Ben texted me back. I arranged to meet him at Together Forever. I contacted Wyla for a ride. A knot grew in my stomach as I scanned the area and spotted King's sedan parked just off company property.
I had no doubt he would follow me to the nightclub, so I arranged for Min to meet me at the door with a couple of bouncers.
It was hard to sit in the back of Wyla's car, biting my tongue when all I wanted to do was blurt out everything I knew, which was precisely what Bea would have done.
"How goes my background check?" Wyla asked. "Should I give my boss two weeks' notice?"
"We've not even discussed salary."
"I trust you to treat me right. I've seen the tips you leave me."
"Background check is completed. You can stop worrying about it."
"Did I pass?"
"You passed."
"Good to know."
"Listen, can we talk?"
"I thought we were," Wyla said. "Are you letting me go? Listen, my dad, I know he wasn't exactly a good guy, but that has nothing to do with me."
