The close-range shooting brought out the cannon's extreme accuracy, with the first shell hitting a gun position on the inner wall of the fortress. A large chunk of the stone wall in front of the cannon was instantly missing, and over ten Austrians nearby were hit by flying debris, their bodies covered in blood as they screamed and rolled on the ground.
The Polish soldiers right below the fortress let out a cheer, then quickly moved to a better angle and fired a volley overhead, while more than ten others lit grenades and threw them in.
Once the enemy's firepower had been somewhat suppressed, the sappers quickly moved forward and started building a climbing slope using wooden frames they had brought, based on the mounds piled up by the infantry earlier.
On the other side, Warrenov and others started piling up semi-circular dirt walls in front of the precious twelve-pounder cannon, turning it into a semi-permanent strongpoint.
