She inhaled, shaken. "Which of these commands you?"
Mr Brand eyed her lazily. "Which would you rather command me?"
Madelyn stared.
Amused, his mouth curved. "Pray, I take a wild guess."
He was daring her? She grew impossibly tense. His tone was calm—but also dangerous. He was like a lion inviting its prey with sweet words only to make it a quick meal. She knew of the little she had assessed him. He was not accustomed to being disobeyed.
'Seek a man's glory in his words.'
"Very well. I shall." She dared. He allowed with a nod. "Love?" She ventured, even though she knew he did not care for it.
His right eye blinked. Both blinked seconds later. "An off guess." he coughed lightly. "Love does not command me. It is the fartherest."
"Fame, then?"
He lived by the sea, visiting many countries and glorying in his exploits. Surely, fame mattered to him.
"How wrong you have returned from your search, straying farther even."
