The unfinished sentence still hung over the chamber like a blade nobody wanted to touch.
Ryu Hamura stood at the open end of the long table. Dan Hamura remained half a step behind him and to his left, calm as stone, with his hands resting at his sides.
The chamber had not yet found its voice.
"Is he going to say it?" Shikaku thought, his expression remaining perfectly neutral. "Withthe civilian representatives present."
The civilian representatives sat stiffly along the far side of the table. They had not known Minato Namikaze. Not personally. They only saw the strange reaction spreading among the older shinobi and understood that something important had almost been revealed.
"The boy's lineage," Ryu began.
Danzo cut across him before the name could land.
"Stop it right there, kid."
The elder did not raise his voice. He simply occupied the silence Ryu had created.
The clan heads who had leaned slightly towards Ryu settled back. It was a small movement, almost invisible, but Ryu saw it. Men who had spent decades around power understood when someone had drawn a boundary.
"Right," Ryu thought. "That's the line he won't let me cross. Noted."
The room's attention drifted to Dan Hamura.
Accusatory looks moved between the grandfather and grandson.
Many thoughts circulated in the room.
Did Dan Hamura tell him?
How else would the boy know?
Did the old man break the village's greatest secret?
Dan did not step forward.
"For the second time, I did not tell him anything," he said. "The boy is sharp enough to connect the dots himself."
"You would have to be blind not to. An idiot could connect these dots if he met Naruto in person," Ryu said. "You think you hid it from the other villages? For how long?"
No one answered.
Ryu met Danzo's eye.
"Fine. I'll keep it to myself if that is what you want."
It was a calculated surrender. Ryu then planted his next trap.
"By the way, send Tatsuma my regards when you next speak to him. Or don't. I'll deliver them myself."
The clan heads drew in breath they had not meant to hold.
Ryu continued, "Tell him not to feel bad about failing the mission. These things happen."
He named the failed attempt on his life as if he were discussing an unpaid bill.
Dan Hamura's gaze shifted across the table towards Danzo.
Danzo gave a cold look with no words attached.
Ryu looked at Dan and Hiruzen.
Dan and Hiruzen both thought, "Go on, boy. I have your back."
Hiruzen Sarutobi remained motionless at the head of the table. He knew exactly what Tatsuma had done. The corner of his mouth twitched with the barest hint of amusement.
"Clever boy," Hiruzen thought. "Everyone in the room knows you were attacked in the Land of Rivers. Now you have painted Danzo as the villain. It's not much but enough to shift a few more votes in your favour."
Among the clan heads, Shibi Aburame sat with a troubled expression.
"What have you done, Tatsuma?" Shibi thought quietly.
Ryu turned towards him.
"I have no qualms with the Aburame clan, Lord Shibi," Ryu said. "Tatsuma stopped being your responsibility when he joined Root."
Danzo's single eye did not flicker.
He thought, How does he know his name?
Tatsuma's name did not exist in most records. Not under that name. Not in any place a child should have found it.
Ryu looked directly at Shibi.
"As long as the Aburame clan never supports that man," he said, nodding once towards Danzo, "we are cool."
Shibi looked at Ryu and nodded. Maybe Ryu just earned one more vote.
Danzo's face remained expressionless. The exchange had fallen within his expectations. He had a counter ready.
Ryu's tone became flat and unhurried.
"Also tell Tatsuma that the next time I see him, it will be the last."
Koharu Utatane, who had been silent through the opening exchange, found her opening.
"Nonsense," she said. "You have no proof of any of this. Baseless accusations like this will not be tolerated."
"Proof?" Ryu repeated. "You always act on proof?"
Koharu's mouth tightened.
"You barred me and my clan from contacting Naruto without discussing it with me or my grandfather," Ryu said. "You did it without any proof that I, my clan, or anyone associated with us posed a danger to Naruto. You did it without proof that we had any ulterior motive."
He reached into his vest, pulled out two scrolls, and placed them on the table.
Hiruzen's crimson seal caught the light.
"This is your earlier order, and this is Lord Hokage's stay on the order," Ryu said.
He placed one hand on the table.
"I stand here because you acted without a proper hearing or evidence."
His eyes passed across Koharu, Homura, and Danzo.
"Such a one-sided decision is not in good faith or in the interest of Naruto or the village. So I intend to answer the charges that drove it, at last, to the faces of the people who made them."
Koharu's mouth hardened into a line.
"We acted for Naruto's wellbeing," she said. "For the village's best interests. Who are you to question us?"
Ryu laughed once.
The clan heads who had been leaning forward eased back a fraction.
"Where was this concern when the truth about him leaked to every nobody in the village?" Ryu asked.
"The Nine-Tails' host was walking around with a target on his back, and the people responsible now want to call it protection."
He swept his gaze across the table.
"A child who knows nothing about himself is hated by strangers who only know that he is a jinchuriki. Is that the best interest you spoke of? You did a bang-up job shielding Naruto."
Ryu paused.
"And now you have the gall to claim you acted for Naruto's good."
"These old bastards," Ryu thought. "They think I am easy and will be defeated by words."
He let the silence settle before speaking again.
"This village has people who can read minds," he said. "If Naruto's identity leaked, someone could have traced it...But no one did it."
Inoichi Yamanaka sat still, his face carefully controlled.
Ryu continued, "Maybe they already knew the answer and chose not to investigate. Maybe the person who started the leak was too important to accuse."
His eyes locked on Danzo.
"Maybe the leaker is someone high up," Ryu said. "Maybe they are sitting in this room."
Danzo met his stare without flinching.
His hands rested on the table where everyone could see them.
He made no movement that could be called a threat.
Down the bench, the civilian representatives leaned together and murmured under their breath. They were younger than most of the people around them, weaker in influence, and painfully aware of the man Ryu had just looked at.
At the previous sitting, they had raised their hands because of Danzo.
Now the boy they had voted against stood in front of Danzo and said the parts people preferred to leave unspoken.
Their voices died quickly.
Ryu turned the full weight of his attention back towards the elders.
"You failed him," he said. "His identity leaked, and you did nothing to stop it. Do you have an answer to that?"
His gaze moved from one elder to the next.
"I'm listening."
The room answered with silence.
The clan heads held still.
The elders who had controlled this chamber for decades had no rebuttal to place on the table. Any defence would admit that Naruto's suffering had been real. Any denial would sound ridiculous after what Ryu had said.
Hiruzen watched the council's silence harden into something visible. He closed his eyes because he was equally guilty of these accusations as anybody else seated in the room.
"The boy is handling it so well," Dan thought.
Homura Mitokado gave a slow blink and looked towards the Third Hokage.
His face showed nothing, but his thoughts were already moving.
The council could not leave this accusation unanswered. Not today, perhaps. The boy had too much momentum and too many eyes on him, and Hiruzen was not stepping in to rescue them.
But later, when the doors were closed and the room was smaller, Homura would force the discussion back to procedure. Back to authority. Back to who had the right to question the elders of Konoha.
For now, he said nothing.
The quiet settled over the chamber. Ryu did not try to fill it. He let them sit in what they had earned.
Dan Hamura watched his grandson from behind.
The council expected a child to become furious, loud, reckless, or desperate to prove himself.
Ryu had done something worse. He had spoken clearly, then left the elders alone with the truth.
Ryu stood at the end of the table. He had come prepared to bury them in words. He had not expected the grave to be so quiet. And he had not expected the silence to do more damage than the words ever could.
