Chapter 21 - Chapter 20

The Sorting Hat sat there looking like a depressed leather therapist who'd seen a thousand years of teenage drama and had OPINIONS—elaborate, musical opinions that it was about to deliver whether anyone had asked or not.

It opened its mouth-rip (seriously, who designed this thing? Someone with trauma, clearly) and began to sing with the energy of Elton John at the piano circa 1973, except the piano was a stool and Elton John was a hat having a full emotional breakdown set to music.

*"Ohhhhhhh, I've been sitting here for ages,*

*Watching students through life's stages,*

*Sorting little children into teams,*

*While they're having nervous screams!*

*Some go left and some go right,*

*Some are brave and some take flight,*

*But honestly? Between you and me?*

*Most of you need therapy!*

*GRYFFINDOR! (Gryffindor!)*

*For the brave and bold who run toward danger like it's a sport!*

*They've got courage, they've got heart,*

*Also terrible survival instincts—that's the hard part!*

*They'll fight a dragon just for fun,*

*Someone please teach these kids to RUN!*

*RAVENCLAW! (Ravenclaw!)*

*Where the nerds reside and knowledge is the law!*

*They'll read a book about reading books,*

*While judging all your aesthetic looks!*

*Brilliant minds but socially strange,*

*Their idea of fun is alphabetizing by page range!*

*HUFFLEPUFF! (Sweet Hufflepuff!)*

*Loyal to the end even when the end is rough!*

*Kindest people you'll ever meet,*

*They'll literally die for friends—someone get these kids a therapist seat!*

*Work ethic? Unmatched! Devotion? Complete!*

*Self-preservation? ...Yeah, we don't do that here, it's not neat!*

*SLYTHERIN! (Ambitious Slytherin!)*

*Where cunning lives and the morally gray convene!*

*They're not all evil—that's a stereotype!*

*But like seventy-five percent? Yeah, that feels about right!*

*Ambitious, clever, power-seeking crew,*

*Half will run the world, half will try to end it too!*

*But HERE'S the truth I've learned through TIME!*

*(And I'm running out of words that rhyme!)*

*Houses matter less than choice,*

*Less than finding your own voice!*

*You'll make mistakes and you'll grow,*

*And honestly? That's the whole show!*

*So come on up, don't be shy,*

*Let me read your mind—oh my!*

*I'll see your traumas, hopes, and dreams,*

*Then stick you with roommates for SEVEN YEARS it seems!*

*Welcome, welcome, one and all,*

*To this increasingly chaotic hall!*

*Let's get SORTING! Let's begin!*

*(Someone please get me OUT of this JOB I'm IN!)"*

The hat collapsed dramatically like it had just finished a Vegas residency and needed a stiff drink and possibly witness protection.

The Great Hall erupted in applause—partly because it was tradition, partly because that was genuinely impressive, and partly because people were terrified not to clap.

"That was..." Hermione started, eyes wide.

"AMAZING?" Ron said with genuine enthusiasm.

"Emotionally overwhelming?" Harry offered.

"Suspiciously specific about therapy?" Daphne added.

"Like if Elton John was a hat having a mental breakdown?" Tracey suggested.

"I LOVED IT!" Ron concluded.

McGonagall stood up with her mile-long scroll, looking at it with the expression of someone about to read the entire phone book.

"When I call your name," she announced with the authority of someone who'd perfected this speech through decades of repetition and possibly ritual sacrifice to the gods of patience, "you will sit on the stool. The hat will be placed on your head. It will sort you. This is not complicated. Please don't make it complicated. I'm begging you. Don't make it complicated."

"Abbott, Hannah!"

Hannah made a noise like a small animal realizing it was about to be fed to something larger.

"I can't," she whispered, legs locked. "I've forgotten how legs work. Evolution has failed me. Bipedalism was a mistake."

"Hannah," Susan said, physically pushing her forward like a shopping cart, "you literally have to do this. It's mandatory. Like death and taxes, but with magic."

"WHAT IF I FALL?"

"Then you FALL MAJESTICALLY! Own it! Make it a statement!"

"I DON'T WANT TO MAKE STATEMENTS! I WANT TO BECOME INVISIBLE!"

"Too late! You're already walking! Momentum is happening!"

Hannah somehow made it to the stool through sheer force of Susan's determination and possibly divine intervention. The hat dropped onto her head like a depressed blanket.

Fifteen seconds of silence.

"HUFFLEPUFF!" the hat belted out like the final note of a power ballad.

The Hufflepuff table erupted like someone had just announced free hugs and emotional support for life. Hannah stumbled toward them in a daze.

"Bones, Susan!"

Susan walked up with the confidence of someone who'd never experienced self-doubt and possibly never would. Hat barely touched her head.

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

She grinned, hopped off with athletic grace, and joined Hannah for what looked like a reunion scene from a movie about separated sisters.

"Boot, Terry!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

"Brocklehurst, Mandy!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

"Brown, Lavender!"

A girl with enough enthusiasm to power a small country practically bounced to the stool.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The Gryffindor table lost their collective minds. Fred and George were leading what appeared to be an improvised musical number involving:

- Standing on benches

- Coordinated arm movements

- Possibly summoning ancient spirits

- Definitely violating fire codes

"I love them already," Ron said with admiration.

"They're chaos incarnate," Hermione said with concern.

"Exactly!" Ron agreed.

"Bulstrode, Millicent!"

"SLYTHERIN!"

"Corner, Michael!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

"Crabbe, Vincent!"

One of Draco's matching bookends lumbered forward. The hat basically screamed before it even touched his head.

"SLYTHERIN!"

"Shocking," Hermione muttered.

"Revolutionary," Harry agreed.

"Truly nobody saw this coming," Tracey added.

"Davis, Tracey!"

Tracey walked up with her signature analytical expression. The hat deliberated for almost a full minute—long enough that people started making bets.

"RAVENCLAW!"

Tracey grinned, gave Harry a subtle thumbs up, and headed to her new table with obvious satisfaction.

"She's going to rule that house in three days," Harry predicted.

"Two days," Daphne corrected.

"Twenty minutes," Hermione suggested.

"Finch-Fletchley, Justin!"

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

"Finnigan, Seamus!"

Irish kid with a grin that suggested he'd definitely caused an explosion and would absolutely do it again.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

"Goyle, Gregory!"

Second bookend, identical result.

"SLYTHERIN!"

"Granger, Hermione!"

Hermione approached the stool like it was a final exam worth 80% of her grade.

The hat dropped.

And stayed.

And stayed.

Two full minutes.

"She's probably arguing with it," Ron whispered.

"About what?" Harry asked.

"Everything. Academic rigor. House placement methodology. Whether the hat's song had proper meter."

"That's... actually probably accurate," Harry admitted.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Hermione looked surprised but pleased. The Gryffindors welcomed her with cheers and probably some relief that they'd gotten the smart one.

"YES!" Ron pumped his fist. "We got Hermione!"

"You don't even really know her yet," Harry pointed out.

"Doesn't matter! She's clearly brilliant! Also she already told me off twice on the train which means she cares about my wellbeing!"

"That's not—"

"It's FRIEND BEHAVIOR, Harry!"

"Greengrass, Daphne!"

Daphne glided to the stool with aristocratic grace. The hat settled onto her perfectly arranged hair.

Ninety seconds.

"RAVENCLAW!"

Daphne's eyebrows shot up—surprise quickly replaced by satisfaction. The Slytherin table looked legitimately shocked. Several pure-blood families were probably having crisis meetings.

"Hopkins, Wayne!"

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

"Longbottom, Neville!"

Neville walked to the stool like he was walking to his own execution via public embarrassment.

The hat dropped.

Silence.

More silence.

THREE FULL MINUTES of silence.

"He's definitely arguing with it too," Ron said.

"About what? Neville's the least argumentative person ever," Harry said.

"Maybe the hat's arguing with ITSELF about Neville," Hermione suggested. "Maybe Neville's complicated."

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The announcement had weight—like the hat had really wrestled with this one and finally made a decision it believed in.

Neville looked absolutely shocked. Fred and George immediately claimed him.

"NEW FAVORITE PERSON!" Fred announced.

"We're adopting him!" George agreed.

"Do we get a say?" Neville asked weakly.

"NO!" they said together.

"Malfoy, Draco!"

Draco swaggered up like he owned the castle, the grounds, and probably several nearby counties.

Hat barely touched his hair—

"SLYTHERIN!"

He smirked with the satisfaction of someone whose entire identity had just been validated by a singing hat. Headed to Slytherin where he was welcomed like royalty.

"Nott, Theodore!"

"SLYTHERIN!"

"Parkinson, Pansy!"

Girl with a face that suggested she'd been practicing "mean" in the mirror since birth.

"SLYTHERIN!"

She immediately joined Draco's entourage.

"Patil, Padma!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

"Patil, Parvati!"

Twin sister.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The twins looked at each other across the hall with expressions that said "This is either going to be amazing or a disaster and possibly both simultaneously."

"Perks, Sally-Anne!"

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

"Potter, Harry!"

Everything stopped.

Time. Space. Several laws of physics. Someone's breathing.

Every head turned with synchronized precision.

Whispers exploded:

"POTTER?"

"THE Potter?"

"Boy-Who-Lived Potter?"

"Caught-a-Death-Eater Potter?"

"I heard he's already an Auror!"

"I heard he can speak to animals!"

"I heard he's secretly twins!"

"I heard he's actually a dragon in disguise!"

"That's RIDICULOUS!"

"WE'RE AT MAGIC SCHOOL! ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE!"

"Fair point!"

Harry walked toward the stool with outward calm (thank you, Gamer's Mind) while internally screaming (thank you, being a normal human).

He sat.

Hat dropped.

Vision blocked.

And then a voice in his head with the energy of Elton John three drinks into a party:

*"WELL HELLO THERE, HARRY POTTER! The Boy Who Lived! The Chosen One! The kid with TWO sets of memories, a VIDEO GAME SYSTEM in his brain, and a SOUL FRAGMENT TIMESHARE in his forehead! You're like a magical MATRYOSHKA DOLL of complications!"*

*Oh good,* Harry thought. *The hat's Elton John and also possibly drunk.*

*"I am NEITHER drunk NOR Elton John, though I appreciate the comparison! I've been doing this for A THOUSAND YEARS! I've seen EVERYTHING! Future heroes! Future villains! Future Ministers! That one kid who became a professional Gobstones player—genuinely the most boring timeline! But YOU? You're SPECIAL-special! COMPLICATED-special! MULTIPLE-CHOICE-special!"*

*Can you see everything in my head?*

*"EVERYTHING! Your memories! Your system! Your plans! Your fears! Your hopes! Your deep anxiety about whether people actually like you or just think you're famous! Your concern about whether your socks match! Harry, NOBODY cares about socks! You're ELEVEN! Fashion is IRRELEVANT at eleven!"*

*Are you going to tell anyone?*

*"Absolutely NOT! I'm like a THERAPIST but a HAT! Confidentiality is SACRED! Also I literally CAN'T tell anyone because I'M A HAT! No hands! Can't write! Can't send owls! Can't use a telephone! Hat life is LIMITING but SECURE!"*

*What about the Horcrux?*

*"OH! The HORCRUX! Yes! Soul fragment! Very cozy in your scar! Probably has a LEASE AGREEMENT! But your Gamer's Body is keeping it contained like magical TUPPERWARE! Very clever! Someone designed your system WELL! They knew what they were DOING!"*

*Can you remove it?*

*"Harry. HARRY. I'm a HAT. A HAT! I sort students into HOUSES! Soul surgery is WILDLY outside my job description! I don't have a medical license! I don't have HANDS! I can't perform surgery! The insurance liability alone!"*

*So you know about it but can't help.*

*"Correct! I'm emotionally supportive but practically useless! Like a therapist! ...Wait, that came out wrong."*

*"NOW!"* the hat continued, switching gears with the energy of someone changing piano keys mid-song. *"Let's talk SORTING! You're FASCINATING! You could go ANYWHERE!"*

*"Gryffindor? You walked right up to a DEATH EATER! Bravery! Courage! Possibly undiagnosed recklessness but we're calling it COURAGE!"*

*"Ravenclaw? Your BRAIN! Operating at levels that would make ADULTS WEEP! You're planning SEVEN YEARS ahead! You've got STRATEGIES! CONTINGENCIES! BACKUP PLANS! You're like a CHESS MASTER but with HIGHER STAKES!"*

*"Hufflepuff? Look at you making FRIENDS! BONDING! Being LOYAL! You'd DIE for these people and you've known them for SIX HOURS! That's HUFFLEPUFF ENERGY! Pure DEVOTION!"*

*"Slytherin? The AMBITION! The CUNNING! You're planning to ALTER MAGICAL HISTORY! You're going to SAVE EVERYONE through CAREFUL MANIPULATION of EVENTS! Salazar would write you LOVE LETTERS!"*

*So where do I belong?*

*"Where do YOU want to go? This is YOUR choice!"*

*Gryffindor. With Ron and Hermione and Neville. That's where I belong.*

*"WHY Gryffindor SPECIFICALLY? Give me the REAL REASON!"*

*Because those are my people. Because friendship is going to be my foundation. Because courage matters and I'm going to need all of it. Because I choose Gryffindor.*

The hat went silent for a moment. Then, softer, more gentle:

*"You know what, Harry? In a thousand years, I've sorted exactly THREE students who qualified for ALL FOUR houses. Dumbledore was one. You're number two. Number three involves a TIME TRAVELER, a PROPHECY, and a VERY CONFUSED UNICORN. LONG STORY. Involves PAPERWORK."*

*"But here's what I've learned: You're RIGHT. Your friends are in Gryffindor. Your HEART is in Gryffindor. And you've got the ONE THING that defines a TRUE Gryffindor—you choose COURAGE even when you're TERRIFIED. You do what's RIGHT even when it's HARD. You PROTECT PEOPLE even when it puts you in DANGER."*

*"Also, between you and me? You're gonna NEED that courage. What's coming isn't going to be solved with JUST intelligence or ambition or loyalty. It's going to require GENUINE BRAVERY. The kind that makes you STAND UP even when you're SHAKING. You've got that, kid. More than ANY student I've sorted in DECADES."*

*Thank you.*

*"Don't thank me YET! You're about to have SEVEN YEARS of ABSOLUTE CHAOS! Musical CHAOS! Like my SONG but LONGER and with MORE EXPLOSIONS! Also—HEADS UP—your system is about to give you a REWARD! I can see it LOADING! Like a PROGRESS BAR but MAGICAL! You're about to get EXCITED! Try not to make a WEIRD FACE!"*

*How do you even—*

*"I'M A THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD SENTIENT HAT THAT READS MINDS AND SINGS LIKE ELTON JOHN, HARRY! I KNOW ABOUT EVERYTHING! IT'S MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE! Now GO! BE BRAVE! BE BRILLIANT! BE YOU! And for the love of MAGIC, Harry—HAVE FUN! You're ELEVEN! This should be FUN!"*

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The Gryffindor table absolutely LOST THEIR MINDS.

Fred and George led what could only be described as a full musical production involving:

- Standing on benches

- Choreographed movements

- Possibly actual magic

- Definitely fire code violations

- A chant: "POTTER! POTTER! WE'VE GOT HARRY POTTER!"

- Several people crying (emotion, not sadness)

- One person playing an invisible trumpet

Harry stood, removed the hat (which gave him a mental wink and what felt like a psychic high-five), and started walking.

And then—

[LOCATION-BASED EVENT DETECTED]

[Sorted into Gryffindor House - Significant Milestone]

[Special Check-in Opportunity Available]

[Reward: House-Specific Enhancement]

*The hat called it. That's genuinely impressive.*

"Claim," Harry thought.

[LOCATION-BASED CHECK-IN COMPLETE]

[Gryffindor House Sorting - Acknowledged]

[Reward: Lion's Heart (Legendary House Enhancement)]

[Lion's Heart - Gryffindor-Specific Legendary Enhancement]

[Congratulations! You've been sorted into Gryffindor, house of the brave, home of the lion, land of the people who see danger and go "Yeah, I should definitely poke that."]

[Effect 1: Courage Amplification]

[All acts of genuine bravery receive +25% effectiveness. When you choose courage, your magic responds. Spells defending others hit harder. Shields protecting friends hold stronger. Courage becomes literal power.]

[Effect 2: Unbreakable Will]

[Mental fortitude significantly enhanced. Resistance to fear effects, Imperius attempts, psychological attacks substantially improved. You can still feel fear—courage isn't fearlessness—but fear can't control you.]

[Effect 3: Inspire Courage]

[Your presence strengthens nearby allies' courage. Friends fighting alongside you find their own bravery enhanced. You become a beacon others can rally around.]

[Effect 4: Recovery in Adversity]

[When injured protecting others or fighting for beliefs, recovery rate increases dramatically. Gryffindor courage makes you tougher, harder to keep down, more resilient.]

[Note: Synergizes with Gamer's Body, Castle Resonance, all courage-based effects. You're building toward actual heroism instead of just fame. We're proud. The house is proud. The castle is proud. The hat is proud and also singing about it internally. Group feelings. Moving on.]

Warmth flooded Harry's chest—deep, fundamental warmth. The house saying "You're ours. We've got you. Welcome home, lion cub."

He reached the table. Ron, Hermione, Neville made space. Fred and George materialized like ginger guardian angels.

"HARRY POTTER!" Fred announced.

"IN! OUR! HOUSE!" George emphasized each word.

"THIS IS THE BEST THING!"

"WE'VE GOT HARRY POTTER!"

"GRYFFINDOR'S WINNING EVERYTHING!"

"THE HOUSE CUP!"

"QUIDDITCH!"

"ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YET!"

"POSSIBLY SOME STUFF THAT HASN'T BEEN INVENTED!"

"WE'RE UNSTOPPABLE!"

"WE'RE LEGENDARY!"

"WE'RE GOING TO BE INSUFFERABLE!" they concluded with matching grins.

"Please don't be insufferable on my behalf," Harry said. "Low profile. Remember? Low profile."

Both twins stared at him.

"Mate," Fred said.

"You caught a Death Eater," George continued.

"On the TRAIN," Fred added.

"BEFORE SCHOOL," George emphasized.

"Your 'low profile' LEFT THE SOLAR SYSTEM!" they said together.

"It's currently colonizing ALPHA CENTAURI!" Fred added.

"It's sending POSTCARDS!" George agreed.

"...Okay, fair," Harry conceded.

Sorting continued:

"Thomas, Dean!"

"GRYFFINDOR!"

"Turpin, Lisa!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

"Weasley, Ronald!"

Ron walked up. Hat barely touched—

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Ron's grin could've lit the castle. He RAN to the table where he was welcomed by:

- His brothers (all of them)

- Harry

- Hermione

- Neville

- Half the house

- Several people just excited by enthusiasm

"WE'RE ALL TOGETHER!" Ron announced. "THIS IS PERFECT!"

"It really is," Hermione agreed, smiling.

"Best day ever," Neville added quietly.

"Zabini, Blaise!"

"SLYTHERIN!"

Done.

Dumbledore stood, eyes twinkling.

"Welcome!" he announced. "Welcome to another year at Hogwarts! Before we feast, I'd like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"

He sat down.

Applause despite complete lack of sense.

"Is he having a stroke?" Harry whispered.

"He's always like that," Ron whispered back. "Brilliant but mental. Most powerful wizard alive but also possibly not okay. It's a thing."

"Should someone check on him?"

"Probably! But nobody will!"

"That seems irresponsible!"

"WELCOME TO HOGWARTS!"

Food appeared.

APPEARED. Fully cooked. Steaming. Delicious.

"BLOODY HELL!" Ron breathed.

"Language," Hermione said, but weakly, because she was also staring.

"Hermione, there's a CHICKEN that MATERIALIZED FROM NOWHERE! It was somewhere else—possibly ALIVE—and now it's HERE! COOKED! WITH SEASONING! Language is MANDATORY!"

"...You make an excellent point!" Hermione agreed.

The feast was spectacular:

- Every meat imaginable

- Every potato preparation known to humanity

- Vegetables

- Breads

- Desserts already visible

- Probably some foods that hadn't been invented yet

"This is the best thing ever," Neville said, loading his plate.

"This is MAGIC," Dean Thomas breathed.

"This is DINNER," Ron corrected. "MAGICAL DINNER. DINNER OF LEGENDS. IF MERLIN HAD DINNER IT WOULD BE THIS!"

"You're mixing historical references!" Hermione protested.

"I'M MIXING FOOD! PRIORITIES, HERMIONE!"

Harry ate and took stock:

- Sorted with friends: ✓

- Castle adopted him: ✓

- House adopted him: ✓

- Three enhancements: ✓

- Made Malfoy enemies: ✓

- Exposed Death Eater: ✓

- Reputation: Complicated ✓

*Day 31. 334 days until safe Horcrux removal.*

*Let's do this.*

The adventure had begun.

—

The feast was in full swing, which meant Ron was achieving what could only be described as "performance art eating"—his plate was a constantly rotating display of every food group known to wizardkind, and possibly some that had been classified as "questionable" by the Ministry.

"Ron," Hermione said, watching with a mixture of horror and fascination, "are you even tasting any of that?"

"Tashting ish for amachurs," Ron said through a mouthful of chicken, potatoes, and what might have been Yorkshire pudding. "Thish ish abouth volumsh."

"That's disgusting," Hermione said.

"That's EFFICIENT!" Ron corrected after swallowing. "There's like forty dishes here! I can't try them all if I'm being SLOW about it!"

"You're going to make yourself sick," Neville predicted.

"Worth it!" Ron declared, reaching for what appeared to be shepherd's pie.

Harry was eating at a more reasonable pace—mostly because Gamer's Body meant he actually understood what "reasonable nutrition" looked like, and also because he was busy observing everything.

The Great Hall was magnificent. Thousands of candles floating in midair (fire code violations for DAYS). The enchanted ceiling showing the night sky with actual stars (how did that even WORK?). Four long house tables packed with students of all ages, all eating, talking, laughing.

And then there were the ghosts.

"Uh," Harry said, watching a translucent figure drift through the Gryffindor table. "Is that—"

"A ghost? Yeah!" Ron said cheerfully, like this was completely normal. "Hogwarts has loads of them! That's Nearly Headless Nick. He's our house ghost."

"Nearly Headless?" Harry repeated.

"How can you be NEARLY headless?" Hermione asked with academic concern.

As if summoned by the question, the ghost in question drifted over. He was wearing a doublet with a ruff collar that looked like it had been fashionable approximately four hundred years ago, and had an expression that suggested he'd been waiting for someone to ask that EXACT question.

"Did someone say 'Nearly Headless'?" he asked with the enthusiasm of someone who LIVED for this moment. Or, well, DIED for it and continued to be enthusiastic about it post-death.

"Er, yes?" Harry said.

"New students! Excellent! First years! Even better! Allow me to introduce myself!" The ghost swept into a dramatic bow that somehow didn't result in his head falling off, though it looked close. "Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, at your service! Ghost of Gryffindor Tower! Resident of this castle for nearly five hundred years! And, unfortunately, Nearly Headless Nick."

"How CAN you be nearly headless?" Hermione asked, unable to help herself.

"Like THIS!" Nick said with dramatic flair, and grabbed his left ear and PULLED.

His head flopped to the side, held on by what looked like approximately one inch of ghostly skin and possibly sheer determination.

"HOLY—" Ron started.

"MERLIN!" Neville finished, looking faint.

"That's DISGUSTING!" Hermione said, but she was leaning forward with academic interest.

"That's AMAZING!" a girl down the table shouted.

"That's unfortunate," Harry said diplomatically, trying not to stare at the visible separation between head and body.

Nick straightened his head back into place with the air of someone who'd done this party trick a thousand times and would do it a thousand more.

"Forty-five chops with a blunt axe," he said with the satisfaction of someone sharing a war story. "Sir Properly Decapitated-Podmore got it done in ONE blow. Clean cut. HEAD COMPLETELY OFF. He got into the Headless Hunt. I did NOT. Because, as they so RUDELY point out at EVERY opportunity, I am NEARLY headless. Not FULLY headless. There's a DIFFERENCE, apparently."

"The Headless Hunt?" Harry asked, feeling like he'd just stepped into a Monty Python sketch.

"Exclusive club for ghosts who were properly beheaded," Nick explained with obvious bitterness. "They ride horses! They play Head Polo! They have PARTIES! And they won't let me JOIN because of this!" He gestured angrily at his neck. "One inch of skin! ONE INCH! And suddenly I'm not QUALIFIED!"

"That seems... discriminatory?" Hermione offered.

"THANK YOU!" Nick said emphatically. "That's what I'VE been saying for FOUR HUNDRED YEARS! But no! Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore—that's Sir Properly Decapitated—he says 'Standards are standards, Nicholas!' STANDARDS! I was EXECUTED! I DIED! I stayed behind as a GHOST! But apparently that's not ENOUGH!"

"That's rough, mate," Ron said sympathetically through a mouthful of beef.

"It IS rough! I've written LETTERS! I've filed COMPLAINTS! I've even practiced juggling! Do you know how hard it is to juggle when you're translucent and can't actually HOLD things?"

"I imagine very?" Neville said weakly.

"EXACTLY! Very hard! Nearly impossible! But I TRIED! And still—NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE HEADLESS HUNT!"

"Maybe you could start your own club?" Harry suggested. "The Nearly Headless Club? More inclusive? Less beheading-focused?"

Nick stared at him. Then slowly started to smile.

"You know what? That's not a bad idea. The Nearly Headless Club. For ghosts with STANDARDS who don't discriminate based on execution quality! I'll need bylaws. And members. Are there other nearly-headless ghosts?" He drifted off, muttering about membership requirements and possibly vendetta planning.

"Well," Hermione said, "that was disturbing."

"That was BRILLIANT!" Ron countered. "He just pulled his head off! Off! Just—FLOP! Amazing!"

"There's something wrong with you," Hermione informed him.

"There's something wrong with ALL of us!" Ron gestured around the Great Hall. "We're at a school! With ghosts! Eating food that appears from nowhere! Learning magic! This is ALL weird! I'm just embracing it!"

"He makes a fair point," Harry admitted.

A different ghost drifted past their section of the table—this one was a fat friar in monk's robes, looking considerably more cheerful than Nearly Headless Nick.

"Hello, hello!" the friar called out warmly. "New Gryffindors? Wonderful! Welcome to Hogwarts! I'm the Fat Friar—yes, that's actually my title, not a nickname—I'm the Hufflepuff ghost! Just wanted to say hello! If you're ever near the kitchens, pop in! The house elves make excellent snacks! Not that I can eat them! Being dead! But I remember eating! Fondly! Very fondly!"

"Thank you!" several first years chorused.

"Lovely manners! Gryffindors with manners! Rare but delightful!" The Friar drifted off toward the Hufflepuff table, spreading cheer and probably nostalgia for food.

"He seems nice," Neville said.

"All the Hufflepuff ghosts are nice," Ron explained. "It's their thing. Nice people, nice ghost."

A cold chill suddenly swept through their section of the table. The temperature dropped approximately fifteen degrees. Several students shivered.

"Oh no," Ron muttered.

"What?" Harry asked.

"That's the Bloody Baron. Slytherin ghost. He's—"

A ghost drifted into view that made Nearly Headless Nick look positively cheerful by comparison. Gaunt, staring eyes. Blank expression. Robes covered in silvery bloodstains that definitely told a story nobody wanted to hear. He moved with the energy of someone who'd died badly and was still processing it several centuries later.

The Slytherin table went quiet as he passed. Students nodded respectfully. Some looked genuinely nervous.

"Why's he called the Bloody Baron?" Harry whispered.

"Because he's covered in blood," Ron whispered back. "Nobody knows why. Nobody asks. He doesn't talk much. Mostly just... exists. Ominously. The Slytherins are terrified of him, which is saying something because they're usually not scared of anything."

The Baron drifted past without acknowledging anyone, radiating an aura of "tragic backstory that will never be discussed."

"Right," Harry said. "So we have: Nearly Headless Nick who wants to join a club, the Fat Friar who misses eating, and the Bloody Baron who's processing trauma. Any other ghosts?"

"There's the Grey Lady!" Hermione said, pointing toward the Ravenclaw table. "She's the Ravenclaw ghost. Very beautiful. Very quiet. I read about her—supposedly she's the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw herself!"

A tall, beautiful ghost with waist-length hair drifted near the Ravenclaw table. She moved with grace and dignity, occasionally answering questions from students but mostly keeping to herself.

"She looks sad," Neville observed.

"Most ghosts are," Hermione said quietly. "They chose to stay behind instead of... moving on. Usually because of unfinished business or fear of death. It's actually quite tragic when you think about it."

"Let's NOT think about it," Ron suggested, reaching for more chicken. "Let's think about FOOD. Happy thoughts. Living thoughts."

"Sensitive," Hermione said sarcastically.

"Practical!" Ron corrected.

A ghost suddenly rose UP through the middle of the Gryffindor table, scattering dishes and causing several first years to shriek.

"EVENING!" the ghost bellowed. He was small, wore a pointed hat, and had an expression that suggested he found chaos DELIGHTFUL. "First years! Welcome! I'm PEEVES! Not actually a ghost—I'm a poltergeist! There's a DIFFERENCE! Ghosts are boring! I'm FUN!"

"Oh no," several older students muttered.

"Peeves, GO AWAY!" Nearly Headless Nick materialized nearby, looking annoyed. "Leave the first years alone!"

"But I want to WELCOME them!" Peeves cackled. "With TRADITIONS! Like dropping WATER BALLOONS! Or rearranging their DORMITORIES! Or—"

"PEEVES!" McGonagall's voice cut through the hall like a knife. She was standing at the staff table, looking at Peeves with an expression that could melt steel. "OUT! NOW!"

"Spoilsport!" Peeves stuck his tongue out, grabbed a bowl of peas, and dumped them over a seventh year's head before zooming away, cackling maniacally.

"What," Harry said slowly, "was that?"

"That was Peeves," Percy Weasley said from further down the table. He was wearing a Prefect badge and an expression of DEEP disapproval. "Poltergeist. Been here for centuries. Causes chaos. Nobody can get rid of him. The Bloody Baron can control him sometimes, but mostly Peeves just... does whatever he wants."

"And the school just... allows this?" Hermione asked.

"The school has no CHOICE," Percy said grimly. "Peeves is tied to the castle itself. Removing him would be like removing a wall. Possible, technically, but extremely difficult and probably structurally unsound."

"So we just... live with chaos?" Neville asked nervously.

"You get used to it!" Fred called from down the table.

"It's character building!" George added.

"It's EXHAUSTING!" Percy corrected.

"Potato, po-TAH-to!" the twins said together.

Harry watched the organized chaos of the Great Hall—students eating, ghosts drifting, conversations happening, laughter echoing off the enchanted ceiling. It was overwhelming. It was chaotic. It was magical.

It was home.

"So," Ron said, finally slowing down his eating pace, "what do you think so far? Hogwarts? Magic school? Living with ghosts?"

"It's..." Harry paused, considering. "It's completely insane."

"Yeah!"

"Nothing makes sense."

"Accurate!"

"There's a poltergeist who throws food."

"Yep!"

"And ghosts with tragic backstories."

"Uh-huh!"

"And we're eating food that materialized from nowhere."

"Best food ever!"

"And tomorrow we start learning actual magic."

"FINALLY!" Ron grinned.

"I love it," Harry concluded.

"THAT'S THE SPIRIT!" Fred and George shouted from down the table.

Dessert appeared—replacing the main courses in an instant. Pies, cakes, puddings, ice cream, eclairs, and approximately forty other things that would make a dentist weep.

"SECOND WAVE!" Ron announced, immediately reaching for treacle tart.

"How are you still eating?" Hermione asked with genuine wonder.

"Talent!" Ron said proudly.

Nearly Headless Nick drifted back over, looking thoughtful.

"You know, Harry Potter—may I call you Harry?"

"Sure?"

"Harry, I've been thinking about your suggestion. The Nearly Headless Club. I think it has potential. We could meet monthly! Discuss execution techniques! Share our trauma in a supportive environment! It could be THERAPEUTIC!"

"That sounds... healthy?" Harry offered.

"I'm going to draft bylaws! Thank you for the inspiration! This could be the start of something meaningful!" Nick drifted off with renewed purpose.

"Did you just accidentally start ghost therapy?" Hermione asked.

"I think I did," Harry admitted.

"That's weirdly nice," Neville said.

"That's weirdly WEIRD," Ron corrected, mouth full of pudding.

The feast continued. Students ate, talked, laughed. Ghosts drifted. Magic hummed in the air like background music.

Harry looked around at his new friends—Ron enthusiastically devouring his third dessert, Hermione explaining something about ghost formation to Neville who was listening with genuine interest, Fred and George planning something that was definitely going to result in property damage.

*Even the system's getting sentimental,* Harry thought.

Dumbledore stood up again. The hall gradually quieted.

"Just a few announcements before bed!" he said cheerfully. "First years should note that the Forbidden Forest is—as the name suggests—forbidden to all students. Some of our older students would do well to remember this as well."

He looked directly at Fred and George, who looked absolutely innocent.

"The third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death."

Silence.

"He's joking, right?" Hermione whispered.

"Doesn't sound like a joke," Harry whispered back.

"Why would there be a deadly corridor in a SCHOOL?" Hermione hissed.

"Magic school!" Ron whispered. "Different rules!"

"That's not COMFORTING!"

"And now, before we all head to bed, let us sing the school song!" Dumbledore announced.

"Oh no," Percy muttered.

"OH YES!" Fred and George said together.
