The person driving the cart was a dark-skinned youth—or maybe a youth, since he looked about the same age as Brother Wen from the Wen Family.
He wore a short coat with an open front that was clearly homemade with home-spun fabric, and had sandals woven from straw, likely self-made. His head was shaved, his face wind-burned, with cracked lips sticking together with scabs.
Upon meeting, the cart driver was more surprised than they were.
He hesitated as he stopped, looked at them, and asked, "Who are you?"
He wasn't speaking Mandarin, and only Wen Lan understood him on the spot.
