We parted ways around ten, Vivienne kissing me at the door with a promise to text soon. The evening had been uncomplicated, refreshing even – a brief respite from the chaos of everything else.
I went back to the safehouse, my mind already shifting to tomorrow's concerns. The Covenant meeting was two days away. I still needed to prepare, to practice masking my power signature, to rehearse what I'd say to Catherine Morse.
The safehouse was quiet when I arrived. Most of the team was either out or already in their rooms. I headed upstairs, intending to review Marcus's intel one more time before bed.
But as I passed Sarah's room, I paused.
Her door was slightly ajar, light spilling into the hallway.
I should have kept walking.
Instead, I knocked softly.
"Come in," her voice called.
I pushed the door open and immediately understood why she'd left it ajar.
Sarah stood near her bed, and the sight of her made my breath catch.
