Chapter 10 - SOMEONE DEMOTED.

"So you remember your worthless mortal life as a slave, yet the curse's origin still eludes you?"

The voice's bewilderment and anger bordered on a scream. I wished to cover my ears, if only I'd had any. Same for hands. Same for everything.

"You're not focused, are you?" The voice snapped, irritation vibrating through every syllable. "Guiding you is like stumbling through a fog-choked forest. Concentrate!" it ordered. "Your mind is blind, just like you. Figure it out quickly before the Abyss claims you irrevocably! What if I'm dragged down too due to your stupidity?"

The Abyss…

The Abyss was one-way only.

But the Darkness, this border zone where I now drifted, was different. You could linger here like a prisoner sealed in solitary confinement. Unseen. Unfindable. And no one ever could sense or find you, even with heavenly artifacts.

But there was no escape either. You just waited. Punishment or curse, your stay here had an expiration date.

The question was: how long was mine?

And if I was cursed… when had it begun?

"Well, at least you've finally started thinking in the right direction.!" The voice almost sounded pleased. Almost.

"You're thinking and that's good," it went on. "I can't interfere." Like it could cheer me up, pathetic.

"What are you?" I finally demanded. "Voice? Some Celestial Creature? Daemon? A hallucination?"

"You cling to ignorance like moss on ancient stones. Can't I be more than a creature or demon?" The voice sounded… offended.

Impatient. Sharp. Conscienceless. Irritable. Yes, demon-like. That was my only conclusion.

"What a cursed bastard here!" It hissed.

"You seem like a demon to me! I can't help it! Just endure it," I shot back, "Or explain yourself."

"Stop making me the focus of your thoughts.

Annoyance again surged from it like heat. "Concentrate and connect your consciousness."

"So you do expect some effort from me, don't you?" I pressed. "Or do you just avoid answering questions about yourself?"

"Tooting!" it barked, whatever that meant. "About me…"

But that didn't matter. Not yet. I needed answers about my situation.

"So… Who are you?"

"Just immortal," it said.

"Immortal?" I scoffed. "Like immortal-immortal? A god?"

"Not quite..."

"What's complicated about that? Or, wait, were you once a God? And now you're… what? Demoted? Knocked down to 'just immortal'? WOW! Impressive!

"That's none of your business," the voice snapped. "My patience path has already

worn to mud beneath a thousand storms! Think for yourself!"

The anger rolling off it was unmistakable. Yes. Demon-like indeed.

"Answer for the demon," it growled suddenly. "Or I will push you into the Abyss myself and tell the Master you perished."

A twist of cold realization.

So it wasn't here by choice.

It had fled here… because of the Master's order?
