"That's not true. We haven't made any marriage arrangements with the Yue Family, and we never took any bride price." Xu Qinghe said firmly as soon as he heard 'bride price'.
Ji Ying sensed something was off, instinctively thinking of how Xu Qinghu had been especially helpful around the house these past couple of days.
"Xu-ge doesn't believe you'd marry Nianhua off to Yue Hongliang either. That guy's already had two wives die on him." Yao Feng chimed in, adding, "That's why Xu-ge got into a fight with them."
"Exactly. Maybe it's all just a big misunderstanding." Cai Gen said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Uncle Xu, Aunt Xu, we've got to head home, so we'll get going first."
"You two should stay for dinner." Ji Ying invited them; after all, they'd gone to the trouble of carrying Xu Nianji back from the brick factory, which was no easy task.
"No, thanks, my mom's waiting for me at home."
Yao Feng and Cai Gen made their excuses and left.
