After passing through the Forest of Death, Tōshirō arrived near a secluded stream.
Even though he was now allowed to leave the Forest of Death and move about freely, Tōshirō still preferred quiet places to train rather than using designated training grounds.
Tap tap tap...
With blue chakra attached to his feet, Tōshirō stepped onto the surface of the water. It was time for today's training. His hands swiftly formed seals, then he crouched down and pressed his right hand against the water:
"Ice Release: Ice Age."
In an instant, the stream froze into a hard, solid ice surface. Under the sunlight, the frost sublimated into a hazy mist, creating a unique and beautiful scene.
"Phew..."
Standing on the ice, Tōshirō let out a white puff of cold breath and smiled lightly:"Looks like it'll be hard to make much more progress in this area for now."
The reason Tōshirō just used Ice Release: Ice Age wasn't to show off — he was training his chakra release.
Enhancing a jutsu involves two main aspects: the nature transformation and the shape transformation of chakra.
But in fact, this is a rather general way of speaking.
More specifically, it can be broken down into: chakra release speed, release range, release distance, concentration, burst power, stability, form, control, advancement, and augmentation.
Chakra release speed, range, and distance are collectively referred to as chakra release.
These three terms are fairly self-explanatory.
Take Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique as an example. When Sasuke first learned this move, the flames were so small they could barely blow out a candle.
The technique was highly unstable, requiring continuous chakra output through the mouth to maintain even a basic fireball shape. The attack range was also extremely short—almost melee-range.
But when a master uses the Great Fireball Technique, it's not only powerful and fast, it can even detach from the mouth and shoot out like a projectile, functioning as a long-range attack.
Of course, mastering these three aspects alone doesn't mean all jutsu can have their power, range, or speed adjusted at will—there's also the matter of jutsu elasticity.
For instance, Fire Release: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique has much higher elasticity in release speed than the Great Fireball Technique. With the same amount of chakra, its speed would improve far more than the latter. Conversely, in terms of attack range, the Great Fireball Technique far outclasses Phoenix Sage Fire.
Another example is Fire Release: Majestic Destroyer Flame. Why was it so terrifying in Madara Uchiha's hands?
One reason is that the technique itself has a wide attack range. Another is that Madara's mastery of chakra release had reached a transcendent level, to the point where his fire jutsu needed an entire platoon casting Water Formation Wall to counter.
Tōshirō's Ice Release: Ice Age was developed based on these three aspects of chakra release.
He created Ice Age partly as a tribute to a certain navy admiral, and partly as a foundation for the ultimate ice jutsu to come — Ice Release Secret Art: Goddess of Dawn's Forgiveness.
According to the development philosophy of that dead penguin, if one wishes to unleash an attack that produces absolute zero-level cold—
—it requires many steps. For Tōshirō, training in Ice Age is essentially indirect training in chakra release. And now, he's almost mastered that aspect.
One part is hard to improve any further in the short term, while the other has already reached the required standard.
With chakra release mastered, only two challenges remain:
One is chakra concentration, and the other is chakra advancement.
Chakra concentration is easy to understand — it means compressing a substance without compromising its quality.
But the advancement of chakra attributes — this is the most crucial and also the most difficult step.
Take the fire attribute as an example: in the process of chakra attribute advancement, both the color and temperature of the chakra change.
For instance, Amaterasu's black flames are a manifestation of fire chakra pushed to its absolute limit.
Likewise, Purple Lightning and Black Lightning are advanced forms of lightning-style chakra.
What Tōshirō needs to do is advance his own ice-style chakra to this kind of level.
Once the ice he produces with Ice Release changes from white and transparent to a different color, it will signify that his chakra attribute has fully advanced.
However, reaching this level is something Tōshirō simply cannot achieve in a short amount of time, especially since he spent a considerable part of the last three years fusing with the Boil Release.
That said, there is a shortcut to reaching this level — and it involves the concept of chakra attribute absorption.
And chakra attribute absorption is tied directly to Ice Release: Ice Age.
The underlying principle is somewhat similar to Lightning Release Secret Art: Kirin — it requires a prerequisite setup.
Kirin relies on environmental conditions, and Tōshirō's technique also requires environmental factors.
While refining his own ice-style chakra, he also needs to absorb the surrounding cold air — only then can he activate this S-rank jutsu.
But this brings up a problem: in normal circumstances, where would Tōshirō find such an ideal cold environment to absorb frost and use Ice Release: Goddess of Dawn's Forgiveness?
Unless he's in the Land of Snow or the Land of Iron, places that are permanently covered in ice and snow, regular environments simply aren't cold enough.
With bad luck, he might even find himself fighting in a desert.
And unlike Kirin, which only needs a Great Fireball to create an updraft and requires very little chakra afterward to guide lightning, Tōshirō's Goddess of Dawn's Forgiveness is completely different.
He not only needs to absorb frost, but must also refine a massive amount of ice-style chakra simultaneously.
That's because relying solely on his own chakra refinement would be too slow to keep up with the jutsu's activation.
Therefore, in order to alter the environment, he must first use Ice Release: Ice Age.
But that leads to two more issues:
First: Tōshirō doesn't even know any basic chakra absorption jutsu — let alone chakra attribute absorption.
Second: After casting a wide-range Ice Release: Ice Age to alter the climate, Tōshirō's chakra would be in such a depleted state that there'd be no way to follow it up with Goddess of Dawn's Forgiveness.
To cast Ice Release: Goddess of Dawn's Forgivenessperfectly, the complexity is staggering just thinking about it.
Tōshirō let out a long, heavy sigh.
Overall, this is a supreme Ice Release technique conceptualized by combining Wind Release: Rasenshuriken and Lightning Release: Kirin.
If he ever successfully uses it, its power will likely surpass either of those two ultimate jutsu. But in terms of complexity, it's also far more troublesome than both.
Tōshirō shook his head — haste makes waste. He decided to put the chakra advancement matter aside for now and focus on chakra concentration first.
At this thought, he extended his right hand, palm up, and as he slowly raised it, a swirling blue vortex formed a few centimeters above his palm, condensing into an ice-blue sphere.
Ice Release: Rasengan, named Ice Wheel Orb.
Next, Tōshirō's training would focus on compressing this ice sphere.
