

He adjusted the instrument beneath his chin.

"Still…"

His eyes wandered around the café once more.

"…I think this place deserves music."

Before anyone could answer—

The first note filled the room.

Soft.

Warm.

Beautiful.

Conversation throughout the café slowly faded.

Even the fireplace crackling seemed quieter somehow.

Theo's music flowed naturally through Moonbean Café like it belonged there.

Gentle melodies wrapped around the smell of coffee and cinnamon while sunlight shimmered through the windows.

For a few moments—

Nobody spoke.

Nobody rushed.

The café simply existed peacefully together.

And unexpectedly—

Fina began humming along quietly beside the counter.

Tiny.

Soft.

But smiling.

Ren watched the scene silently.

Customers relaxing peacefully.

Music drifting warmly through the room.

The café glowing softly in morning sunlight.

Then—

[Ding.]

A notification appeared.

[Unique Café Experience Created.]

Moonbean Café has hosted live music for the first time.

New Atmosphere Feature Unlocked:

Ambient Music Bonus

Effect:

Music performed inside the café slightly improves customer mood and comfort.

"…The café is evolving again."

"What's evolving?" Lina asked immediately.

"Nothing."

Theo lowered the instrument slightly and laughed quietly.

"You really do say that constantly."

Ren sighed.

"…I'm surrounded by observant people."

Outside, more pedestrians had stopped near the café windows after hearing the music.

Some simply listened quietly.

Others stared curiously inside.

But none entered immediately.

Instead—

They smiled.

And for the first time since arriving in this world—

Ren realized Moonbean Café was no longer just changing its customers.

Little by little—

It was changing the entire street around it too.
