Chapter 1 - prologue

My name is Mordred. I am a 25-year-old man currently studying to become a bioscientist in college. It is my dream to find cures for biological diseases. However, I must admit that I have darker aspirations related to bioscience, such as finding ways to push humanity further up the evolution chain. I want to prevent diseases like cancer or others from affecting our species in the future. Unlike characters such as Orochimaru from Naruto, I have more restrictions; I would at least require my subjects to sign a contract stating that I could use their bodies for scientific research. I wouldn't resort to kidnapping people left and right to further my studies—after all, that sort of thing got Orochimaru banished from his village, and I certainly don't want to be hunted down like a rabid dog.

I also admit that I am a "weeb," or a "cultured man," as some prefer not to be called that. I often watch anime where magic exists because I have always thought that mixing it with science would be extremely fun. Imagine if you could combine a particle accelerator with magic that accelerates anything within it; you would have a truly remarkable piece of technology. My studies focus on biotechnology, and I couldn't help but be fascinated by a particular concept I encountered while watching anime: sacred gears from "High School DxD." Technically, the combination of technology, magic, and bioengineering makes sense, especially when you consider the high-tier sacred gears. For example, the Longinus were created from the body parts of legendary monsters and rare materials—take the Boosted Gear and Divide Dividing, both made from the Red Dragon Emperor of Domination, Ddraig, and the White Dragon Emperor of Supremacy, Albion.

Like any man of culture—or weeb, depending on your preferred term—my friends and I often discuss various anime and our approaches to them. In the case of DxD, my answer would practically always be the same: I would research how to recreate the Evil Piece system, aiming not to reincarnate someone as a different species but rather to incorporate the properties of those species into the human body.

However, there are aspects of the world of DxD in which I would be interested without involving bioscience. Soon, I became consumed by my thoughts, and when I looked around, I realized I was in a complete and utter white void. I felt very confused.

"What the hell?" I said out loud, and as I turned around, I heard a voice behind me. I saw a woman who was around 7 feet tall, with what I could only describe as unrealistically large breasts and hips. She had long golden hair, a revealing outfit, and glowing golden eyes.

"Well, I'm surprised a living human managed to find themselves in my domain."

I stared at her for a moment, blinking. Then I turned away, trying to find an exit from whatever this place was. Sure, she was extremely attractive—definitely eye-catching—but I had better things to do, like figuring out where I was and leaving. I needed to get home and prepare for my exams tomorrow. Then I heard her scream at me like a child who was being ignored.

"Hey! Don't ignore me like I don't exist!"

I looked back at her with slight annoyance, and she appeared quite pouty.

"Okay, lady, who are you, and how the hell do I leave this place?"

She stared at me, blinking, and her eyes flashed golden before she seemed completely shocked. For a moment, she looked confused before bursting into laughter.

"Oh my God, you don't even know how you got here! That's a first. Judging from your memories, you were so lost in thought that you didn't even notice you died. I don't know whether to be impressed or just sad for you."

I blinked for a few seconds as I processed that I was dead. I shrugged and sat down, wondering where I was now.

"You don't even seem surprised that you're dead. How is that possible? Most people freak out when they realize they're dead."

I nodded quietly, understanding what she meant. I quietly replied, "What's the point of freaking out? I'm already dead, as you said. Sure, you could be lying, but given that this place doesn't look like anything human-made, I can't really say whether you are or not. Since I'm already dead, why complain about it?"

As I spoke, I noticed her looking at me with a dumbfounded expression. I simply tilted my head and raised an eyebrow.

"Are you kidding me, mortal? No one in their right mind should just accept dying like this!"
