Chapter Eight – The Unwanted Third
Maelis' POV
The message came during breakfast.
I was sitting at the far end of the dining hall, picking at a piece of toast I had no appetite for, when a folded piece of paper slid across the table in front of me.
I looked up. Jace was already walking away, his hands in his pockets, whistling softly like he hadn't just delivered a secret note in plain view.
I unfolded the paper under the table.
Training tonight. Same place as before. Midnight. Don't be late. — S
My heart did something strange in my chest.
I looked around quickly, but Silas was nowhere in sight. Neither was Jace, who had already disappeared into the crowd of students.
Cassandra was sitting several tables away, surrounded by her usual circle of admirers. She laughed at something one of them said, tossing her golden hair over her shoulder, completely oblivious.
I folded the note and slipped it into my pocket.
This was my chance.
