"Bang bang bang!"
Late at night, a series of knocks startled the two awake. Jin Meng turned her head, rubbing her sleepy eyes, and looked at Xia Lu, "It's so late, who could it be?"
Xia Lu didn't speak, lifted the quilt, and got out of bed. She didn't wear slippers as she tiptoed to the door, listening carefully to the sounds outside.
There used to be a peephole on Jin Meng's front door to see visitors outside, but it got accidentally covered up by a decorative character during the New Year and was never fixed, leaving the view outside pitch black now.
Xia Lu leaned against the door, listening as the knocking grew louder, her heart pounding in sync.
Jin Meng emerged from the bedroom in slippers, hearing the noise, and frowned. "Crazy, knocking on doors so late. It's probably some neighbor who drank too much and got the wrong door." She reached for the handle but was stopped by Xia Lu.
"What if it's a bad person?"
