Chapter 463 - Chapter 359 : What The Cut Was For!!

Neither of them moved.

Not the way people go still when they're deciding something. The way a held breath goes still, right before it either releases or gives out.

Kagetsu couldn't feel his own hand anymore. He could feel what it was touching, and nothing else — no floor under his feet, no weight in his own chest, just the single point of contact between Kagetsu's fingers and the figure's wrist, expanding to fill everything.

[Divergent Expression: Passive Monitor — Contact Channel]

Trigger: Direct physical contact, source candidate (via Kagetsu) and split-faced figure.

Reading: Bidirectional signature bleed detected, both directions simultaneous — first confirmed two-way exchange recorded for either entity.

Content: Unreadable. Colony sensors register volume and duration of transfer only, not substance.

Duration: Ongoing at time of reading. No natural endpoint detected.

Recommendation: Do not attempt to interrupt physically without understanding the exchange's nature first. Confidence: low, offered as caution rather than certainty.

"Don't," Orochimaru said, to Kushina, to Minato, to himself as much as anyone, one hand raised, frozen halfway through a reach he'd already half-committed to. "Not yet. Not until we know what breaking it does."

Kushina's chains stayed taut, still looped around a wrist that had stopped fighting them, useless now for anything but holding a shape.

Minato hadn't drawn his kunai. There was nothing left to throw it at that wouldn't also hit the two people it might be meant to save.

"How long do we give it," Kushina said, not taking her eyes off Kagetsu's face for a second.

"As long as it takes for either of them to look like they're losing," Orochimaru said. "Not a second longer."

Inside the contact, Kagetsu saw it happen without seeing it happen — the way memory sometimes arrives whole instead of piece by piece.

He wasn't watching it so much as standing inside it, a passenger in someone else's recollection with no ability to look away, no ability to do anything but receive what was being shown.

A rooftop. Not this corridor. Somewhere open, somewhere with actual sky, wind moving through it in a way nothing in Corridor Seven had ever moved.

The figure, younger, unhunched, standing beside someone whose outline kept refusing to hold still — the same instability that had blurred every prior glimpse of the source candidate's own remembered shape, like trying to focus on something seen underwater.

They were laughing about something. He couldn't hear what. The sound reached him only as shape, not words, the specific rhythm of two people who trusted each other enough to laugh without checking first whether it was safe to.

It was the opposite of every version of the figure Kagetsu had ever met. No hunch. No caution. Just ease.

Then the sky changed.

Not weather. Something else — a presence arriving that the figure clearly recognized on sight, because its whole posture folded inward the instant it registered, the same hunch it still carried now.

The figure grabbed the source candidate's outline by the wrist.

Pulled.

And cut.

Not a blade. Not a jutsu Kagetsu had a name for.

Something more like a decision made with both hands — severing whatever kept the two of them connected, fast, deliberate, final, in the half-second before whatever had arrived on that rooftop could reach either of them. It looked less like an attack and more like the fastest, cruelest kindness Kagetsu had ever watched someone perform.

The figure's voice, from inside the memory, barely audible: "Not you too. Not this one."

Then nothing. The memory ended the way a rope ends when it's cut clean through — no fraying, no gradual give, just a sudden absence where connection used to be.

The contact broke.

Kagetsu staggered back a full step, his own body suddenly his own again, and would have gone down if Orochimaru hadn't finally closed the last of the distance in time to catch him.

The figure hadn't moved.

It stood exactly where it had been standing, staring at the source candidate's borrowed face with an expression Kagetsu had never once seen it wear — not through every prior chapter of careful composure, not even in the moments of genuine fear.

Not fear.

Grief that had been waiting a very long time for somewhere to go.

"You cut me off to protect me," the source candidate said. Kagetsu's voice, but something in the delivery had changed — slower now, less certain of itself than it had been a minute ago. "That's what actually happened. Not abandonment. Not a betrayal. You saw him coming and you—"

"I didn't have time to explain it," the figure said. "I had time to cut, and then he was already there, and explaining wasn't going to save either of us."

"You let me believe for years that you'd simply stopped caring," the source candidate said. "That would have been easier to carry than knowing you'd chosen it on purpose to keep me out of his reach."

"I know," the figure said. "I let you believe the easier version because the true one meant admitting I saw him and panicked, and panicking got you cut loose instead of saved properly. I've never been proud of how it happened. Only that it worked."

The source candidate was quiet for a moment, and in that quiet Kagetsu felt something shift through his own chest that didn't belong to him at all — something closer to grief than to anger, wearing his ribs like borrowed clothing.

"Four months," it said finally. "I spent four months circling this corridor, trying every door I could find, rehearsing exactly what I'd say to you the moment one finally opened. I built an entire version of you in my head that chose to walk away. It was easier to hate that version than to wonder about this one."

Something in Kagetsu's mark shifted.

Not the splinter. Not the memory-signature, still quiet somewhere beneath everything since Ch. 357.

The source candidate itself, its borrowed grip on Kagetsu's body wavering for the first time all chapter, uncertain in a way that felt almost like it no longer knew what it had come here to do. The certainty that had carried it through the last few minutes — through the taunting, through the grab, through everything — had nothing left to stand on now that the story it had been telling itself for months had turned out to be wrong.

"None of what I rehearsed accounted for this," it said, quieter now, almost to itself. "I don't know what I'm supposed to want anymore."

"Then don't say anything yet," the figure said, and took a step closer despite everything — despite its own weakened legs, despite Kagetsu's hand still technically wrapped around its wrist. "Let go of him first. Whatever's left to say, it doesn't need to happen through someone else's mouth."

For one long moment, it looked like it might actually work.

The grip on Kagetsu's body loosened — not fully, but enough that he felt his own fingers twitch, felt the faintest thread of control drift back toward him for the first time since "Finally" had been spoken. Orochimaru shifted his weight, ready to pull him clear the moment the opening widened even slightly further.

It never got the chance to widen.

Then the mark flared.

Not white. Not maroon.

A third color, one Divergent Expression had never logged before, spreading fast across Kagetsu's forearm like frost finding a windowpane — and the source candidate's borrowed voice cut off mid-breath, replaced by something that sounded like surprise.

"That's not me," it said, urgent now, all the softness from a moment ago gone. "Something's pulling through the same door. Right now. It's not—"

It didn't finish.

Kushina's chains, still looped uselessly around Kagetsu's wrist, went cold all at once — not slack, not broken, just suddenly, inexplicably cold to the touch, like the metal itself had forgotten what it was holding.

Kagetsu's vision went white, and when it cleared, he was looking at his own hand from several feet away, still holding the figure's wrist, while the rest of him stood somewhere he had never stood before.
