"Did you come back specifically to save us?"
The boy calmed down, wiped his tears, and asked.
"No. But I did wonder if you were still alive, so I thought I'd save you if I could."

Since he gave Ah Piao the "Citizen's Last Wish Recorder," at least one of them, Ah Piao or her son, would survive.
And generally speaking, mothers are more likely to sacrifice themselves.

"Mom said if anyone would come to save us, it would probably be you."
He said softly.
"Your mom overestimated me. If I wasn't threatened, I wouldn't have set foot in the Kowloon Walled City again in my life."
Liu Zheng shook his head.
"But you still came."
Ah Piao's voice sounded.
"Mom!"
The boy exclaimed joyfully, stretching out his little hand to grasp at the air, only catching emptiness.
"Have you become a ghost?"
Liu Zheng asked.
