The Winter Fishing Hall emerged as a product of the industry's development following the rise of outdoor Black Pit fishing.
They built high mounds of earth around a one or two-acre pond and then covered it with a steel-framed roof.
The roof was then treated with translucent, insulating materials, similar in principle to a large greenhouse for vegetables.
This structure ensures that the temperature inside the greenhouse remains much higher than outside, preventing the pond from freezing. What was once untenable for outdoor fishing is now resolved; when winter cold made fishing impossible, brothers looking for a place to fish now have somewhere to go.
