Daniel frowned.
He had heard a few rumors over the years, rumors about the Devereux family. But he had never bothered to indulge in them.
After all, there were some things a man was better off not knowing.
Back inside the hospital room.
After all the doctors had scrambled away, the girl, who had become everyone's life-or-death ticket, moved her hand.
Slowly, her eyes fluttered open.
However, this time, there was no trace of emotion on that pale face. Her eyes were cold and empty as she quietly surveyed her surroundings.
She tried to move, but immediately frowned in pain.
A groan escaped her lips.
The pain was unbearable. Her entire body ached.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
The alarms suddenly started ringing.
The girl frowned even more.
Bang!
The door shot open as people in white rushed inside.
However, when the first ten people entered, they suddenly stopped in their tracks.
Their eyes landed on the girl lying on the bed.
They didn't move.
Those behind them became annoyed at why they had suddenly stopped. But when they noticed the expressions on their faces and followed their gaze, they too came to a standstill.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
It was as though the entire room had suddenly forgotten how to breathe.
---
Daniel, who had just left his boss's office, heard the alarm and immediately started running.
"Shit! What happened again? I still want to live, please!"
As he said that, he increased his pace.
But suddenly—
Whoosh!
A figure rushed past him.
Then another.
Then another.
Daniel stopped for half a second.
"What the hell is going on?"
He looked ahead and saw that the people had already turned the corner and disappeared.
He didn't need anyone to tell him who had just run past him.
What worried him was the fact that he hadn't even been able to catch up.
"Are they running for their lives or what?"
Daniel quickly continued running.
When he finally reached the ward, he stopped by the door to catch his breath.
Beads of sweat had already formed on his forehead. He placed one hand against the wall and took several deep breaths.
"What is happening this time...?" he said quietly.
He stretched his neck, trying to hear what was happening inside.
But it was oddly quiet.
Too quiet.
With all those people rushing into the room, there should have been complete chaos by now.
Daniel thought to himself.
He took in a large breath as he braced himself.
"Okay, no pressure."
He walked toward the door but suddenly paused at the entrance of the ward.
The doors were wide open.
---
A few minutes ago...
Edmund sat in his office, going through the report on how his son had been managing the company while he had been away.
Looking through it, he was very pleased.
His son hadn't disappointed him.
But when his thoughts returned to the girl in the ward, he couldn't remain happy for long.
He was deep in thought when he heard the alarm ringing.
His head snapped up.
He jolted to his feet immediately.
His face became stern, and the look in his eyes turned icy.
He walked to the door and opened it swiftly.
"Let's go."
He said it to his bodyguards standing outside before striding forward in large steps.
However, his heart was deeply unsettled.
He didn't even realize when his large steps changed into a run.
He couldn't control the anxiety rising in his chest.
When he finally reached the ward, he saw a group of doctors crowded outside.
He frowned.
The temperature around him seemed to drop.
The bodyguards following behind him gulped in fear.
They looked at the people who were about to face Edmund's anger and shook their heads.
They had escaped once.
Could they still do it again?
One of the bodyguards thought.
"Move."
Edmund's voice was so icy and cold that it sent shivers through everyone who heard it.
Snapping out of there yrance, The doctors began shaking as they hurriedly moved aside, pulling the people beside them back with them.
A path was cleared almost instantly.
Edmund walked inside with heavy steps.
But the moment his eyes landed on the girl lying on the bed—
He stopped.
For the first time in a long while, Edmund Devereux was completely frozen.
The girl on the bed looked at the new person who had just walked in.
She was extremely tired, and her head was spinning from all the noise.
All she wanted was some peace and quiet.
Her eyes slowly moved toward the man standing before her.
His gaze was intense.
Too intense.
There was something strange about the way he looked at her, as though he had been searching for her for a very long time.
But she couldn't understand why.
She didn't know this man.
At least...
She didn't think she did.
Her head throbbed, making it difficult to think.
Still, the man's gaze was becoming increasingly irritating.
