"WAHHHHHH!"
The military soldiers inside the base charged out, boots pounding the dirt.
Pokémon roared beside them, Arcanine, Tauros and Dodrio were some of the mounts that the rangers had. They immediately mounted them and matched forward. They had renewed confidence in their eyes.
Yes, fear still gripped their hearts, but Gladion's speech had lit a fire. They now fought for Indigo, for the oath to protect citizens, for the future, to honor their predecessors who died in the Infinite War. Gladion's words had turned their terror into purpose.
They now remembered how the trainers in the infinite Pokemon war who fought for the future generation, for them. How they did not care about their own lives or the safety of their Pokemon and fought against impossible odds. They even fought legendaries despite knowing the cruel fate awaiting them.
The soldiers remembered that if they retreated they would not be like the heroes of the infinite Pokemon war that they looked upto. They would be cowards who ran from battle. Their children would not look upto them instead may even resent them or be embarassed by them.
And most of all what if some stray Pokemon reached their village, town or city where their family lived and hurt their family or worse.
The soldiers swore in their mind to fight until their last breath. There were worse things than death after all in this world.
They looked in admiration at Gladion. A kid...no... a man younger than them had managed to instill confidence in them.
A sixteen year old was telling them, why they should not cowering in fear. They now realised that it was not only his strong Pokemon and battle skills that made him such a powerful trainer and a gym leader. He had the will to never give up no matter the odds.
With a few minutes of his speech, Gladion had managed to get the confidence of the military. He knew that every military soldier that survived would spread his words over to other soldiers. This should help him in future if he wanted some favours from the military.
Gladion smiled, satisfied. Who knew an Attack on Titan speech would work in the Pokémon world?'
He rode Elder Green, his massive Tropius, flying just six feet off the ground. Leaves rustled from its wings. Other flyers, Pidgeot, Staraptor, Noctowl did the same.
Ground riders galloped on Rapidash, Dodrio, Rhyhorn.
Gladion knew flying higher was suicide. Ground Pokémon of the Pokemon tide could launch Rock Throw or Hyper Beam. Flying ones like Crobat, Fearow could attack in numbers. One hit to a wing, and the rider on that Pokemon would be plummeted to death.
The general, Grandpa Maren's old war buddy rode up on his Arcanine next to Gladion.
"Good speech, brat," he barked, grinning. "Kids today got fire in their words. Guess you have a way with words just like Maren did. Well, his speech consisted of more curse words and words like 'You dogs or donkeys.' but he still had a way with them."
The general face hardened. "I gave you lead for a reason, boy. You're a Gym Leader and you have come here to help under the Champion's orders. And as a Gym Leader you are a higher rank than me. And the missions success depends on you and your Pokemon. The lives of my soldiers and the safety of the region depends on you boy so don't disappoint me."
Gladion stayed honest. "I'll try my best. But I can't guarantee everyone lives."
The general snorted. "I don't expect miracles. Just don't take any stupid risks that would endanger the lives of my soldiers. I don't want any reckless deaths."
Gladion nodded. He thought for a few seconds before grabbing a Poké Ball and released Ultron, his Metagross. The steel giant hovered, four arms ready, eyes glowing.
'How can I help, sir?' Ultron asked telepathically.
The general eyed it. 'A Metagross huh. It feels as strong as my ace. Well. It's a Pseudo-legendary after all. I wonder how tough his Tyranitar is.'
Gladion sent a mental message. 'Go to her. Convince her to come. Tell her the debt is paid after this.'
He flashed an image of a location and teleportation coordinates. Ultron nodded, vanished in a psychic flash.
The general raised an eyebrow. "Where'd you send the Metagross?"
"Just to get some backup," Gladion said. "In case things go south. He would be back in a minute."
The general didn't push further with more questions.
The army marched ahead at full speed. Dust kicked up. Pokémon growled. Gladion's Tropius flapped steady. Soldiers glanced at him with hope in their eyes now.
They reached Mt. Silver's base where the Pokemon tide was being held back by thousands of soldiers and their Pokemon. And there was chaos everywhere.
Pokémon bodies lay scattered. Blood soaked the ground. A Rhydon corpse smoked from fire. An Onix was crushed under boulders. Human soldiers slumped against rocks, wounds open.
Craters dotted the earth from explosions. Fires burned grass and trees. Carcasses of Pokemon piled wild and tamed alike. A Fearow wing twitched, then stilled.
Blood was mixed with dirt into mud. Screams echoed of both Pokémon and people.
Frontline soldiers held the tide. Rock walls cracked under Steelix tails. Rangers fired Sleep Powder from Butterfree. But the tide pushed, Ursaring slashed, Golem rolled, Crobat poisoned.
Gladion's group joined. "Formation!" he shouted. "Spearhead Formation! We would pierce through the tide up the mountain!"
Soldiers moved fast. High-defense Pokémon took the front like Steelix, Aggron, Rhydon since they would be the ones to soak up the damage. They were in a straight line with 50 people in each row.
Gladion was at the tip of the spear at the forefront of everyone, on Elder Green.
His eyes locked ahead at the top of the mountain where Moltres awaited for them.
The spear charged.
