Chapter 465 - Chapter 361 : Not Someone. Something!!

The fourth crack didn't finish.

Kagetsu felt it stop the way you feel a held breath stop — not release, just suspension, like whatever was doing this had changed its mind mid-motion. The pressure on the figure's wrist stayed exactly where it was. Not tightening. Not letting go.

"It's listening," the figure said, and its voice had dropped to something Kagetsu had never heard from it before — not fear exactly, something closer to the careful stillness of a man realizing the floor he's standing on isn't floor at all. "Somebody just said something it wanted to hear."

"Nobody said anything," Kushina snapped. "We've been standing here for ten seconds not breathing."

"Not you," the figure said. Its eye hadn't moved off the hand. "Him."

*

"I didn't say anything either," Kagetsu said. And then he understood, a half-second too late, exactly what the figure meant — because he had said something, six feet away, inside his own head, in the hallway-delay place where his voice went to reach the hand.

He'd asked it who it was.

He hadn't meant to ask out loud. He hadn't meant to ask at all, not really — it had come out of him the way a held-in wince comes out, involuntary, more reflex than intention. Who are you. Three words, sent down a very long hallway, and something on the other end had gone still to listen.

"I asked it something," he admitted. "Not out loud. I don't think it was out loud."

"That shouldn't matter," Orochimaru said, low. "Divergent Expression — is it reading anything new?"

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]

World: Naruto

Quality: Epic

Effect: Colony-linked chakra signature analysis, threat classification, and situational recommendation.

Ch. 361 — LIVE READ, POINT B (detached hand): Signature composition has shifted since last read. Kagetsu-baseline still present at 100%, unchanged. New secondary layer detected beneath it, previously unreadable — 0% match to every tracked entity (\"he,\" the splinter, the source candidate, the vessel, the doorway-thing, the memory-signature, Madara-consistent baseline). Partial structural match found instead: 71% correlation to the Ch. 334-336 wall-seal's own written grain — not to any person who has used the seal, but to the seal's construction pattern itself.

*

Nobody spoke for a moment.

"Say that part again," Minato said finally. "Slower."

"It's not matching a person," Orochimaru said, reading it off as it came in, his voice flattening the way it did when he was trying not to let his own reaction color what he said next. "It's matching the seal. The wall-seal Kushina completed. The one that opened the door in the first place."

"That's not possible," Kushina said — and then stopped herself, the way everyone in this corridor had learned to stop themselves lately, because the sentence had nowhere left to go and she knew it before she finished saying it.

"The seal doesn't have a signature," she said instead, working through it out loud. "Seals aren't alive. They're structure. Intent, written down, held in place. You don't get a match on a piece of architecture unless—"

She stopped again.

"Unless it was never just architecture," the figure finished for her, quiet. "Unless the door has always been able to want something on its own. And we've been calling it a door because that's easier to say than admitting we never checked."

*

"You built the second door," Kushina said, rounding on the figure now, something sharp and frightened under the anger. "You told him — Ch. 338, you asked his permission, you called it a request. If the door can act on its own, why did you need his permission for anything?"

"Because I never once controlled it," the figure said. "I only ever asked it to let me through. Every single time. I told myself that was consent because it felt like courtesy." Its remaining eye finally left the hand and found Kagetsu instead. "It was never courtesy. It was the truth. I don't own the door. Nobody who's ever used it has owned it. We've all just been guests it decided to let in."

The hand's grip on its wrist shifted again — not crushing now, not releasing either. Turning. Slow. Deliberate. Like it was repositioning for something that required a better angle.

"Then what does it want," Orochimaru said, "right now."

"I don't know," the figure said. "I've never once had to ask. It's always just opened for whoever was already standing in front of it. This is the first time in this whole story it's ever reached out and taken someone instead of waiting to be used."

*

"Ask it again," Minato said. He hadn't lowered the kunai. "Kagetsu — you reached it once already, by accident. Do it on purpose this time."

"I don't know how I did it the first time," Kagetsu said. "It wasn't a technique. It was just — asking. The way you'd ask a question you already half-expect not to get answered."

"Then ask it that way again," Minato said. "We don't have a second option standing around waiting for us to think of one."

Kagetsu closed his eyes, which felt useless — he wasn't seeing anything through them anyway, not really, not since the split — and reached back down the long hallway toward the place where his hand still was.

Who are you, he thought again, and this time he tried to mean it the way he'd meant it the first time, without performing the asking, without dressing it up as anything but exactly what it was.

Nothing answered in words. But the pressure on the far end shifted, briefly, into something that almost — almost — felt like attention. Like being looked at by something that had been looking at him the entire time and had simply never bothered confirming it out loud.

"It heard that," Kagetsu said, eyes still closed. "It's not answering. But it heard it."

"Divergent Expression," Orochimaru said. "Anything change?"

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression — continued]

No change to the 71% wall-seal correlation. No new identity classification obtained. Note: the correlation itself may be the answer already given — this system cannot rule out that "the wall-seal's own signature" is the most complete response this entity is capable of producing. It may not be withholding a name. It may not have one to give.

"That's worse," Kushina said flatly. "Tell me that's not worse."

"It's worse," the figure agreed.

*

Kagetsu felt the pull change.

Not stronger. Different — the patient certainty from before folding into something with direction now, purpose, like a hand that had been resting on a doorknob finally deciding which way to turn it. Down the long hallway, faint but unmistakable, he felt the grip on the figure's wrist begin to angle the arm. Not crushing. Guiding.

Toward the wall.

The dead end of Corridor Seven — the same stretch of concrete that had written its own seal into itself back in Chapter 334, that had opened once already on Kushina's palm and never fully closed since.

"It's taking him to the door," Kagetsu said, and his own voice cracked on the word him, because he still hadn't worked out whether he meant the figure or some other, colder version of himself standing at the far end of a hallway he couldn't see down. "It's not trying to hurt him anymore. It's trying to put him back."

"Back where," Kushina said, already moving, chains gathering at her shoulders.

"I don't know," the figure said, and for the first time all night, it sounded like it might actually be too afraid to guess out loud. "But I know what it means if it can do that without asking me first."

Orochimaru was moving now too, angling to get between the retreating figure and the wall without touching either — a position that had no good version of itself, he knew that, and went for it anyway. "If we can't safely touch the hand and we can't safely stop it walking, what's left?"

"Slow it down," Minato said. "Not stop. Slow. Buy Kagetsu time to ask it something more useful than a name."

"There isn't a more useful question," the figure said. "Believe me. I've had four months to think of one and I never got past why me."

Kushina's chains lashed out anyway — not at the hand, not at the figure, but low across the floor, meant to catch an ankle, buy a half-step, anything. They passed through empty air a foot short, the same clean failure Ch. 356's thread had produced against something the colony couldn't classify. She didn't try again. There was nothing left in the corridor to aim at that would hold.

The hand tightened one final time around the figure's wrist — not to break it now, but to hold it steady, the way you'd hold a nail before driving it home — and began, unhurried and unstoppable, to walk the figure backward toward the wall that had never fully finished being a door.

Behind Kagetsu's ribs, somewhere down that long, delayed hallway, something that wasn't the source candidate and wasn't "he" and wasn't anyone with a name yet finally answered the question he'd asked it.

Not in words.

In the sensation of the wall's ash-red grain, six feet away and rising, beginning to glow for the first time since Chapter 336.
