Chapter 20 - Fist Authority

The first light of dawn painted the sky in shades of pink and gold as Nozue and I woke up in our cozy room at the orphanage. The gentle hum of the morning was accompanied by the soft chirping of birds outside our window, creating a perfectly serene atmosphere.

I stretched and yawned as I rose from my bed. The warmth of the blankets was a comforting end to our daily routine of hard work and adventure. I glanced across the room at Nozue, who was already up and tying his boots.

"Morning, Nozue," I said with a smile, my eyes still half-closed.

"Morning, Kazu," Nozue replied, fully dressed in his exercise gear. "Ready for our run?"

I nodded, slipping into my own workout clothes. "Absolutely. Let's get started."

We headed out into the cool morning air, our breaths forming small, white clouds as we jogged through the quiet streets of Druzka. The rhythmic pounding of our feet on the cobblestone paths was a familiar and comforting sound. As we jogged, the city slowly woke up around us. Shopkeepers began opening their wooden stalls, and the first rays of sunlight illuminated the charming, colorful homes of the capital.

After our perimeter run, Nozue and I returned to the orphanage for our strength training. We moved to the small, well-used exercise area in the backyard, where an old wooden pull-up bar and some heavy stone weights were set up.

"Push-ups first," Nozue said, dropping down onto the dewy grass.

I followed suit, the familiar, deep burn in my muscles reassuring me of my effort. We counted out our sets in unison, pushing ourselves to our absolute limits to maintain perfect form and stamina.

"Feeling good?" Nozue asked, panting heavily as we finally finished our sets.

"Definitely," I replied, wiping sweat from my brow with my shirt. "Ready for today's quest?"

"Absolutely. Let's make it count."

After our workout, we quickly washed up and headed to the dining room for a hearty breakfast. The orphanage's kitchen was filled with the mouth-watering smells of freshly baked bread and sizzling eggs. Rosalia, our non-biological mother and caretaker, watched over us with a warm smile.

"Good work this morning, boys," Rosalia said as she served us massive plates of food. "You two are getting visibly stronger every single day."

"Thanks, Nanay Rosalia," I said, taking a seat at the table. "We're heading out for another construction quest right after breakfast."

"I'm sure you'll do great," Rosalia encouraged, patting my shoulder. "Just remember to stay safe and take care of each other out there."

With breakfast finished, Nozue and I set off for the Guild. The heavy construction quests were a significant part of our new routine; we took on new manual labor projects every two days. Each quest required different grueling tasks: from hauling massive logs to clearing heavy stone debris. Our work actively contributed to the development and maintenance of various building sites around Druzka, and more importantly, it was steadily grinding my physical Strength stat.

We arrived at the Guild and picked up our assignment for the day. The foreman handed us a set of instructions and a list of tasks.

"Today's project is rebuilding a collapsed section of the eastern town wall," the foreman explained. "You'll be working with a team of adult laborers. Just follow the instructions, and you'll do fine."

Nozue and I nodded, taking the parchment and heading straight to the construction site. We worked diligently alongside the burly laborers, using our unique skills to efficiently complete the tasks. My Exploration agility and Nozue's Water and Light magical abilities made us incredibly valuable assets to the team.

As the sun began to set, we finally finished our tasks and returned to the orphanage, completely exhausted but deeply satisfied with an honest day's work.

Dinner was always a lively affair at the orphanage, with Rosalia and the younger children eagerly waiting for us to return. The dining room was filled with joyous laughter and chatter as we recounted our day's adventures and the progress of the wall construction.

Rosalia served the evening meal with a warm smile, her eyes twinkling with pride. "You two have done an excellent job today. It's truly inspiring to see your dedication to the city."

"Thanks, Rosalia," I said, enjoying the comforting, hot food. "We're making good progress, and it feels good to actively contribute."

As the evening wound down, the younger children gathered around Nozue and me, eager to hear more stories about our day. Even mundane tales of hauling giant stones were met with wide-eyed wonder by the kids.

After the children were finally tucked into bed, Nozue and I retired to our shared room. The days blurred together in a comforting rhythm of exercise, hard work, and family life. Each one was a small, vital step in our journey.

For two entire months, this routine was our life. Each day brought new physical challenges and accomplishments, and the comfort of our home and the unwavering support of our new family made the grueling hard work entirely worthwhile.

Two Months Later

The morning sun cast a warm, golden hue across the orphanage as Nozue and I finished our usual jog and headed back for breakfast. The rich aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon greeted us as we entered the cozy kitchen.

Rosalia was already busy preparing our meal. She smiled warmly at us. "Good morning, you two! You're just in time for breakfast."

"Morning, Rosalia!" I said, my voice bubbling with cheerfulness. "The jog was fantastic today. I feel ready for anything."

As I took my seat at the long wooden table, I felt a sudden burst of curiosity. We had been grinding for sixty days straight, but I hadn't actually checked my system menus in weeks. After finishing my bacon, I quickly excused myself.

In a quiet corner of the orphanage hallway, my face lit up as I mentally accessed my skill window. The holographic interface was familiar, but the numbers had changed drastically. I scanned through my status, my eyes widening with every new detail.

My eyes sparkled with sheer excitement as I took in the impressive updates. My Exploration and Assassin skills had made significant strides, and even my Mining and Smithing skills had seen notable improvements just from handling raw materials on the job sites!

"This is amazing!" I whispered, my cheerfulness impossible to contain. "Look at how much I've improved! I had no idea I was making such massive progress."

Just then, Nozue strolled by, noticing my jubilant demeanor. "Hey, Kazu, what's got you so pumped up?"

I looked up, my face beaming with joy. "I just checked my skills update, and the progress is incredible! My exploration and assassin skills are almost at their absolute peak, and my Strength stat is now at Level 48! It's so exciting to see how far we've come!"

Nozue smiled broadly, clearly pleased for me. "That's fantastic! It sounds like all our hard work is really paying off. I'm so happy for you!"

I nodded enthusiastically. "Thanks, Nozue! It's really motivating to see these actual results. I can't wait to use these new skills in a real dungeon!" I paused, tapping my chin. "You know, Nozue... I'm really curious about what kind of skill I'll get once my Strength hits Level 50. I always get something incredible when my unique skills reach that specific milestone."

Nozue looked intrigued. "What are you hoping for?"

My eyes lit up. "I don't know yet, but I'm excited to find out! Every new skill has been amazing so far. I'm just two levels away!"

"I'm sure it will be something great. Your skills are always impressive," Nozue said calmly.

"Let's go to the Guild and take another heavy quest today!" I said with absolute confidence.

"Alright. Kazu, can you store our water and lunch in your Item Space before we go?" Nozue asked, holding out his pack.

"Sure thing," I replied, opening the void and dropping the supplies inside.

We set off toward the Guild to pick up our next construction quest. The city of Druzka was already stirring with loud activity, the streets bustling with merchants setting up their colorful stalls and armored adventurers going about their business.

As we approached the Guild, my excitement was palpable. I was eager to start our new quest and finally hit that Level 50 milestone.

Inside the Guild, the familiar warmth and hustle greeted us. Missy was at the reception desk, busy sorting through a towering pile of paperwork. Her long ears twitched, and her eyes instantly lit up when she saw us approach.

"Good morning, Kazu, Nozue!" she said cheerfully. "Here for a new quest?"

I nodded, leaning against the counter. "Yes, we're here for our next construction quest. We finished the wall repairs yesterday and we're ready to take on another heavy one."

Missy smiled as she reached under the desk for the quest board ledger. "Let me just get that for you."

As Missy handed us the new quest details, her eyes couldn't help but linger on me. She noticed how my physique had subtly, but undeniably, changed over the past two months. My shoulders were broader, my muscles were far more defined, and I carried myself with a much more grounded, confident stance. It was incredibly evident that my rigorous physical training was starting to show real results.

"You're looking quite fit, Kazu," Missy remarked, her voice betraying a hint of genuine surprise. "I can actually see all the hard work you've been putting in."

I chuckled, rubbing the back of my neck. "Thanks, Missy. I've been working really hard with Nozue. It's part of our daily routine now."

Missy's gaze softened, a complex mix of deep admiration and something far more personal shining in her eyes. "It really shows. Keep up the good work. I'm sure today's quest will go smoothly for you."

Nozue, catching the tail end of the exchange, glanced at me and then back at Missy with a highly knowing smirk. "Oh, we'll make sure to give it our absolute best, Missy."

As we collected the new quest details and left the Guild, we headed straight to the new construction site. We spent the entire day working diligently, our movements smooth and perfectly practiced from our rigorous two-month routine.

I felt a profound new sense of raw strength and agility, my body adjusting to the brutal physical demands with increasing ease. I was more determined than ever to reach my next milestone.

As evening approached, the day remained sunny and warm. Nozue and I finally took a break after lifting dozens of heavy wooden beams and carrying raw stone materials across the site.

I leaned back against a wooden pillar, wiping sweat from my face. Suddenly, I felt a highly familiar, electric sensation buzzing in the back of my mind, indicating a major skill update.

I mentally pulled up my system screens to check the new notifications:

[Notification: Mining Skill reached Level 11] [Congratulations! Your Strength stat has reached Level 50.] [New Active Skill Unlocked: Fist Authority]

(Fist Authority: A devastatingly powerful physical punch that can completely shatter even the toughest obstacles and armors. Damage scales with the Strength stat.)

My face lit up with absolute, pure excitement. "Nozue! Guess what?! I just unlocked a new skill called Fist Authority! It's a super powerful punch!"

Nozue wiped his dusty hands on his pants and looked at me with deep interest. "That sounds amazing! Have you tried it yet?"

I shook my head eagerly, looking down at my knuckles. "Not yet, but I can't wait to test it out on a monster! It should be really cool!"

With renewed, boundless energy, I continued working through the evening, my mind happily buzzing with the endless, destructive possibilities of my new skill.
