Chapter 278 - Over Before It Begins

MHA Universe, Earth, Japan, Musutafu.

"Okay, you can let it go, Tatsuo." Alfonzo said with a satisfied smile on his face.

Currently, all the students of Class 1-A, minus Tenya, who had been sent back to the U.A. main building to inform Nezu of the invaders at the USJ, were standing behind Tatsuo, who was locking the space, Alfonzo, who was setting up the enclosure for the incoming threat, Shota, and Anan at the top of the stairs leading down to USJ's central plaza.

And after seeing Alfonzo work, they all stared at the central plaza with a level of awe. And the one who showed the biggest reaction was Denki, who like Alfonzo, had some measure of control over electricity.

"Incredible." Denki muttered breathlessly while looking at what Alfonzo had accomplished in such a short time with his [Quirk].

Meanwhile, Tatsuo, following Alfonzo's order, nodded his head before lowering his hand, which was still raised in a post-snap position.

"Alright." Tatsuo said once his hand was lowered to his side once again.

As soon as Tatsuo released the spatial lock, the small mist cloud at the center of Alfonzo's enclosure began to expand explosively. However, thanks to Tatsuo's fine control, it never expanded past the enclosure that Alfonzo setup.

Shortly afterwards, as soon as the mist spread to its limit, it rapidly retracted, forming the figure of Kurogiri. On top of that, as the mist pulled back, the figures of villains appeared in the space that the mist occupied not too long ago, as well.

"Finally!" Tomura, the last of the villains to appear, exclaimed impatiently. He then turned towards Kurogiri and began berating him petulantly. "You took too long, you idiot! I don't know why Sensei trusts you so much. You're useless!"

However, while Tomura threw his tantrum, Kurogiri and the other villains swiveled their heads from side to side to get a sense of their surroundings. And as they noticed the situation they were in, their expressions dropped. Apparently, things would not be as easy as Tomura said they would when they were recruited.

"Now is not the time for that, Tomura-Kun." Kurogiri said, his tone as polite as ever. "It would seem there have been some unforeseen circumstances.""

"What the fuck are you talking about?" Tomura shrieked indignantly.

Instead of replying verbally, Kurogiri only extended his right arm and gestured around him, signaling Tomura to take a look for himself.

Though he found Kurogiri's lack of an explanation annoying, Tomura followed Kurogiri's gesture and looked around. And just like the other villains, his expression began to darken when he saw his situation.

"What the fuck is this?" Tomura asked angrily as he noticed the long pieces of rebar piercing the ground at specific intervals around the group of villains. "Why are things like this?"

"Oh, you can thank us for that~!" Alfonzo replied to Tomura's question while smiling brightly and waving at the group of villains. "You see, Tatsuo noticed your little spatial movement and stopped it long enough for me to make a cage for all of you. Pretty impressive, right?"

Immediately, Tomura's head snapped in the direction of Alfonzo's voice, finally realizing that there were more people at the top of the stairs in front of him. And when he realized who Alfonzo was, his eyes widened in both surprise and anger.

"Hey! What are you doing here?" Tomura shouted impotently. "No one said you would be here! This isn't fair! You're not playing by the rules! You're a cheater!"

"Oh, now that sounds interesting." Shota said as he stepped forward to stand in front of the rest of the group. "So, someone told you that we would be here today? Mind telling us who?"

Realizing that he had said too much in his anger, Tomura immediately shut his mouth. Then, he turned his head away like some kind of tsundere.

"What are you talking about.?" Tomura asked sharply. "You must have misheard."

Though there was no smacking sound accompanying it, Kurogiri face-palmed hard enough to disperse the mist making up his right hand when he heard Tomura's transparent denial. He then turned to Tomura to explain how the situation was even worse than Tomura thought it was.

"Tomura-Kun, I have more bad news." Kurogiri said politely. "It would seem that I can't [Warp] us out of here. The space is locked once again."

Tomura's eyes widened once again. Then, he snapped his head towards the top of the stairs and focused his glare on Tatsuo, who was smiling nonchalantly.

"This is your doing, isn't it?" Tomura asked angrily.

"Yeah, it is." Tatsuo replied with a gracious nod. "It seems that mist guy can't hold a candle to me."

"I see…" Tomura replied as his eyes narrowed. "Well then, once we put you down, we'll be free to come and go as we please. Hold on… Where is All Might? He was supposed to be here, wasn't he?"

"You know a lot more than you're supposed to." Shota said, his eyes narrowing as he glared at Tomura. "It seems we'll have to have a long talk after we've arrested all of you."

"Ahahahahaha!" Tomura burst into loud, unhinged laughter as soon as he heard Shota's insinuation. "You think you can stop us from leaving? You don't have what it takes. Nomus, kill everyone except for that kid locking space. We'll take him with us when we leave."

Immediately, the two inhuman beings standing behind Tomura and Kurogiri stepped forward. And when everyone got a good look at them, they recoiled in shock.

The first of the two Nomus was a massively muscular being whose height and build rivaled All Might's. Its body was mostly covered in a black bodysuit. However, the most jarring part of its appearance was the fact that its brain was completely visible through a clear dome that replaced its skull.

The other Nomu was just as tall as the first. However, its body was much leaner while wearing an ultramarine-colored bodysuit. Clearly, this one was built for speed and agility. On top of that, its hands were more like the talons of a bird than those of humans. Also, if one were to look closely, they would notice that its arms were longer than normal for its build. And like the first Nomu, its brain was also completely visible.

*Zap!*

Yet, before either Nomu could step out of the enclosure, Alfonzo flicked his right index finger. When he did, an arc of electricity shot out from the tip of the finger and struck one of the pieces of rebar sticking out of the ground. Immediately afterwards, an arc of electricity jumped the closest piece of rebar before continuing onto the next. And that process continued before completely enclosing the villains and the Nomu inside a wall of fast-moving, high-voltage electricity.

"Actually, if it's all the same to you, I'd rather you guys stayed in there." Alfonzo said in a cheerful tone. "Something tells me that those big guys are a little too much for most of the students to handle. And I wouldn't want any of them to get hurt on my first day as a teacher. It wouldn't look too good on my resume, you know?"

Despite Alfonzo's actions, neither of the Nomu stopped moving, charging straight into the electric current.

*Zap~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!*

And just as expected, they were both electrocuted, coming to a complete stop at the edge of the enclosure. The scent of burning, rotten meat wafted through the area, causing many of both the students and villains to cover their mouths in an attempt to not vomit.

"That smell." Alfonzo muttered while lightly sniffing the air. "Those things… They're not human."

"What do you mean?' Anan asked, the only one not bothered by the scent as her helmet filtered the air for her.

"He means the smell ." Tatsuo explained. "That's the smell of burning, rotten meat. The kind that's way past its expiration date."

"Yeah, and living people can't possibly have that kind of cent." Alfonzo added.

"Then… Are you saying those are reanimated corpses?" Shot asked, a clear expression of disgust on his face.

"Probably." Alfonzo replied. "Oh, looks like this isn't enough to stop them."

And just as Alfonzo said, despite the fact that they were enduring high-voltage currents running through their bodies, the two Nomu were slowly moving forward, trying to escape the range of the electricity.

"Well, we should just take down the masterminds." Tatsuo said with a shrug as he shifted his gaze to Tomura and Kurogiri. "I'm sure if we put them down, then those things will at least be more inclined to deal with us rather than everyone else."

"And how are we supposed to do that with Static's electric fence?" Anan asked curiously.

"Like this." Tatsuo replied with a grin ass he [Blinked] from where he stood.

"Don't move on your own." Shota said in an irritated tone, despite knowing it was already too late.

At the same time, Tatsuo appeared among the villains. More specifically, right behind Tomura and Kurogiri, surprising all the villains who could see him from their positions. Then, before anyone could react or warn Tomura and Kurogiri, Tatsuo grabbed Tomura by the back of his head and…

*Boom!*

… slammed him face first into the ground hard enough to create a small crater.

"You're the one who disintegrated the main gate." Tatsuo said quietly into the unconscious Tomura's ear. "I don't' know what you're [Quirk] does exactly. But it's probably best not to give you a chance to use it. So, you had to go down first."

*Swish!*

*Bang!*

In the next instant, using the back of Tomura's head as a hand hold, Tatsuo sprung up into a single-handed handstand. At the same time, a fist made of blackish-purple mist slammed through the spot where Tatsuo's back was before smashing into the floor.

"That wasn't very nice." Tatsu said while balancing on the back of Tomura's head. "You need to be punished."

"Release Tomura-Kun." Kurogiri, the one who just tried to punch Tatsuo in the back, said in a dark tone.

"No, I don't' think I will." Tatsuo replied nonchalantly.

*Swish!*

Tatsuo then spun on his hand and flung his right foot at Kurogiri's torso. Yet, instead of sending the human-shaped cloud of mist flying, Tatsuo's foot simply passed through him, clothing and all.

"It's useless." Kurogiri said as he raised his right hand and pointed it at Tatsuo. "Since this spatial lock is your doing, once you're unconscious, we'll be free to leave."

'And take you with us.' Kurogiri thought, finishing his last sentence.

*Bang!*

Yet, before Kurogiri could attack again, Tatsuo's other leg whipped around and landed on the metal collar around his neck and shoulders. However, instead of turning to mist like the rest of his body, this time Tatsuo's kick landed with great force.

"Gahh!" Kurogiri grunted in pain as he was lifted off his feet and sent flying.

*Bang!* *Bang!* *Bang!* *Bang!* *Bang!*

Kthe collar being a vulnerable spot was not the only surprising thing about that exchange. What surprised the onlookers even more was the fact that when Tatsuo kicked the collar, Kurogiri's [Quirk] was seemingly shut down, as well. The evidence was the fact that when Kurogiri slammed into the surrounding villains, said villains were also sent flying along with him. And unfortunately for them…

*Zap~~~~~~~~!*

"Ahh~~~~~~~~~~~~~!*

… the space inside of Alfonzo's enclosure was rather tight. As a result, one of the villains near the edge of the enclosure was forced into the electric current. And because all of the villains, including Kurogiri, were in contact with each other, they were all shocked together, leaving all of them in a smoking, twitching, pile of electrocuted villains.

"Eww!" Tatsuo muttered while fanning the air in front of his face. "There's another dead guy in here. I bet it was that mist guy."

*Swish!* *Swish!* *Swish!* *Swish!*

Though the villains were surprised to see Kurogiri taking damage, as they had tried to attack him at least once when they were recruited, it did not take them long to snap back to their senses. As a result, they all lunged towards Tatsuo to try and take him down.

Fingers that elongated into whips, fists hardened into stone, blades growing from forearms, all manner of [Quirks] were activated to attack Tatsuo. Yet, not a single attack landed on him. And it was not because Tatsuo showed off some inhuman-level of agility. Instead, the reason was even simpler.

He simply was not there anymore.

"Whoa! That was dangerous." Tatsuo said from the top of the stairs leading down to the central plaza.

At the same time, the numerous attacks that were aimed at Tatsuo landed. However, because Tatsuo had [Blinked] away, the attacks landed on the closest things to them. Namely, other villains.

As a result, the sounds of attacks landing and villains crying out in pain echoed over the area. Those sounds were then accompanied by bodies hitting the ground and villains whimpering in pain.

Meanwhile, the rest of the villains, those who were either too far away to attack with their close-range [Quirks] or who were too slow to act, could only stare up at the group of students and teachers who were looking over them from the top of the stairs.

"You know, that was kinda cruel, Eraser." Alfonzo said, breaking the relative silence with a smile. "You could have stopped all those guys from using their [Quirks] when they attacked Tatsuo. So, why didn't you?"

Though Alfonzo asked that question with a smile, that smile did not reach his eyes. And it was clear to anyone watching that he was not happy with the fact that Shota did not activate his [Erasure Quirk], which was capable of stopping anyone from activating their [Quirks] as long as he could see them and keep his eyes open.

In response, Shota only rolled his eyes. The reason he did not activate his [Quirk] was simple. He was in shock after seeing how easily Tatsuo took down a group of villains. And when he thought to do so, he thought better of it because he knew that Tatsuo could get himself out of the situation he found himself in by simply [Blinking] away.

Instead, Shota turned towards the two Nomus, who were still pushing their way through the electric current.

"It looks like they have a high-level regeneration [Quirk]." Shota said as he gazed at the Nomus. "I think they are a better target for my [Quirk] than those small fry."

"Fair enough." Alfonzo replied with a shrug. Clearly, the fact that Shota did not try to help Tatsuo not bothering him as much as he made it seem.

With that, Shota reached up to the goggles hanging around his neck. Then, he put them on properly. And as soon as he did, he glared at the Nomus while activating his [Quirk], which caused his eyes to glow red.

Immediately afterwards, all the Nomus' forward momentum came to a complete and utter stop. On top of that, the damage they were receiving from fighting through the electric current stopped regenerating, as well, before they eventually fell to the ground, twitching like the other villains who were forced into contact with the current.
