Before long, the incense visitors in the temple were invited over one after another. Among them were several noblewomen along with their families, and a few scholars who claimed to come to offer incense but were actually here to enjoy the tranquility and pleasant scenery, composing poems.
Upon seeing Fu Hanwen and those scholars, the noblewomen immediately frowned and said, "Abbot, we have young maidens who haven't entered society yet. Aren't you worried about ruining their reputations by calling us over like this?"
The abbot, who had been anxious and hadn't considered much earlier, now saw the ladies' dissatisfaction, and complied with their wishes, saying, "Ladies, please calm down. I've already asked someone to bring a screen. I didn't expect everyone to come so quickly; that was my oversight. I hope you and the young ladies will not take offense."
Once the abbot finished speaking, some observant little novice monks quietly stepped back to fetch the screen.
