The Escape:(1772)
I could hear the cooing of the green doves as I sat in the courtyard with my daughter. Today I was teaching her the language of the British due to evolving climate of this land. She had already learned many French words and she was learning English even quicker. Vellacci was an extremely intelligent girl at the age of 2 years old, she would regularly outperform children double her age in learning. I am sure she would be a great queen one day. She will not just be a scholar but will have the upbringing of a warrior just as I had.
It was a magnificent day, the sun's glory shone brightly and the air was more temperate than usual. However the weight of this day contrasted with the pleasant weather. The battle that my husband was fighting would determine the fate of my our kingdom, as much as I had faith in my husband's capability and his history of victories, I felt a pang of doubt in my heart. What if he were to fall? No! I can't think that way, he will be victorious! Goddess Korravi (Durga in Tamil) will give him victory on this day. I was brought out of deep thought when I heard my daughter calling my name repeatedly.
Amma(Tamil for mother)...Amma...AMMA!
"Sorry chellum(Tamil for Darling), I was not listening clearly, can you repeat what you said?"
"What does cross mean?"
A cross is.....
Before I could I finish one of the maids came running into the courtyard. She looked visibly distressed and weary as she met my eyes from a distance.
"Your Majesty!"
She ran toward me without stopping in her weariness. What could be the matter that she was running with this much urgency.
"Your Majesty, I have a message." She said as her eyes glanced toward Vellacci.
I understood the message would be best discussed in private.
I turned to my daughter and smiled at her.
"Vellacci, amma has to talk with the maid, you stay here."
"Yes amma, but don't take too long."
I smiled at her, always eager to learn more.
I walked with the maid to the end of the court yard where she could deliver the message without my daughter overhearing.
"What is the message Shalini?"
"Your highness...it pains me to inform you that the king has fallen in battle..."
Time stood still for me as I took in her last words, the king is dead, my husband is dead. A crashing wave of sadness filled my heart as the truth became apparent. The man I love is gone. Tears were forming in my eyes as I struggled to hold them back.
"I am sorry for your loss your highness, but this is not the time to grieve, the messenger from the battlefield also told that our army has been defeated and the British are already near the city."
From shock to sadness and now fear quickly filled my heart. Today was the darkest day of my life, my husband is gone and the Britishers will soon if not now encroach upon the city. What do I do? Do I offer myself up to the officers? I heard tales of Indian queens bedding British officers once the king was defeated. I know if I relinquish my throne and lie down with the officer, my daughter's life would be spared, if I refuse they would kill her. No, I have to avenge my husband, I cannot betray the man I love by sleeping with the ones who killed him. I had to take a chance, even if it is low.
Without a moment to lose I quickly ran to my daughter, and picked her up and placed her on my right hip.
"Amma what happened why are you carrying me?"
"Vellacci, I will explain later, now whatever you do, do not talk loudly for the rest of the day."
"I will amma, my lips are closed until you tell me to talk again."
She was such a sweet and innocent girl, how could I possibly explain the situation to her, how could I tell her that her father died and her life might be at stake. I can't be thinking about these things, I have to escape and build any alliance. I quickly went to my chambers and placed my daughter on the bed. I grabbed my sword and dagger with their scabbard and wore them on my hips. I looked at my daughter and I could see that she understood something serious has happened. She kept her promise and remained silent. Then I heard footsteps nearing my chamber, it must be members of the royal court. It was Vikram, an advisor and confidant of the king.
"Rani(Queen in Tamil) Velu, the situation is dire, the British have entered the city and it will only be a matter of time before they reach the royal palace."
Every second was crucial, my daughter and I will make it through this day at all cost.
"Vikram, my daughter and I will leave city and look for alliances, we will return one day and liberate our people."
"I understand your highness, I would not bear it if you were to be disgraced by those white dogs!"
"Make haste your majesty, a horse has been prepared and is awaiting your arrival at the end of the secret passage."
"Thank you Vikram, I am forever in your debt."
"Come Vellacci, we have to leave the palace."
Without questioning my faithful daughter ran to me and took my hand. Vikram led us to the secret tunnel, one of the guards handed me a ignited torch. We arrived at the entrance and I could tell my daughter was afraid of entering.
"Vellacci, don't be afraid, amma will not let anything happen to you, this dark tunnel is only for a moment, there will be light at the end of it."
Vellachi bravely nodded and gripped my hand more firmly. This is the moment, once I get on that horse and set off to Dindigul, I will be a queen in name only, but my authority will be the same as any other woman.
"May Lord Muruga watch over you and the young princess, your highness."
"Likewise Vikram, tell the men to not resist, I don't want any more death in our city."
"I will inform the few men we have here to not aggravate the British, your subjects dwelling in the city have not resisted the British and likewise we will do the same."
"We will await your glorious return to this palace, your majesty."
With our conversation coming to an end Vellacci and I entered the tunnel as the door shut behind us. The torch had illumiated most of the area and the path was clear to follow. I held onto Vellacci tightly as we walked quickly through the tunnel. It didn't take very long to reach the end as I saw day light at a distance. Sure enough just as Vikram said there was a horse with a royal guard standing next to it.
"My Queen, I am elated that you and princess Vellachi are safe, here is the horse I was guarding for your travel."
" I am grateful for your service, we will take our leave now." I said as I got on the horse. The guard picked up Vellacci and I took her and placed her in front of me."
"Your highness, where will you go?"
"I will seek aid from Hyder Ali and others, Hyder and my husband always respected each other."
"May your journey be safe your majesty, may Lord Vigneshwara (Ganesh) remove any obstacles in your path."
I smiled at the guard and set off north-west to Dindigul to make my plea to Gopal first, hopefully I can also find someone under Hyder's administration there.

A Powerful Ally:(1772)
I had managed to find a nobleman in Dindingul who was in contact with Hyder's court. He relayed the message to Hyder about my situation and Hyder has been kind enough to give me an audience in Mysore. He sent a well armed convoy of 50 horsemen and 100 foot soldiers to escort me to Mysore. The travel to Mysore was long but Vellacci and I were able to manage. As we went through the city, I couldn't help but notice how much larger it was than my own. Hyder's aid will make it possible to reclaim my kingdom, I was sure of it, he has the wealth, the weaponry and a good number of soldiers.
We finally reached the palace and Vellacci couldn't help but comment on how beautiful the palace was compared to the one in Sivaganga. Yes it was remarkable, I'm sure when I recapture Sivaganga the palace will one day match the glory of this one. We were now in the entrance of the royal court room, I was nervous to say the least, all my life I was the one being bowed to and treated with the utmost respect. Now I have to humble myself and bow before Hyder, a small price to pay to avenge my husband. The doors opened and I could see court room, the men of the court all rose from their seats as we walked in.
The soldiers escorting us kneeled in front of the Sultan, I likewise did the same. However Vellacci stood up instead of bowing. I sternly looked at her and motioned my hand for her to bow but before she could, Hyder spoke.
"The child does not need to bow before me."
This was the first time, I had seen his face and it was just like the descriptions. He was not native to this area, either he is from the West in Arabia or from the northern area of Bharat. What a fortune, I'm fleeing from one foreigner to seek aid from another.
"Take the child to the garden and entertain her." He said to the maid servants.
The maid servants came to take Vellacci, but she refused to go with them, saying that she wants to stay with me.
"Amma, I don't know these people, please let me stay with you."
"Vellaci, go with them, nothing will happen to you, I have to discuss some important matters with the Raja of Mysore."
She hugged me and I kissed her head, this must be all new to her. No longer did she have a position of privilege. Vellacci did as I told and the maid servants escorted her to the Palace's garden.
I turned my attention toward Hyder still kneeling, he had a solemn look on his face, there was no compassion or sympathy in his eyes. Would he refuse my request?
"Arise." He instructed.
I got up and the guards went to the entrance to the gate.
"My lord if I may speak."
"State what it is what you want from me."
"In honor of your friendship with my late husband I...."
" I am sorry for your loss Rani Velu but I want to make it clear, your late husband I were never friends."
I was at a loss for words. Was all my efforts coming here futile?
"Muthu and I respected each other but that was the limit of our relationship."
"What king could ever call another king his friend, or in my case a sultan?"
"My lord I am humbly requesting if you can aid me in recapturing my late husband's kingdom from the hands of the Britishers."
"Why would I want to give free aid to a woman who is an idol worshipper? Are you my family? Are you a close ally that I am obligated to assist you freely?
I decided to speak in Urdu, maybe speaking in this language may gain his favor.
"Please my lord, I am none of those things, but if you are asking for something in return."
"Once my Kingdom has been regained, I will fulfill anything except two desires."
Hyder pondered for a few moments before staring intensely at me.
"Yes there is one thing you can give me if you are successful in you attempt."
I was nervously waiting for what he would say."
"Don't worry Rani Velu, I will not add you to my collection, your late husband's honor clothes your dignity."
"I will also not annex your kingdom once it is in your hands, in respect of Muthu."
I was relieved, anything else I could give but those two to him.
"What is it that you want from me my lord, once I capture my kingdom back?"
"You see, you're not the only one with a vendetta against the British. Those white dogs have very good weaponry, and soon it will not be long before they are at my door as well."
"I am telling you from experience, I am sure they have stored a good portion of weapons and ammunition in your Kingdom."
"As compensation for my aid, if you win your kingdom back you shall allot me the lion's share of weapons and ammunition."
" A small matter that I will gladly fulfill my lord."
Who does this fool think he is, I will certainly keep a good amount of the weapons and offer him the Jackal's portion.
"How many men are you willing to send in aid my lord?"
" I can give you 5000 foot soldiers for your army that you're building, I assume Gopal has agreed to aid you as well?"
"Yes, my lord, he has been generous in his word."
"Then let me not be outdone, you can have 5000 horsemen in addition to the foot soldiers."
"You are most gracious my lord, I assure you that I will be victorious!"
"When do you plan on marching toward Sivaganga?"
" I do not have a date my lord, but I will fortify my forces well before launching an assault, I assure you it will take less than a decade before I sit on the throne."
"I will send my troops to you on the eve of battle, until then go and strengthen your forces."
"My lord if you ever wish to contact me I will be in Virupatchi preparing before the eve of battle."
"Is there anything else you want to ask of me Rani Velu?"
"No that is all my lord, can my daughter and I take our leave?"
He nodded in approval and had my daughter brought forth. Vellacci ran to me and I picked her up and placed her on my right hip. Today was a good day, a powerful ally has been secured. The goal of taking back Sivaganga has gotten much closer in a short amount of time. I walked out of the palace with my head held high, the day of vengeance would come, I was sure of it.

Eve of Battle(1780):
*Clang, Clang, Clang*
I matched swords with Kuyili who was the commander of the women's regiment of my army. She was an excellent warrior of the highest caliber despite coming from a low caste. No one but I could match her in combat, not even the Marudhu Pandiyars, who were the two best men in my ranks. The brothers had escaped the battle that my husband lost his life in and they had witnessed a British brute that struck him down after the enemy's canon had killed my husband's steed and crippled him. This monster was none other than the officer who was sitting on my husband's throne and tormenting my people. On the day of battle, I will personally make sure his end comes at my hands only.
Kuyili rebuffed the advances of men in her life and solely dedicated herself to serving me in these crucial times. She has been of great help these past 8 years, intercepting spies, to dispatching both British and nawab assassins after my life. Poor girl, I was just two years younger than her when I was first lied down with my late husband. She is going to go into battle without ever having experienced the touch of a man.
I held my sword down and looked at her, one day my daughter will be her equal in martial prowess.
"I think that is enough for training today Kuyili, I am well prepared for the battle tomorrow."
"As you wish my queen, may I take my leave?"
"Yes you may, I will be in the forest near the Korravai shrine, meditating and singing for the glory of the Goddess with my daughter."
"I will tell the others not to disturb you, your majesty."
I smiled and nodded, she was always considerate with me more so than any of my followers. She had been instrumental in gaining the alliance of all the tribal chieftains we could muster. Her reputation as a warrior preceded her and all chieftains respected her word. Without her help I don't think I could have mustered nearly half the amount of troops.
I left the fort and went into the nearby village to pick up my daughter, in these past 8 years she had been taught history, politics, and mathematics by me, and Kuyili trained her in various weaponry for the past two years. In the unlikely event if I were to fail, she would take up my mantle and complete my objective. I told her the truth about that dark day and she understands the predicament we are in. She is still too young to join me in battle and the village elders have assured me they will take care and guard her while I retake my kingdom.
"Amma are you done training with Kuyili?"
"Yes, Vellacci, come now, let us seek the blessings of Goddess Korravai for my battle tomorrow."
We were guided by the villagers as we trekked through the forest to reach the shrine. All of them adored Vellacci, I knew if something were to happen to me my daughter's life will be secured by these kind villagers. We reached the shrine and found it to be simple yet magnificent. The idol was carved out of stone showing all the features of the Goddess. Vellaci and I sat down near the idol and began reciting the Mahishasura Mardini Stotra.
