Chapter 394 - Chapter 394: The Cloak [2in1]

With a sharp whoosh, a red beam of light struck the man, sending him flying backward and crashing heavily into the wall.

It was Professor Snape—his reaction speed was astonishingly fast.

Wade had been a step slower, and his spell shattered the sink, causing bloodied water to spill across the floor.

Something white flew from the man's hands and rolled across the ground with a hollow clatter.

"What is that?"

Madam Pomfrey waved her wand and summoned the object into the air. The moment she got a clear look, she let out an involuntary shriek and her spell faltered. The white object dropped to the ground with a clang.

"Merlin—" Madam Pomfrey clutched her chest, and she looked as though she might faint. She murmured in disbelief, "Even Death Eaters wouldn't be this cruel…"

Wade looked down.

It was a sphenoid bone.

He had seen images of it before in the archives, but this was the first time he had encountered the real thing.

Professor Snape suddenly spoke with a cold voice. "Grey, if this is the person you wanted us to save, I fear you've overestimated the power of magic."

Following Snape's gaze, Wade saw a familiar yet unrecognizable severed head lying on the conveyor belt. The body was nowhere in sight.

Even the most advanced magic couldn't bring back someone who had not only died but had also been dismembered.

"No, not this person," Wade said hurriedly. "Follow me—the girl is this way!"

He led the two professors and raced through an illustrated storybook room before bursting into the first operating room—only to find two people inside.

A fat nurse was tidying up surgical instruments, while another man held a hose and was washing away the blood pooled on the floor.

They looked up in shock at the sudden intrusion, about to question them—

But before they could say a word, stunning spells struck them down instantly.

In the second operating room, Wade finally found the person they were looking for.

A little girl lay unconscious on the operating table with blood pooling beneath her limp body.

The doctors and nurses around her weren't trying to stop the bleeding.

Instead, they were carefully extracting a still-beating heart from her chest.

Beside them, an organ transfer case sat open, identical to the one Wade was carrying.

"Bastards!"

Madam Pomfrey let out a furious roar and her wand slashed through the air. A surge of violent magic exploded outward.

The medical staff in surgical gowns were blasted off their feet and crashed into the walls with pained cries. They collapsed in heaps, groaning—

Only to be struck by another round of stunning spells, plunging them into unconsciousness.

Professor Snape swiftly extended his wand and conjured an invisible thread that caught the still-beating heart, keeping it suspended steadily above the girl.

A moment later, he also found the girl's kidneys inside the storage box.

"I've never heard of anything like this before!" Madam Pomfrey's voice trembled slightly as she opened her medical kit. "This is… this is… even the devil wouldn't be this cruel!"

"She can still be saved, Poppy," Snape reassured her. "Focus on healing her. Leave the rest to me."

He handed over his most precious potions to Madam Pomfrey, then used a Levitation Charm to drag the unconscious individuals out of the room.

Before leaving, Snape turned to Wade and said, "Come with me."

"Yes, Professor."

Wade followed closely and watched as the levitating bodies were unceremoniously knocked into walls and metal shelves with loud thuds.

Soon, the room fell silent, broken only by the occasional flicker of Madam Pomfrey's spells.

As they passed by the previous operating room, Wade noticed the bloody footprints and smears on the floor. He thought of the boy they had been too late to save and sighed.

With a flick of his wand, he cast a Cleaning Charm, erasing the mess from the floor.

Then, Wade finally discarded the box he had been carrying all along, placing the extracted organs alongside the boy's severed head and the bone he had retrieved.

Snape found an empty room, knocked the unconscious individuals out again for good measure, bound them, and tossed them inside.

Then, he and Wade split up to search the rest of the area. They discovered a few others—some sleeping, some slacking off, some busy writing reports—and swiftly subdued them all.

"What will happen to them?" Wade asked.

"Azkaban will make room for them."

Seeing the hint of disapproval in Wade's expression, Snape added, "Trust me, that's worse than death… and in a place like that, they won't last long."

Wade nodded. Noticing that Snape had no intention of simply killing these people outright, he naturally had no objections.

Instead, he dragged the man with glasses out of the room and asked, "Professor, do you have any Veritaserum?"

Snape gave him a long, deep look. "What are you planning?"

"Interrogating this guy, of course." Wade answered matter-of-factly. "They definitely have more accomplices. This man seems to have some authority—he should know quite a bit."

Snape's expression turned slightly strange. He hesitated for a moment but ultimately just nodded. "Leave him to me. You stay here and protect Poppy and the girl."

"Alright." Wade agreed without hesitation.

He had no faith in leaving the follow-up investigation to the Ministry of Magic, but if it was in Snape's hands, there was nothing to worry about.

Snape was momentarily surprised by Wade's lack of resistance. He glanced at the boy, as if wanting to say something, but in the end, he remained silent and left with the man with glasses.

As Snape walked away, the blood on the floor stained his boots, leaving a trail of red footprints at the doorway.

Wade stared at the footprints. Suddenly, like a bolt of lightning, a series of images flashed through his mind—

When he had first flown in with Mabel, there had already been a similar trail of bloody footprints at the entrance.

And before that? What did we see?

A man lying dead on the ground, shot in the forehead, with a pair of fallen glasses beside him.

Some people look completely different with or without their glasses.

Now, seeing these footprints again, Wade finally realized—

The man with glasses Snape had just taken away… he had seen him once before.

Thinking of the gunshot wound on the man's forehead, Wade's expression became slightly serious.

However, Madam Pomfrey was still fully focused on treating Hailey, and Wade couldn't just abandon them.

The last two combat-capable magical dolls had been left to protect Hailey from before the time reversal. Mikael is strong, but his body of flames couldn't withstand cold guns.

He could incinerate the shooter in an instant, but—

"One cannot alter events that have already been observed in the past."

That was the fundamental rule of reversing time.

If such a change did occur, it wasn't as though the user of the Time-Turner would instantly die or suffer misfortune. The Ministry of Magic simply warned that it must never be done.

Wade suspected that breaking this rule would create a parallel timeline, effectively trapping the user in the newly formed reality.

After a brief moment of thought, Wade removed the metal-thread cloak he had been wearing and softly recited an incantation he knew all too well. Glowing lights cascaded onto the cloak.

Moments later, the metal-thread cloak "stood up." It wobbled as it took two steps forward, then glided a short distance before hopping back to Wade's side.

Since the cloak had been woven with copper and silver, it shimmered under the magic, as though it had been crafted from sunlight and moonlight, like an enchanted robe straight out of a fairy tale.

Wade then cast a Disillusionment Charm on it, causing the cloak to blend seamlessly with its surroundings with only its outline faintly visible.

Suddenly, the cloak bent its hood downward and began spinning in circles—almost like a puppy chasing its own tail.

"Stop playing around." Wade tapped the cloak with his wand. "You know what I need you to do."

The cloak, infused with Wade's thoughts, immediately straightened its posture and gave a small nod before vanishing in a blur, speeding off in the direction Snape had gone.

As for Wade, he frowned as he scanned his surroundings. Then, with a wave of his wand, he restored everything to match exactly what he had once seen.

Snape had no idea that the student behind him was worrying about his safety. But at that moment, Snape himself was thinking about Wade.

At times, he felt as if he could see the shadow of the Dark Lord in Wade—perhaps even someone colder, more ruthless.

Though Snape had never personally witnessed Voldemort's youth, through Wade, he could vividly imagine what kind of brilliant yet merciless young man the Dark Lord must have been.

But soon after, Snape would dismiss such thoughts as mere illusions. Wade was still the intelligent and upright student he had always been.

He reminded himself—young men, driven by a moment of fury, often talk of killing. Especially teenage boys, who barely grasp the true value of life and throw around the notion of death far too easily.

Just like himself. When he was younger, he had cursed James Potter and his gang every single day, sincerely wishing that they would all die horrible deaths at his hands.

Even now, that hatred has not faded.

Later, when he joined the Death Eaters and witnessed his comrades commit murder, Snape felt nothing in particular—neither the thrill that Bellatrix Lestrange indulged in nor any form of disgust or resistance.

Snape had once desperately sought the Dark Lord's favor, yearning to climb higher, to gain greater power.

Until that day… until the cold, lifeless body before him was the one he loved most…

The Potions Master shut his eyes tightly and pulled himself out of the painful memory.

He knew that Wade from the present timeline would soon arrive at this place. To avoid interfering, Snape first led the man with glasses away and found a secluded spot before dripping Veritaserum into his mouth.

The man's eyes fluttered open, hazy and unfocused.

"Tell me," Snape asked softly. "What are you doing here? Who is behind this?"

"We… we are conducting research on genetic editing… exploring the feasibility of granting humans magical genes… unlocking the secret to a wizard's longevity…"

Snape froze. This was an answer he had not expected—nor understood.

"What is genetic editing?" he asked.

The man replied in a flat, mechanical tone: "It is a revolutionary biotechnology proposed in recent years. Using gene-editing tools, we can precisely and efficiently modify specific sequences in an organism's genome, enabling genetic insertion or replacement, thereby altering its hereditary information."

"The majority of genes in humans and wizards are identical. We believe that ordinary people cannot use magic because certain genes in their bodies remain inactive."

"If we can isolate these magical genes, even ordinary people could be transformed into wizards. Even without magical genes, it may be possible to introduce and restructure them in future generations…"

Snape: "…"

Deciding to skip over the parts he didn't understand, he interrupted the man's lengthy explanation and got straight to the point. "Who ordered you to do this?"

"The leader."

"Who is the leader? What's their name? Where can I find them?"

"I… I don't know… The leader never appears before us…"

"Then how does he issue orders?"

"By email."

Snape took a deep breath. "Tell me everything you do know… For example, who is in charge of this island?"

The man's eyelids twitched. After a brief moment of confusion, he finally responded, "That would be Zeke, of course."

"Tell me about this Zeke—"

Before Snape could finish his sentence, he suddenly furrowed his brows and turned around.

Something was cutting through the air toward him. A… cloaked figure?

The Disillusionment Charm was not entirely effective in flight, allowing Snape to make out the outline of the cloak. Based on its size, he quickly recognized it as the one Wade had been wearing earlier.

Snape hesitated for a moment. The cloak was flying directly at him, but he wasn't sure whether he should dodge or catch it. That single moment of hesitation was all it took—the cloak landed right on top of him.

It moved nimbly, wrapping around Snape in an almost embracing motion.

Due to its length, Snape's upper body became hazy and indistinct, while his legs remained fully visible—creating a rather unsettling sight.

The man with glasses, under the influence of Veritaserum, remained unaffected by the commotion. His eyelids trembled as he continued answering the questions.

"Zeke... Zeke is a trusted aide of the higher-ups. I heard he was sent here because he offended a wizard within the organization… He doesn't understand technology at all, has a volatile temper, but at least he's generous with money…"

Snape tried to pull the cloak off but failed, managing only to yank the hood away from his face. However, his sharp ears caught a crucial detail—

"A wizard in the organization? Your group has wizards?"

"Of course! They are—"

BANG! BANG!

Before the man could finish speaking, a bullet pierced his forehead.

He fell straight backward, hitting the wall with a dull thud, his glasses slipping off. His mouth remained agape as blood trickled down from his nose.

Another bullet shot toward Snape's forehead, but the raised hood of the cloak blocked it just in time.

Snape staggered back two steps and swiftly moved his wand to cast a full Disillusionment Charm on himself. He blended into the surroundings along with the cloak.

Only now did he fully grasp what had just happened.

Now invisible, he silently moved away from his previous position, stepping into the shadows near the corner of the wall. From there, he saw a group of heavily armed soldiers escorting a man and a woman as they quickly approached.

"Who the hell was he talking to?" The ponytailed man snapped angrily. "Who did he leak the secret to?"

Two soldiers jogged cautiously to the corpse of the man with glasses, inspecting him before firing several shots into the empty space around them, shattering glass and lightbulbs.

"Report: No one's here."

"They must've escaped already." The woman in red frowned. "Apton was a traitor?"

"Of course! Didn't you see him meeting someone just now?"

The ponytailed man, Zeke, sounded both furious and relieved, eager to shift the blame for the base's failure onto someone else.

"No wonder, despite all the anti-wizard defenses we set up, someone still managed to sneak in and sabotage us! It's because an insider leaked our defensive layout and led the enemy right to us!"

The woman in red, Veronica, merely nodded noncommittally. She frowned and asked, "Apton was here… then what about the organs needed for the other side?"

"Forget about that!" Zeke cut her off decisively. "The magnetic field is compromised—escaping is the priority now. Tell the lab team to hurry up; I'm giving them five more minutes, no more!"

The group rushed upstairs, with one of them pressing on their earpiece to relay orders.

Snape silently observed them. Only after they had left the corridor did he levitate and follow them.

He had once learned the art of flight from Voldemort himself. Even without a broomstick, Snape can fly.

With the group gone, silence returned to the hallway.

Not long after, a Firebolt carrying Wade and Mabel sped through the corridor.
