Chapter 25 - Three Days

The line suddenly went dead. For a moment, no one moved. The silence that followed felt heavier than before, fueling their desperate need to investigate.

Back in the room, the silence thickened...

And Outside, the world continued like nothing had happened. Cars moved. People laughed. Somewhere, a news broadcast played over a café speaker.

Even the media hadn't caught wind of the incident. It happened too remotely with few people knowing about it. Life pretending it wasn't already standing too close to something it couldn't survive.

But inside this circle?

The hunt had already begun.

A file opened on a dark screen; grainy surveillance stills, partially corrupted. A vehicle. A plate half-caught by reflection. A figure stepping away too quickly, as though urgency could erase guilt.

"Found one lead," an agent finally reported. "Male. Mid-thirties. Connected to a logistics contractor operating near the perimeter. He's gone off-grid."

Silence again.

Then Nikolas spoke, voice lower now; almost quiet enough to be mistaken for restraint.

"Good."

A single word. Heavy with intent.

"Don't bring him in."

A pause stretched.

"Lose him."That was worse.

Because "lose" didn't mean failure. It meant follow until he forgets he's being followed.

Until fear became constant.

Until every shadow looked like consequence.

Until he ran… and still never escaped what was coming.

Nikolas leaned back slightly, eyes cold and steady.

"They thought this would stay hidden," he said, a faint exhale left his lips. "It won't."

And somewhere far away, unaware, unguarded, still breathing like the world was normal the man ran.

For three days, Leonardo's agents followed him without being detected.

Every movement was tracked.

Every phone call monitored.

Every place he visited recorded.

The man looked nervous, restless and flinching. Like someone who knew danger was closing in but didn't know from which direction.

Yet something wasn't right.

He never contacted anyone important, never collected money and worse, he never tried to leave the country.

Nothing.

It was as though he was running aimlessly. Until the fourth night, when the target entered an abandoned warehouse near the docks.

The moment he stepped inside, Leonardo's agents moved and twelve agents surrounded the entire building.

Three entered through the front, while the others secured every possible exit.

No mistakes. No openings. No way out..a completely locked-in target.

At least, that's what they believed. Minutes later, the lead agent's voice came through the encrypted line, "Target is moving."

Several seconds passed, Then his voice changed in a bewildered confusion. His breathing heightened in an alarming tone, one word leaving his lips. "Wait..."

The sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the communicator. Another pause. "He's gone."

Silence.

The warehouse was empty and the man had vanished, just like that. There were no hidden tunnels, no broken windows, no vehicles leaving the area and what shocked them to the core more was no signs of a breach.

Just nothing.

It was as though he had simply disappeared.

The agents searched every corner of the building, looking for secret openings hidden compartments, or any clue that could lead them to where he had gone.

Twice. And even three times!

Still nothing.

A cold feeling settled over everyone because this wasn't supposed to happen. Some of the agents shifted uneasily, Some kept tapping their feet against the tiled floor without even realizing it.

Others kept looking around, exchanging nervous glances or their eyes moving from one corner to another as tension rose through the room with every passing second.

Everyone was waiting for one call. One call that would either bring consequences or much worse consequences. Because there was nowhere he could have gone and yet, within minutes, he had disappeared.

The report reached Nikolas less than five minutes later. The room around him fell completely silent as he listened and for several seconds, he didn't say a word.

His silence was dangerously heavy in that moment.

Then suddenly."WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S GONE?!" The furious roar exploded through the line.

Several agents physically flinched, one nearly dropped his communicator, while another fumbled with the papers in his hands before quickly catching himself.

Someone else straightened immediately, his eyes fixed ahead as though looking anywhere else might somehow make him a target. A few forced their faces into expressions of professionalism, though their eyes betrayed them.

Others tried to maintain a fearless front, but the confidence on their faces was beginning to falter. Or at least, they tried to hide it.

Because beneath those controlled expressions, every heart was beating hard against their chests.

This had never happened before, when Leonardo's people were set on a target, they got the target.

Close. No matter how hard the circumstances were.

No matter how carefully the person hid and how far he ran. They found them. They always did.

But this—Sadly, this was different.

The sound of something crashing echoed from Nikolas' side of the line. Something had broken into disjointed parts

A chair or maybe a table.

Nobody knew. Nobody dared enough to ask because his voice was enough.

Raw fury filled every word, "I GAVE YOU ONE JOB!"

Another loud crash followed.

The agents exchanged uneasy glances, they had seen Nikolas angry before but never like this.

Never.

Not even during business wars. Not even during attacks from rival business organizations attempting to strip away their influence, challenge their position, bring them down or turn them submissive.

Not even when billions were at stake.

Those people had never managed to take anything..not even a hair from them or even a scratch on Leonardo's name, title or wealth.

Yet when Nikolas dealt with those certain people in the business sector, he never got angry not even the slightest. More like he was confident almost careless.

Confident that no one could outmaneuver Leonardo and his partner (Nikolas) who stood among the most powerful billionaires in Italy.

People knew better than to challenge them. But this—this was different.

Because this involved Leonardo who was more than blood to Nikolas and most expecially more than a business partner.

His one and only Boss. His best friend. The one and only man whose authority he would never question and Leonardo trusted with everything in him.

And everyone knew there was no limit to what Nikolas would do for him. "Search again." His voice suddenly dropped, low. Deadly.

Far more frightening than the shouting.

"Search every road."

"Every building."

"Every warehouse."

"Every port."

"Every airport." His breathing sounded rough through the line, barely controlled.

Then he added— "I want every nook and cranny searched."

"If he's hiding underground, find him."

"If someone is helping him, find them too."

His voice lowered another degree. "And if any of you come back empty-handed again..." He stopped.

The threat remained unfinished, it didn't need to be spoken. Fear and shock ran through the veins of every agent present and everyone understood what's at stake.

The line disconnected.

For the next two days, Leonardo's entire intelligence network moved like a machine.

Agents worked without sleep like mechanical robots. Security footage was reviewed, phone records were checked, vehicles were tracked and every possible lead was investigated.

Yet; not even a trail ora clue. The man had vanished completely. The worse was there was no phone activity, financial transactions, movements and even a trace.

It was as though he had never existed.

The frustration inside the headquarters grew heavier with each passing hour. Today marked the third day of endless searching.

Three days had passed since the man disappeared, following the three days Leonardo's agents had spent tracking him before the warehouse incident.

It was crazy. Two separate searches, two different three-day periods, and both had ended with the same thing—nothing.

And somehow, all of this had happened within the same month.

Three days!! Three days of looking for leads.

For searching for clues.

Three days of finding absolutely nothing and this was the first time it had taken the agents this long.

Normally, their work was swift, precise almost flawless without even the slightest mistake as if they did everything next to perfection.

But this circumstance was just too clean, like a slate that had been wiped completely bare without a tiny detail to be found.

Even the way the man had escaped, no one could figure out how he did it and perhaps that was what unsettled them most.

At the headquarters more like a secret private residence hidden behind an ordinary-looking exterior in a secluded part of the city, obviously far away from the public eye.

From the outside, it looked expensive and quiet the atmosphere was anything but ordinary.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing that would attract attention but inside the house was a completely different world.

The upper floors contained comfortable living quarters for agents who sometimes worked through the night, while the lower levels housed the real heart of intelligence operation.

The entire underground lower level had been turned into a high-security intelligence center built for Leonardo's most trusted people.

Large screens covered the center the walls, displaying live security feeds, showing surveillance footage, maps, locations.

Encrypted communication systems occupied another.

There were rows of advanced computers which sat on long dark desks, each connected to different security systems.

There were private meeting rooms, secure archives, medical supplies/medical room in case of treatment of the injured, weapons storage, backup generators, computers capable of accessing layers of intelligence, and enough technological equipment to keep the entire operation running independently for days.

Most expecially, private entrances and emergency exits.

Everything the agents could possibly need was there all the rooms had been designed with purpose and every system had a backup.

The entrance was fully monitored, nothing entered or left the building without being recorded.

It was less a home than a fortress disguised as one and no outsiders knew the place existed.

It was one of Leonardo's most protected locations.

one of the places where Leonardo's most trusted agents could work without anyone knowing.

And tonight; every person inside could feel the anger hanging in the air because in the middle of the main operations room stood Nikolas.

The tension inside it was almost unbearable. His chest rose and fell heavily as his eyes swept across the agents gathered before him.

They had searched every corner of the warehouse making sure to search through the exits, abandoned vehicles and every possible hiding place.

And still, the man was gone.

Leonardo was lying unconscious in a hospital because of these people and the one man who could lead them to the rest of the accomplices had slipped through their fingers.

Nikos' jaw tightened.

"You're telling me," he said slowly, his voice dangerously low, "that after all this time, you still couldn't find him?"

The defeaning silence that followed showed that no one answered...not even one person dared to part their lips or made a signal.

His eyes moved from one agent to another.

They wore the organization's dark tactical uniforms, fitted for movement rather than appearance. Black fabric stretched across their shoulders and torsos, reinforced in places where protection was necessary.

Dark trousers pants and heavy boots, suiting their dark uniforms. each one dressed in the same sharp tactical outfit. Their identification cards and communication devices were secured against their chests.

Some wore communication pieces against their to their ears while discreet insignia marked their positions within Leonardo's organization.

Their uniforms were always perfect, straight, clean and professional like their work.

Every person standing before him was trained these were not ordinary men but Leonardo's people.

Some had worked under him for years and already become used to Nikolas' anger and were not easily affected by it.

But even they wouldn't dare underestimate the man standing before them because loyalty mattered here.

Leonardo's authority was absolute and so was Nikolas'. Everyone knew him as the Billionaire's second- the only man powerful and trusted enough to stand beside the big boss.

Tonight, however, alot of them their bodies betrayed them. Some agents stood straight, their faces carefully controlled.

Others couldn't meet his eyes visibly tensed one agent's fingers trembled slightly around his communicator while another swallowed hard.

The last agent at the edge, his shoulders was completely stiff.

A younger agent looked toward the floor before quickly raising his eyes again.

One of the senior agents remained completely still, having learned to withstand his temper and kept his attention fixed on Nikolas, determined not to allow fear to interfere with his loyalty.

But even he knew better than to mistake Nikolas's silence for safety.

Everyone was ready to continue working, ready to do whatever was needed.

A few had already worked with Nikolas long enough to know his anger and weren't easily shaken by it.

But even they remained alert.

Because this wasn't ordinary anger. This was Nikolas.

And everyone in that room knew that loyalty to Leonardo and Nikolas was the only reason they still stood there.

Because no matter how angry or harsh he talked, they would never abandon Leonardo's and his second authority.

He was a storm in a dark suit.

"Answer me!"

The agents shook slightly.

Sweat gathered along the foreheads of several men. One quickly wiped his palm against the side of his trousers.

Another shifted backward, almost hiding behind the agent in front of him as every pair of eyes watched Nikolas carefully because everywhere reeked of rage.

Rage ready to be unleashed by the built man standing in a dark suit before them.

One of them finally stepped forward cautiously.

His eyes blinked several times as he fought to maintain steady breathing and keep his hands from trembling.

"Sir, we searched the entire warehouse. There was no sign of him. We believe he may have escaped before—"

Nikolas crossed the distance between them in seconds and grabbed him by the lapels of his shirt and yanked him forward.

"You believe?"

The man's face drained of color, his legs suddenly couldn't hold him anymore.

For a moment it was as though his body and his legs were of two different existences, that had forgotten how to work together.

Nikos' grip tightened as the man let out a strained breath.

"Sir—"

"You believe?" Nikolas repeated.

His voice became colder.. almost quiet. "Leonardo is lying in a hospital bed because of that bastard..."

His voice nearly broke but he caught it immediately. An angry glint still remained in his eyes."...and you're standing here telling me what you believed?"

The agent swallowed, the poor man's heart hammered violently beneath Nikolas's fist.

"Sir, I—"

"THREE DAYS!" His voice thundered through the room, every body shook and faces flinched as his voice echoed against the walls.

"THREE fucking days. Twice this month, and all of you couldn't find him?!". He shoved the agent backward.

The poor man stumbled nearly falling flat before quickly regained his balance and moved behind the other agents.

Nobody dared move or dared speak.

Nikos turned away.

His chest continued rising and falling heavily and abruptly, dragged a frustrated hand through his hair and tried to contain the fury clawing through his chest.

"I've never believed you agents could be so incompetent."

His voice rose again. "So damn incompetent that three days of searching gives me nothing!"

"So damn slow."

"And so easily fooled!" He screamed the last words.

His restraint finally snapped," And you come here to tell me nothing! Like .Nothing!" A scoff left his lips "Is the guts for me?"

His fist slammed against the nearest surface.

The impact sent a sharp crack reverberating through the room, the sound bouncing off the walls again and again. His knuckles were already turning a harsh, angry red.

He didn't seem to feel the pain. If anything, he only clenched his fist harder, until his knuckles whitened.

Several agents backed away as nkolas's breathing became heavier, uncontrolled His shoulders rose and fell beneath his dark suit.

His fists tightened until his pale knuckles burned, the hand slightly shifted and it revealed the mark on the wall.

Swiftly he turned back. His eyes burned. "Three days!"

His rage was no longer something he could keep beneath the surface.

It was no longer something sitting quietly beneath his skin. It had broken free, no longer restrained, fully bared to them.

His eyes were red around the edges and his fists were clenched tightly at his sides.

The agents backed away slightly again not because they were afraid of being attacked.

But because they could feel it..feel the rage coming from him.

Some stared at him in shock. Some lowered their eyes.

His jaw clenched so hard that the muscle moved beneath his skin while his throat worked with every hard swallow, his Adam's apple rising and falling as his breathing became heavier.

He was trying to hold himself together. Trying bcause this had happened before, months ago or precisely last year.

The same feeling and failure to find a person who should have been found. The same impossible silence and lack of answers.

And yet, a similar trail that had disappeared right beneath their noses to finding what would have solved the last piece of the puzzle.

And now—It was happening again. The memory flashed through his mind.

No.

He crushed it immediately, he wasn't going through that memory lane.

Not now! Never!!

And yet— here they were again. The best hands in the organization were at the top of the investigation again

The best agents.

The best analysts. The people Leonardo trusted with the problems surrounding his empire.

And still, nothing to show for it, not even a clue.

A call suddenly rang through the room. It cut through everyone's racing hearts...
