If enemies were to invade, retracting the bridge would force them to either brave a circle of heavy fire to enter the inner courtyard, or leap over the pond over four meters wide.

The problem is, those who could leap over are not mortals, and attackers who are few in number can easily be overwhelmed by defenders—the platforms on both sides of the inner courtyard gate can house heavy firepower, including machine guns or crossbows, far beyond the imagination of the invaders.
