Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: ARRIVING AT AURELIA

Soren sat by the flickering campfire in the middle of the dense woods, the crackling flames offering little comfort as his mind raced. The events of the past few days felt surreal—his grandfather's disappearance, the revelation of the shape-shifting elf, and his narrow escape with the Borealis Sword. He couldn't stop wondering: where was his real grandfather? The elf's cryptic words still echoed in his mind.

As he drifted into sleep, a nightmare took hold. He saw a silhouette of a man standing in the distance, but before Soren could call out, a chilling force from the shadows pulled the figure away into the darkness.

Soren woke up in the early morning, the dream still fresh in his mind. Shaking off the lingering fear, he gathered his belongings, strapped the Borealis Sword to his back, and set off again, determined to find answers.

For days, weeks even, he ventured through dense forests, over rolling hills, and across barren landscapes, with no sign of civilization in sight. His journey was long and tiring, but eventually, Soren stumbled upon a vast expanse of green, dotted with farmlands and flourishing with life. There, nestled in the distance, was a town surrounded by lush meadows—a stark contrast to the frozen wasteland he had left behind.

The town was called Aurelia, known for its warm climate and prosperous people. As Soren entered the town, he couldn't help but feel out of place amidst the bustling, joyful crowd. The townspeople moved with ease, smiling and laughing, completely unaware of the danger lurking beyond their borders.

While wandering the cobblestone streets, Soren suddenly bumped into a girl. She had a lively energy about her, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "You look new here," she said with a grin. "Want me to give you a tour?"

Soren hesitated, unsure if he wanted company. "No thanks," he replied, brushing her off, but the girl didn't take no for an answer.

She followed him persistently, chattering as if they were old friends. "I'm Elara, by the way. And you are?" she asked, seemingly undeterred by Soren's cold demeanor.

Soren sighed. "Soren. I'm from a distant village... but it was destroyed by a blizzard."

Elara's playful expression softened, her bright eyes clouding with concern. "Oh… I'm sorry to hear that."

Soren nodded, hoping that would be the end of the conversation, but Elara's curiosity only deepened. "How did you escape?" she asked.

"You don't need to know that," Soren muttered, trying to deflect her questions. But no matter what he said, Elara remained at his side, bouncing with energy as she continued her impromptu tour.

Suddenly, a loud bang echoed in the distance, and the sky erupted in a shower of colors. Fireworks. Soren flinched, startled by the unfamiliar noise, while Elara burst out laughing.

"You've never seen fireworks before?" she teased, her laughter light and melodic.

"No..." Soren admitted, his eyes wide with amazement as he watched the bright colors fill the sky. "What's going on?"

"There's a festival today!" Elara exclaimed. "We're celebrating the day our town's hero defeated the Minotaurs with the help of the Aurelite Vanguard four and a half years ago."

Soren's interest was piqued. "A hero? Where is he now?"

Elara's expression turned serious. "No one knows. He went on a mission to investigate a powerful being known as Khione... and never returned."

Soren's heart skipped a beat. "Khione?" he repeated, a spark of recognition flashing in his eyes. "I'm searching for Khione, too."

Elara's eyes widened in surprise. "You are? Then maybe you can help me find my brother… the hero."

Before Soren could respond, the breeze shifted, bringing with it a sudden chill. A wave of cold mist rolled down from the mountains, creeping toward the town like a silent threat. Soren's eyes narrowed as he sensed the familiar, icy presence in the air.

The storm was coming.
