Ash watched as the spherical objects fell from the aircraft one by one. Recognition dawned on him—they weren't ordinary spheres but Electrode Pokémon. As they descended toward Moltres, each Electrode began to glow ominously.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
A series of deafening explosions ripped through the air as all the Electrode simultaneously used their Explosion attack. Their combined power created a devastating blast wave. Surrounding trees were violently uprooted, and Ash and his Pokémon braced themselves against the tremendous force of the shock wave.
The clearing instantly filled with smoke and flames. A dozen Electrode detonating at once created one of the most powerful Normal-type attacks possible. The spectacle was both terrifying and awe-inspiring, with destructive power that defied belief.
Despite being a considerable distance away, Ash and his Pokémon were still knocked backward by the explosive force. Trees around them were torn from the ground, and the nearby river's surface churned violently from the disturbance.
Moltres was engulfed directly by the explosions. Even for a Legendary Pokémon, such a concentrated attack would be difficult to withstand.
"MOOOOLTRES!"
From within the smoke cloud came a defiant screech. Suddenly, flaming wings parted the smoke as Moltres emerged. Its body bore visible wounds from the blasts, but its eyes burned with undiluted rage.
With a powerful cry, it opened its beak and unleashed a stream of orange-red flames. Despite its injuries, the Fire-type attack possessed incredible potency—far beyond what ordinary Fire Pokémon could generate. The intense heat could easily melt metal on contact.
At that moment, a hatch opened on top of the aircraft. A platform rose from below, carrying a figure to the vessel's exterior. The individual immediately threw a Poké Ball into the air.
"Houndoom, use Counter!"
The Poké Ball burst open in a flash of light, releasing a Houndoom. The Dark/Fire-type Pokémon descended through the air, positioning itself directly in the path of Moltres's Flamethrower. Houndoom's body began to glow with a distinctive red aura.
When Moltres's flames struck, they collided with Houndoom's Counter. The attack seemed to meet an invisible barrier before being redirected back toward its source with even greater intensity. Moltres's eyes widened in surprise, but it had no time to evade. The redirected flames engulfed the Legendary Bird.
"SCREEECH!"
Embers exploded into the air as Moltres plummeted from the sky. As the smoke from the earlier explosions began to dissipate, the Legendary Pokémon crashed into the ground, raising another cloud of dust.
The battlefield was now littered with unconscious Electrode, their bodies scattered across the cratered terrain. Having used Explosion, they had all fainted from the exertion. However, the figure aboard the aircraft paid them no attention, focusing entirely on the fallen Legendary Bird.
Houndoom landed gracefully on the ground, facing toward the settling dust cloud. As the air currents from the hovering aircraft blew away the remaining smoke, Moltres became visible once more, lying in a crater with a pained expression.
"Hmph! You won't escape this time," the figure on the aircraft sneered. Despite Moltres appearing incapable of resistance, he called out another attack without mercy. "Houndoom, Dark Pulse!"
Obeying instantly, Houndoom opened its mouth as dark purple energy coalesced between its jaws. It released the energy as a series of pulsating rings that shot directly toward the vulnerable Moltres.
"CHAR!"
Suddenly, a powerful stream of flames intercepted the attack from the side. When Houndoom's Dark Pulse was moments away from striking Moltres, the two energy attacks collided in mid-air, creating a tremendous explosion.
BOOM!
The collision of energies created a powerful shock wave. Being closer to the blast, Houndoom was thrown backward, sliding across the ground as it struggled to maintain its footing. Seeing this unexpected interference, the figure aboard the aircraft frowned in annoyance.
He turned toward the source of the flames. From the edge of the forest, now devastated by the earlier explosions, a trainer emerged with his Pokémon. The newcomer looked up defiantly at the aircraft.
The figure aboard the vessel appeared momentarily surprised before a smile spread across his face.
In the impact crater below, Moltres slowly opened its eyes, focusing on the figure who had just arrived.
The newcomer was none other than Ash. The man on the aircraft recognized him immediately—this wasn't their first encounter. Likewise, Ash instantly identified the Team Rocket Executive as Archer.
Archer continued smiling as he retrieved another Poké Ball and released its contents.
A Golbat materialized, beating its wings steadily in the air. Following Archer's signal, it flew above him, grasped his shoulders with its feet, and carried him off the platform. The Poison/Flying-type Pokémon carefully descended, bringing Archer to the ground beside Houndoom before releasing him and hovering protectively behind its trainer.
"I didn't expect we'd meet again so soon, Ash," Archer remarked, his tone eerily casual, as though they were old friends crossing paths by chance.
"You're becoming quite the nuisance, always interfering with our operations. I heard you also caused trouble for our operatives in the Safari Zone." Though Archer's face maintained a polite smile as he glanced toward the injured Moltres, a cold gleam flashed across his eyes.
"What can I say? Whenever I see Team Rocket, I can't help but get involved," Ash replied coolly.
During their last confrontation, Ash had managed to defeat Archer by utilizing the bond phenomenon with Greninja. He could tell that Archer had grown stronger since then, but Ash had also improved through his Gym battles and training. He wasn't intimidated.
"Do you really think you can stop us alone? Don't be naive. One person cannot change anything. Just as you couldn't save Zapdos, you won't be able to save Moltres now."
Archer's words seemed deliberately chosen to undermine Ash's confidence. Ash frowned slightly as the implications sank in.
Based on Archer's statement, Ash deduced that Zapdos, which had escaped from the Power Plant during their previous encounter, had likely been captured.
Now they were after Moltres, which suggested their target was all three Legendary Birds. With Moltres here and Zapdos potentially captured, Ash couldn't help wondering if Articuno had already fallen into Team Rocket's hands as well.
